  • This study proposes a new islanding detection method that uses the phase shift of feed-forward voltage and evaluates the performance of an existing method and the proposed method when the grid frequency changes within the allowable range under steady-state conditions. The investigated existing method, which is slip mode frequency shift (SMS), uses current phase shift to detect islanding. The SMS method supplies reactive current to the grid under this condition, but the proposed method does not generate additional reactive power because it does not depend on the current control loop. The performance in steady-state grid condition is evaluated through simulations and experiments.

  • In this paper, a rotor polarity detection algorithm is proposed to control the single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors(SP-PMSMs) for high speed sensorless operation. Generally, the sensorless control of a SP-PMSM is switched to the sensorless operation in a specific speed region after the open loop startup. As a result, it is necessary to detect the rotor polarity to maintain a constant rotational direction of the SP-PMSM at the starting process. There, this paper presents a novel rotor polarity detection method using a high frequency voltage signal and offset current which is generated by current regulator. The proposed algorithm verified the effectiveness and usefulness of the rotor polarity detection through several experiments.

  • Inverters are considered the basic building blocks of industrial electrical drive systems that are widely used for various applications; however, the failure of electronic switches mainly affects the constancy of these inverters. For safe and reliable operation of an electrical drive system, faults in power electronic switches must be detected by an efficient system that is capable of identifying the type of faults. In this paper, an open switch fault identification technique for a three-phase inverter is presented. Single, double, and triple switching faults can be diagnosed using this method. The detection mechanism is based on stator current analysis. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) using Daubechies is performed on the Clarke transformed (-) stator current and features are extracted from the wavelets. An artificial neural network is then used for the detection and identification of faults. To prove the feasibility of this method, a Simulink model of the DWT-based feature extraction scheme using a neural network for the proposed fault detection system in a three-phase inverter with an induction motor is briefly discussed with simulation results. The simulation results show that the designed system can detect faults quite efficiently, with the ability to differentiate between single and multiple switching faults.

  • This paper presents a new control method of single-phase active power filter (APF) for the compensation of harmonic current components in nonlinear loads. To facilitate the possibility of complex calculation for harmonic current detection of the single phase, a single-phase system that has two phases was constructed by including an imaginary second-phase giving time delay to the load current. The imaginary phase, which lagged the load current T/4 (Here T is the fundamental cycle) is used in the conventional method. But in this proposed method, the new signal as the second phase is delayed by the filter. Because this control method is applied to a single-phase system, an instantaneous calculation was developed by using the rotating reference frames synchronized to source-frequency rather than by applying instantaneous reactive power theory that uses the conventional fixed reference frames. The control scheme of single-phase APF for the current source with R-L loads is applied to a laboratory prototype to verify the proposed control method.

  • This paper presents a circuit to generate the current reference signal for single-phase harmonic elemination systems. Some of conventional methods for the current reference signal generation based on neural network algorithms. It requires complex circuitry to implement. the simplest method is to use analog filters. but it is difficult to obtain good current reference signals. So, we propose the harmonic detection circuit using GIC(Generalized Impedance Converter) for the purpose of low cost ,simple circuitry and high performance, Simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed circuit has better harmonic detection performance than conventional circuit.

  • A new eddy current testing probe was developed to separate the eddy current signal distortion caused by permeability variation clusters and ordinary defects created in steam generator tubes. Signal processing circuits were inserted into the probe to increase the signal-to-noise ratio and allow digital signal transmission. The new probe could measure and separate the magnetic phases created in the steam generator tubes in the operating environment of a nuclear power plant. Furthermore, the new eddy current testing probe can measure the defects in steam generator tubes as rapidly as a bobbin probe with enhanced testing speed and reliability of defect detection.

  • A novel islanding detection method is proposed in this paper. It is based on a frequency drooping PLL, which was presented in a previous work. The cause of errors in the non-detection zone (NDZ) of conventional frequency disturbance islanding detection methods (IDM) is analyzed. A frequency drooping phase-locked-loop (FD-PLL) is introduced into a single-phase grid-connected inverter (SPGCI), which can guarantee that grid current is in phase with the grid voltage. A novel FD-PLL IDM is proposed by improving this PLL. In order to verify the performance of the proposed FD-PLL IDM, a full performance comparison between the proposed IDM and typical existing active frequency drift IDMs is carried out, which includes both dynamic performance and steady performance. With the same NDZ, the total harmonic distortion of the grid-current in the dynamic process and steady state is analyzed. The proposed FD-PLL IDM, regardless of the dynamic or steady process, has the best power quality. Experimental and simulation results verify that the proposed FD-PLL IDM has excellent performance.

  • Leakage impulse current of the contaminated insulators by using experiment data were studied. The impulse current in phase-time relationship was analyzed on line post insulators. Also, frequency components and crest factor of the leakage current were investigated to provide a scheme for an early detection of insulator incipient failure. The study shows that the phase-time characteristic is non-stationary and random and, non-harmonic component and crest factor can be promising parameters for detecting insulator leakage currents.

  • In this paper, for compensating dynamic voltage sag and harmonic current, 3-phase hybrid series active power filter based on the space vector detection is proposed. The Space vector algorithm for detecting the voltage sag and the harmonic current in compared with conventional theory is a simple method for calculating the compensating reference without any coordinated transformation. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified by the PSIM simulation in the steady state and the transient state, which the proposed system is able to simultaneously compensate harmonics and source voltage unbalance / sag.

  • The turn-to-turn short is one major fault of the motor faults of BLDC motors and can appear frequently. When the fault happens, the motor can be operated without breakdown, but it is necessary to maintain the motor for continuous working. In past research, several methods have been applied to detect winding faults. The representative approaches have been focusing on current signals, which can give important information to extract features and to detect faults. In this study, current sensors were installed to measure signals for fault detection of BLDC motors. In this study, the Park's vector method was used to extract the features and to isolate the faults from the current measured by sensors. Because this method can consider the three-phase current values, it is useful to detect features from one-phase and three-phase faults. After extracting two-dimensional features, the final feature was generated by using the two-dimensional values using the distance equation. The values were used in fuzzy similarity to isolate the faults. Fuzzy similarity is an available tool to diagnose the fault without model generation and the fault was converted to the percentage value that can be considered as possibility of the fault.
