  • Communication education research has focused on the effects of instructor characteristics on learning. It is necessary to consider student characteristics as well to develop an effective teaching strategy. The current study tries to classify students into multiple distinct groups depending on their personality traits and communication characteristics and investigates differences in effects of teacher characteristics between those groups. A survey on unversity students was conducted to collect data. A cluster analysis was carried out to identify distint sub-groups of respondents by their personality traits and communication characteristics. The analysis yielded two distinct groups. The two groups were named stable-reticent group', and 'neurotic-talkative group' respectivley. Series of multiple regression were carried out in order to investigate differences in the effects of instructor characteristics. The analyses found different patterns of effects between the two sub-groups. The findings suggest that it is necessary to adopt different communication styles and teaching strategies depending on student types.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the moderating effect of counseling class experience on the relationship between an undergraduate's personality characteristics, emotional intelligence, and empathic ability. As a result of verification, having course experience has a moderating effect on empathic abilities, reversing agreeableness from positive into negative. It also has a moderating effect on the influence of empathic concern, making that of an extravert positively significant. The experience of taking a course did not show a moderating effect on emotional intelligence that can be improved by learning. This demonstrates that education in counseling as carried out in universities is inappropriate, and course experience enhances empathic concern only when the student tends to be an extrovert. This implies that the current counseling system is a curriculum suitable for extroverted people. Also, when students have a friendly, amicable tendency, the experience of taking a course lowered empathic ability. This means that an amicable tendency is not a variable influencing educational experience, and that the present curriculum needs to be diversified. Although it is hard to provide a curriculum customized for each individual's characteristics, this study holds significance in emphasizing diversity in the curriculum to allow students to choose a small-group class or the lecture method based on personality or individual tendency.

  • Over the past decades there has been a growing body of researches that examines the psychological traits related to safety outcomes. After briefly reviewing the relationships between psychological dispositions and safety outcomes, we empirically examine the relationships with 2 samples of 1,102 participants. Fifteen psychological dispositions (big 5 personality, locus of control, cognitive failure, affection from job and relations, 4 achievement goal orientations, self-efficacy, fatigue, and depression) and four psychological outcomes (safe behavior, unsafe behavior, accidents, and injuries) are examined. After covariance structure modeling variances of safety outcomes are well explained by simple 4 dispositions of consciousness, mastery-approach goal orientation, self-efficacy, and depression. We name them 'core safety disposition', and name four psychological outcomes 'safety consciousness', and the relationships between those latent variables are stronger than between measurement variables. We propose core safety disposition as a cause of safety consciousness, and discuss implications for research and practices.

  • Purpose: This study identified the relationship between dietary habits and health-related behaviors depending on the Big Five personality factors (extraversion, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism). Methods: The NEO-II test was administered to 337 male and female college students in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province, and their dietary habits and health-related behaviors were surveyed. Results: The male participants showed higher scores for extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness compared to that of their female counterparts, while the female participants showed higher scores for neuroticism. As for the results of multivariate logistic regression analysis, in the case of men, higher scores for extraversion were related to a lower intake of instant/fast foods and a higher intake of vegetables; higher agreeableness scores were related to a lower intake of fruit; and higher neuroticism scores were related to a heavy intake of high-cholesterol foods. It was found that higher openness scores were associated with a higher intake of burnt fish/meat and a lower intake of animal fat, while higher agreeableness scores were related to a lower intake of burnt fish/meat in women. Also, those subjects with higher openness and agreeableness scores were found to better consider the nutritional balance when having a meal. In the case of the male participants, higher openness scores were related to increased physical activity, while higher neuroticism scores were related to increased smoking and a lack of sleep. As for the women, those with higher extraversion scores smoked more, while those who recorded higher agreeableness scores were involved in more physical activities. Conclusion: Differences were observed in dietary habits and health-related behaviors between men and women depending on personality factors, and the analysis results of some dietary habits according to personality factors were inconsistent with those of the overseas studies. Therefore, to provide customized nutritional counseling when considering each individual's personality factors, more research results from domestic samples should be collected and accumulated.

  • To extend the potential benefits of error, the current study examined factors that affect students' error perception in the classroom. An experimental design was used to measure relations of classroom goal structure, feedback, and social relationships on students' perception of error. A total of 316 fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade elementary students participated as part of their regular class curriculum. Self-reported questionnaires were administered to measure students' perception of errors and relationships with teacher and peers, and then students were manipulated by classroom goal structure and feedback. Multiple regression analysis results suggested that students' perception of learning from error was affected mostly by relationships with peers, followed by relationships with teacher and the type of feedback. Students' perception of risk taking for error was also affected by relationships with peers and teacher, followed by the classroom goal structure. However, classroom goal structure and feedback did not affect their perception of thinking about error to improve their learning as well as error strain. These results imply how the classroom climate should be structured to improve perception of errors to improve student's learning.
