  • This paper suggests the slot wedge shape for reducing the cogging torque of a direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator for a bike. To consider easy coil winding, we applied a structure of open slot for the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Because the cogging torque of PWSG with the open slot is very large, we are designed the appropriate specifications of the PMSG by selected the appropriate material of slot wedge and various slot wedge shapes. The prototype model is selected by design theory for reducing cogging torque and maximizing efficiency of PMSG. And the detailed structure design of the model was designed by the loading distribution method. The PMSG models were analyzed by finite element method. Finally, we have suggested appropriate material of slot wedges and its shape which has benefit to further reducing cogging torque and preventing decreasing of the generating power.

  • Maximum torque per ampere vector controller is widely used to control permanent magnet synchronous motors. For the controller to work properly, it is important to know the exact values of motor parameters such as a stator resistance, inductances, and the flux linkage of the permanent magnet. In this paper, an adaptive control algorithm is proposed to estimate these parameters using MRAS(Model Reference Adaptive System). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the permanent magnet overhang effect for permanent magnetic actuator. Generally, The overhang is often used to increase the force density in permanent magnet machineries. The overhang is especially profitable to reduce the volume after increasing the force density per volume when using the overhang effect of the permanent magnet. Therefore, 3D Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network Method (3D EMCNM) has been used in this paper. According to the plunger position, flux distribution per the overhang length, and the holding force are quantitatively compared. Furthermore, an appropriate length of the overhang has been proposed. To confirm the accuracy of the analysis method, the results of 3D EMCNM and FEM(2D, 3D) are compared for the basic model.

  • This paper presents a tubular reciprocating translational motion permanent magnet synchronous motor for percussive drilling applications for offshore oil & gas industry. The motor model and rock model are built up by doing force analysis of the motor and analyzing the physical procesof impact. The optimization of input voltage waveforms to maximize the rate of penetration is done by simulations. The simulation results show that the motor can be utilized in percussive drilling applications and achieve a very large impact force. Simulation results for optimization also show that second harmonic input voltage produces a higher rate of penetration than the sine wave and fourth harmonic input voltages.

  • This paper describes the testing and experimental characterization of a linear permanent magnet actuator, which is designed and developed for active vehicle suspension, under both static and dynamic conditions. Since the active suspension unit operates over a wide force-velocity range with varying duty ratios, it is essential to establish an effective thermal model which can be used for assessing temperature rise of the actuator under various operating conditions. The temperature rise of the actuator is measured and the results are compared with the prediction by the derived transient thermal model. It is shown that the measured actuator parameters and characteristics are closed to their predicted values. The linear actuator is controlled by a dSPACE system via a three phase inverter and its velocity tracking performance is presented.

  • This paper shows the characteristic analysis of single-phase LSPM(Line Start Permanent Magnet) synchronous motor considering overhang structure. To obtain the dynamic and steady performance of the motor, the D-Q equivalent circuit is used and the circuit parameters are extracted by 3D FEM. The performance of the model with overhang is compared with conventional model without overhang on the condition that both models have the same volume of the permanent magnet.

  • This paper presents an optimization of permanent magnet (PM) in a brushless dc (BLDC) motor using the response surface methodology (RSM). Size and angle of the PM are optimized to minimize the cogging torque, while reducing the magnitude of harmonic at a dominant frequency and maintaining the operating torque. A fitted RS model is constructed by verifying the high reliability of the total variation and the variation of estimated error. The optimized design is validated by carrying out the reanalysis and comparing to the initial model using the nonlinear transient finite element analysis.

  • The computation time of FEA(finite element analysis) for one model may range from a few seconds up to several hours according to the complexity of the simulated model. If these FEA is used to calculate the objective and the constraint functions during the optimal solution search, it causes very excessive execution time. To resolve this problem, the distributed computing technique using internet web service is proposed in this paper. And the dynamic load balancing mechanisms are established to advance the performance of distributed computing. To verify its validity, this method is applied to a traditional mathematical optimization problem. And the proposed FEA-based optimization using internet distributed computing is applied to the optimal design of the permanent magnet dc motor(PMDCM) for automotive application.

  • This paper proposes a parametric model for inter-turn fault detection in a fault-tolerant permanent-magnet (FTPM) machine, which can predict the effect of the short-circuit fault to various physical quantity of the machine. For different faulty operations, a new effective stator inter-turn fault detection method is proposed. Finally, simulations of vector-controlled FTPM machine drives are given to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, showing that even single-coil short-circuit fault could be exactly detected.

  • In this paper, we Present two-dimensional (2-D) analytical model for predicting the magnetic field characteristic of slotless permanent magnet bushless motors. Results from the model are compared to those deduced from 2-D finite element analyses(FEA). It is shown that the radial magnetization and the parallel magnetization of permanent magnet can have flux density on coil, airgap and permanent magnet's surface.
