  • Computer Automated Radioactive Particle Tracking (CARPT) technique has been successfully utilized to measure the velocity profiles and mixing parameters in different multiphase flow systems where a single radioactive tracer is used to track the tagged phase. However, many industrial processes use a wide range of particles with different physical properties where solid particles could vary in size, shape and density. For application in such systems, the capability of current single tracer CARPT can be advanced to track more than one particle simultaneously. Tracking multiple particles will thus enable to track the motion of particles of different size shape and density, determine segregation of particles and probing particle interactions. In this work, a newly developed Multiple Radioactive Particle Tracking technique (M-RPT) used to track two different radioactive tracers is demonstrated. The M-RPT electronics was developed that can differentiate between gamma counts obtained from the different radioactive tracers on the basis of their gamma energy peak. The M-RPT technique was validated by tracking two stationary and moving particles (Sc-46 and Co-60) simultaneously. Finally, M-RPT was successfully implemented to track two phases, solid and liquid, simultaneously in three phase slurry bubble column reactors.

  • Microstructural analysis of a (${\alpha}+{\beta}$) Ti alloy was investigated to consider phase transformation in each step of the thermo-mechanical process using by SEM and TEM EDS. The TAF (Ti-6Al-4Fe) alloy was thermo-mechanically treated with solid solution at $880^{\circ}C$, rolling at $880^{\circ}C$ and annealing at $800^{\circ}C$. In the STQ state, the TAF microstructure was composed of a normal hcp ${\alpha}$ and metastable ${\beta}$ phase. In a rolled state, it was composed of fine B2 precipitates in an ${\alpha}$ phase, which had high Fe segregation and a coherent relationship with the ${\beta}$ matrix. Finally, in the annealing state, the fine B2 precipitates had disappeared in the ${\alpha}$ phase and had gone to the boundary of the ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phase. On the other hand, in a lower rolling temperature of $704^{\circ}C$, the B2 precipitates were more coarse in both the ${\alpha}$ and the boundary of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phase. We concluded that microstructural change affects the mechanical properties of formability including rolling defects and cracks.

  • [ $M\"{o}ssbauer$ ] spectra of $Ti_{1-x-y}Co_xFe_yO_2(0.01{\leq}x,\;y{\leq}0.05)$ prepared with $^{57}Fe$ enriched iron have been taken at various temperatures ranging from 80 to 300K. The Mossbauer spectrum of $Ti0.94Co_{0.03}Fe_{0.03}O_2$ consists of a ferromagnetic (six-Lorentzian), a paramagnetic phase (doublet) and armorphous phase over all temperature ranges. Isomer shifts indicate $Fe^{3+}$ for the ferromagnetic phase and the paramagneic phase of $Ti_{1-x-y}Co_xFe_yO_2$ samples. It is noted that the magnetic hyperfine field of ferromagnetic phase had the value about 1.5 times as large as that of u-fe. The XRB data for $Ti_{1-x-y}Co_xFe_yO_2$ showed mainly rutile phase with tetragonal structures without any segregation of Co and Fe into particulates within the instrumental resolution limit. The magnetic moment per (Co+Fe) atom in $Ti0.94Co_{0.03}Fe_{0.03}O_2$, under the applied field of 1T was estimated to be about $0.332{\mu}_B$ which is ten times as large as that of $Ti0.97Co_{0.03}Fe_{0.03}O_2,\;0.024{\mu}_B$ per Co atom, suggesting a high spin configuration of Co and fe ions.

  • After casting button-type small ingots of ternary Fe-Mn-S alloys which had three different Mn/S ratios (1, 5 and 70) in a vacuum arc furnace, the effect of the ratio on the sulfide formation was investigated. In case of the Mn/S ratio of 1, if alloy composition was located in an iron-rich corner on a Fe-Mn-S ternary phase diagram, only duplex MnS-FeS sulfide films were observed in the grain boundary. If the alloy composition was located in the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, primary globular dendritic sulfides and dendritic sulfide slags were generated within the grain and tubular monotectic sulfides were also detected in the grain boundary. When the Mn/S ratio was 5, if the alloy composition was in the iron-rich corner, only bead-like sulfides were generated. On the other hand, if the composition was in the miscibility gap area, globular dendritic sulfides and dendritic sulfide slags were generated in the form of primary sulfide inclusions and rod-like eutectic sulfides were observed in the grain boundary. Especially, if the contents of Mn and S increased more in the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, primary globular sulfides containing iron intrusions were observed. In case of Mn/S ratio of 70, if the contents of Mn and S was decreased in the Fe corner of the phase diagram, only bead-like sulfides were observed in the grain boundary. Despite the composition was outside the miscibility gap area of the phase diagram, if the contents of Mn and S increased, clusters of fine sulfide particles as well as fine spherical primary monophase sulfides were observed in the grain boundary.

  • The rutile polycrystal $Ti_{0.99}\;^{57}Fe_{0.01}O_2$ prepared with $^{57}Fe$ enriched iron have been studied by $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and VSM. The $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectrum of $Ti_{0.99}\;^{57}Fe_{0.01}O_2$ consists of a ferromagnetic and a paramagnetic phase over all temperature ranging from 4 to 300 K. Isomer shifts indicate $Fe^{2+}$ for the ferromagnetic phase, but $Fe^{3+}$ for the paramagneic phase of $Ti_{0.99}\;^{57}Fe_{0.01}O_2$ sample. It is noted that the magnetic hyperfine field of ferromagnetic phase had the value about 1.48 times as large as that of $\alpha$-Fe. The XRD data for $Ti_{0.99}\;^{57}Fe_{0.01}O_2$ showed a pure rutile phase with tetragonal structures without any segregation of Fe into particulates within the instrumental resolution limit The magnetic hysteresis (M-H) curve at room temperature showed an obvious ferromagnetic behavior and the magnetic moment per Fe atom under the applied field of 1 T was estimated to be about $0.71{\mu}_B$, suggesting a low spin configuration of Fe ions.

  • In general, the electromagnetic transient phenomenon always exists in induction motor(IM) with the torque change. The control performance of IM is very worse than that of D.C motor owing to this transient phenomenon. So many studies about the elimination methods of the transient phenomenon have been making progress. Interesting methods of them are the Field acceleration method(FAM) and the method of impulse addition on the input voltage at the time point of torque change. In this paper, first, the circuit equation of IM is derived from the phase segregation method. The torque equation consisted of the stator and rotor currents is derived from the solving of the circuit equation. As we well known, the transient terms exist in this the torque equation. The method of impulse addition on the input voltage at the instance of torque change is confirmed theoretically for the elimination of the transient phenomenon. With the base on it, the author proposed a real time algorithm to eliminate the transient terms. The control system is consisted of the PI controller with the feedforward of torque change. The author could confirm that the quick stepwise responses of torque and speed can be obtained from response simulations.

  • A part of the bronze bell from Goryeo (918-1392) in the collection of Buyeo National Museum was missing, and it was noted to retain corrosion products and burial accretions. Chemical analysis showed that the chemical composition of the bronze bell is Cu (74.18%), Sn (9.58%), Pb (15.77%), and very small amounts of As, Fe, Sb, Bi, and Ag. It was noted that the microstructure of the bronze bell was mainly made up of α phase and α+δ eutectoid phase, and gray (S) and black (Pb segregation) prevailed. Conservation treatment has been done for the preservation of this bronze bell.

  • The amorphous tungsten nitrides, WNx, film could be fabricated by reactive sputtering process. The nitrogen concentration for the amorphization ranges from 10 at% to 40at%. The amorphous $W_{67}N_{33}$ film was crystallized into low resistivity $\alpha$-tungsten phase with equiaxed grains and excess nitrogen after the rapid thermal annealing for 1min at 1273K, which was similar to the resistivity of the sputtered pure tungsten film. The excess nitrogen was depleted from $\alpha$-tungsten crystals and then segregated at $\alpha$-tungsten/poly-Si interface. The segregated nitrogen has favored the formation of the homogeneous diffusion barrier layer comprised of silicon nitride, $Si_3N_4$, nano-crystals, which undertaken the inhibition of the high resistivity tungsten silicide reaction.

  • $SrSO_4$ were systematically added on Bi2212 from 0 to 10wt% to study the effect of Bi2212 superconductor tube characteristics. After mixing, the melted solution of Bi2212 and $SrSO_4$ was initially poured into the cylinder type of steel mold preheated at $550^{\circ}C$ for 30min and rotated at 1000rpm. Following that, tube was annealed at $840^{\circ}C$ for 72hrs. The tube dimension was 60 in diameter, 60mm in length and 2mm in thickness. XRD data suggests that there was no typical segregation phase related with $SrSO_4$. Well textured grain with typical 2212 phase was observed and average size was $20{\mu}m$. The measured critical current and critical current density of Bi2212 tube added by 5% $SrSO_4$ at 77K were 495A and $202A/cm^2$ respectively.

  • The influence of SiO$_2$on the microstructure and electrical properties of zinc oxide varistor was investigated. Zn$_2$SiO$_4$third phase in the sintered body was found at grain boundaries, multiple grain junctions, and occasionally within ZnO grains. This phase acted as a grain growth inhibitor, which retard the grain growth of the ZnO matrix by impeding migration on the grain boundaries. As SiO$_2$ addition increases, average grain size decreased from 40.6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 26.9${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ due to the pinning effect by Zn$_2$SiO$_4$ and drag effect by Si segregation at grain boundaries, the breakdown voltage consequently increased. When SiO$_2$ addition is increased, interface state density decreased, however, the barrier height increased by decrease of donor concentration, as a result, the nonlinear exponent increased and leakage current decreased. While, as SiO$_2$ addition increase, it was found that the apparent dielectric loss factor shows a tendency of decrease. Wholly, electrical properties of zinc oxide varistor can be said to be improved by SiO$_2$addition.
