This study was performed to estimate the ozonation characteristics of phenol wastewater with increasing pH in the continuous packed column reactor (PCR) and the bubble column reactor (BCR). Among various influencing factors that affect phenol on decomposition through the ozonation, pH was chosen as reaction parameter. Upon increasing pH from 3 to 9, the phenol removal efficiency in PCR was improved approximately by 17% while in BCR approximately by 19.2%. The improvements in the phenol removal efficiency by increasing pH caused the enhancements in ozone utilization efficiency reaching almost 100% in PCR at pH 9. In conclusions, ozone has latent power for phenol wastewater treatment, and the performance of PCR was superior to that of BCR in the aspects of phenol removal and ozone utilization efficiency.

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can oxidize various organic pollutants. In this study, persulfate/Fe(II) system was utilized in phenol removal, and the effect of various organic and inorganic chelators on Fe(II)-medicated persulfate activation was investigated. The feasibility of persulfate/Fe(II)/chelator in cleanup of phenol-contaminated sediment was confirmed through toxicity assessment. In persulfate/Fe(II) conditions, the rate and extent of phenol removal increased in proportion to persulfate concentration. In chelator injection condition, the rate of phenol removal was inversely proportional to chelator concentration when it was injected above optimum ratio. Thiosulfate showed greater chelation tendency with persulfate than citrate and interfered with persulfate access to Fe(II), making the latter a more suitable chelator for enhancing persulfate activation. In contaminated clay sediment condition, 100% phenol removal was obtained within an hour without chelator, with the removal rate increased up to four times as compared to the rate with chelator addition. A clay sediment toxicity assessment at persulfate:Fe(II):phenol 20:10:1 ratio indicated 71.3% toxicity reduction with 100% phenol removal efficiency. Therefore, persulfate/Fe(II) system demonstrated its potential utility in toxicity reduction and cleanup of organic contaminants in sediments.
Phenol, often discharged from petroleum and fine chemical industries is potential carcinogen and was classified into priority pollutant by EPA in USA. It causes serious environmental and health problem if discharged to the environment such as soil or aquifer. The removal efficiency of phenol and COD using Fenton treatment(Hydrogen Peroxide and Ferrous Sulfate) was observed and biodegradability (BOD$_{5}$/COD$_{cr}$) of reaction products were also examined. When 50 mg/l of phenol was treated by Fenton's Reagent(50 mg/l of hydrogen peroxide and 900 mg/l of ferrous sulfate), the removal efficiency of phenol and COD was 100% and 80% respectively in 10 minutes, which suggested this method can be used as actual phenol removal process. The initial biodegradability of 500 mg/l phenol solution was 0.7 but decreased as hydrogen peroxide was increased.
Solid and liquid phase peroxidases were extracted from Chinese cabbage roots by using commercial juicer in order to use peroxidases from agricultural waste for industrial applications. Since peroxidases are distributed into 66% in liquid (juice) and 34% in solid phase (pulp), enzymes from both phases were applied to investigate the enzymatic removal of phenol from waste water. After contacting 150 ppm Phenol solution with liquid phase enzyme (1,800 unit/$\ell$) for 3 hours in a batch stirred reactor, 96% of phenol could be removed through polymerization and precipitation. Also, phenol could be removed from initial 120ppm to 5ppm by applying solid phase enzyme in an air lift reactor ($600 unit/\ell$). Almost equivalent efficiencies of phenol removal were observed between two systems, even though only one third of the enzymes in batch stirred reactor was applied in airlift reactor. The possible reason for this phenomenon is because peroxidases exist as immobilized forms in solid phase.
The main objectives of this research program were to study the ozonation characteristics of phenol wastewater in the continuous packed colamn reactor(PCR) and the bubble column reactor (BCR) using ozone and to provide the fundamentals of ozonizing the phenol wastewater. Among various influencing factors that affect on phenol decomposition through the oxidation by ozone, contacting method, and ozone flow rate were chosen as reaction parameters. The results were obtained from two different types of contacting methods where the countercurrent flow was more efficient than the cocurrent flow in both the phenol removal efficiency and the ozone utilization efficiency. Furthermore, PCR showed the phenol removal efficiency 1.6 to 3% higher than that of BCR in both contacting methods, as well as the ozone utilization efficiency, suggesting that the countercurrent flow is more efficient than the cocurrent flow. The phenol removal efficiency and the ozone utilization efficiency were reduced in both reactors as the influent ozone flow rate increased. Upon varing flow rate from 0.5l/min to 2.0 l/min by 0.5 l/min, the phenol removal efficiency was reduced approximately from 8.5% to 10.5% and the ozone utilization efficiency was reduced approximately from 6% to 8% in both reactors. The performance of PCR was superior to that of BCR in the aspects of phenol removal and ozone utilization efficiency.
Repeated phenol spill in the Nakdong River has been a big issue in Korea since 1991. In this study, treatment of phenol in each water treatment process and total water treatment system is evaluated. Phenol was highly volatile, easily oxidized by ozone, and readily absorbed onto GAC. When there was phenol of 0.3mg/L in water, by ozonation of 1mg/L or by GAC adsorption with EBCT of 10minutes or longer, it could be treated to lower than 0.005mg/L, the national drinking water standard of phenol. Even when a sufficient contact time(70minutes) was allowed, only 35 to 40% of phenol could be removed by powdered activated carbon(PAC). Based on the test results, it can be concluded that 1.0mg/L or less concentration of phenol can be treated at the plants adopting the combination process of ozone and GAC down to the safe level. In this study, removal characteristics for phenol were evaluated with the existing pilot plant and demo plant in different advanced water treatment processes(AWTPs). In the future, studies on changes in oxidation and adsorption characteristics caused by competitive matters such as DOC and removal characteristics by other various AWTPs including ozone/filter adsorber need to be performed.
This study was carried to investigate the biodegradability of phenol wastewater in the sluge blanket-packed bed reactor(SBPBR). The reactor consisted of two regions. The lower region was a sludge blanket of 0.5 m height and the upper region was a packed-bed. The phenol and COD concentration of the effluent, the gas production and the composition of gas were measured to determine the performance of the anaerobic wastewater treatment system as the phenol concentration of the influent was increased from 600 to 1800 mg/l. Stable biodegradation of phenol wastewater could be achieved with the anaerobic treatment system from 600 to 1200 mg/l of the influent phenol concentration. But the SBPBR system was getting more serious at 1800 mg/l of influent phenol concentration. At the steady state of the influent phenol concentration of 600-1200 mg/l, the treatment performance showed the phenol removal efficiency of 94.5~96.3%, the COD removal efficiency of 93.3~96% and the gas production of 4.94~9.64 l/day.
Aromatic hydrocarbons, such as phenol, have been detected frequently in wastewater, soil, and groundwater because of the extensive use of oil products. Bacterial strains (56 isolates) that degraded phenol were isolated from soil and industrial wastewater contaminated with hydrocarbons. GN13, which showed the best cell growth and phenol degradation, was selected for further analysis. The GN13 isolate was identified as Neisseria sp. based on the results of morphological, physiological, and biochemical taxonomic analyses and designated as Neisseria sp. GN13. The optimum temperature and pH for phenol removal of Neisseria sp. GN13 was $32^{\circ}C$ and 7.0, respectively. The highest cell growth occurred after cultivation for 30 hours in a jar fermentor using optimized medium containing 1,000 mg/l of phenol as the sole carbon source. Phenol was not detected after 27 hours of cultivation. Based on the analysis of catechol dioxygenase, it seemed that catechol was degraded through the meta- and ortho-cleavage pathway. Analysis of the biodegradation of phenol by Neisseria sp. GN13 in artificial wastewater containing phenol showed that the removal rate of phenol was 97% during incubation of 30 hours. The removal rate of total organic carbon (TOC) by Neisseria sp. GN13 and activated sludge was 83% and 78%, respectively. The COD removal rate by Neisseria sp. GN13 from petrochemical wastewater was about 1.3 times higher than that of a control containing only activated sludge.
The characteristics of anaerobic degradation of phenol were studied in a fluidized bed reactor using a granular activated carbon as media. Increasing the phenol loading rate with variation of feed concentration was considered as an experimental variable. In the present anaerobic fluidized-bed reactor, the removal efficiency of phenol and COD was maintained about 93-99% and 91-96%, respectively, up to 3.6 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot d$ of the phenol loading rate, but it was abruptly decreased under 5.0 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot d$. The volumetric production of biogas per removed phenol was decreased linearly between 0.80-1.27 m$^3$ gas/kg-phenol (0.35-0.56 m$^3$-gas/kg-COD), increasing the phenol loading rate, and the methane content of biogas was 55-60% as similar to that estimated theoretically up to 3.6 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot d$. But the production rate and methane content of biogas were suddenly decreased at the loading rate of 5.0 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot d$. Therefore, the anaerobically biodegradable phenol loading rate of the present reactor was 3.6 kg-phenol/$m^3\cdot$ d in order to accomplish over 90% of the removal efficiency.
The objectives of this study were to examine the biodegradation of phenol using the anaerobic fluidized bed reactor(AFBR). Mixed microorganisms were selected from the anaerobic digestion tank, and could be adapted to high concentration of phenol by increasing the phenol concentration 600-3600 mg/l step by step. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The average removal efficiency of phenol was 90%, decreased by increasing concentration of phenol, and then a shock range was 1200~2400 ppm. 2. The production rate of biogas in overall limits was proportional to the concentration of influent phenol. 3. At steady state, compositions of gases were $CH_4$ 55~60%, $C0_2$ 34~43%, respectively. These were similar to that of the theoretical estimates. 4. The production rates of biogas and methane per the molarity of phenol removed were linearly increased, 56.45 l gas/mol-phenol and 29.20 l $CH_4/mol$-phenol. Using this biogas, the recoverable energy was 269.1 kcal/mol phenol. It was 120.2 kcal/g-COD, transforming into the chemical oxygen demand. 5. The bulk of microorganisms existed in suspended section of fluidized bed with type of biofilm and its concentration was 340 mg/g-media. In conclusion, the anaerobic treatment of pure phenol was possible and its removal efficiency, introducing the AFBR, was successful. Also toxic organic compound such as phenol was biodegradable and was recoverable as resource of energy.
