  • Natural convection of a fluid with intermediate Prand시 number of Pr=0.2 in a horizontal annulus is considered, and the bifurcation phenomena and chaotic flows are numerically investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. The steady downward flow with two counter-rotating eddies bifurcates to a simple periodic flow with a fundamental frequency. And afterwards, second Hopf bifurcation occurs, and a quasi-periodic flow with two incommensurable frequencies appears. However, a new time-periodic flow is established after experiencing quasi-periodic states. As Rayleigh number is increased further, the chaotic flow regime is reached after a sequence of successive Hopf bifurcation to quasi-periodic and chaotic flow regimes. A scenario similar to the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario of the onset of chaos is observed.

  • In this paper, we study some dynamical properties of a weakly almost periodic flow. In particular we get, in a weakly almost periodic flow (X,T), the groups I and A(I) of all automorphisms of I are isomorphic, where E(X) is the enveloping semigroup of (X,T) and I is the minimal right ideal in E(X).

  • This study investigates the bifurcation sequence to chaos in a horizontal annulus with a constant heat flux wall. After the first Hopf bifurcation from a steady to a simple time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, quasi-periodic flows with two or three incommensurable frequencies appear. A reverse transition from a quasi-periodic flow to a simple periodic flow is observed with increase of Rayleigh number. And finally, chaotic convection is established after appearance of three incommensurable frequencies at a high Rayleigh number. Simple periodic flows exist between quasi periodic flows. The transition route to chaos of the present simulations follows the Ruelle-Takens route.

  • In this paper, a segregated finite element program for the analysis of an axisymmetric steady flow has been developed in order to investigate the flow inside an annular pipe with a periodic obstacle. For the verification of the developed code, a developing pipe flow has been solved and the solution is in a good agreement with the existing results. For the analysis of the flow inside an annular pipe with a periodic obstacle, three types of periodic obstacle are considered. From the present numerical analysis, various physical variables including flow pattern, pressure distribution and residence time are investigated as a preliminary study to the heat transfer analysis of an annular pipe flow with a periodic obstacle.

  • In the present experimental study, the flow behavior in a semi-closed two-phase natural circulation loop was examined. Water was used as the working fluid. Heat flux, heater-inlet subcooling, and flow restrictions at the heater-inlet and at the expansion-tank-line were taken as the controlling parameters Six circulation modes were identified by changing heat flux and inlet subcooling conditions ; single-phase continuous circulation, periodic circulation (A), two-phase continuous circulation, and periodic circulations (B), (C), and (D). Among these, the single-phase and two-phase continuous-circulation modes exhibit no significant oscillations and are considered to be stable. Periodic circulation (A) is characterized by the large amplitude two-phase f10w oscillations with the temporal single-phase circulation between them, while periodic circulation (B) featured by the flow oscillations with continuous boiling inside the heater section. Periodic circulation (C) appears to be the manometric oscillation with continuous boiling. Periodic circulation (D) has the longer period than periodic circulation (B) and a substantial amount of liquid flow back and forth through the expansion-tank-line periodically ; this mode is considered the pressure drop oscillation. Parametric study shows that the increases of the inlet- and expansion-tank-line- restrictions and the decrease of inlet subcooling broaden the range of the stable two-phase(continuous circulation) mode.

  • The present study is carried out in order to investigate the effect of the periodic acceleration in the stenosed and bifurcated blood vessels. The blood flow and wall shear stress are changed under body movement or acceleration variation. Numerical studies are performed for various periodic acceleration phase angles, bifurcation angles and section area ratios of inlet and outlet. It is found that blood flow and wall shear stress are changed about ${\pm}20%$ and ${\pm}24%$ as acceleration phase angle variation with the same periodic frequency. also wall shear stress and blood flow rate are decreased as bifurcation angle increased.

  • To research on change of blade row flow field with tip clearance caused by upstream periodic wake, an apparatus that generate periodic wake through traversing cylinders were installed. Then how movement of upstream wake affect cascade flow and tip leakage flow were measured. Cylinder was installed in front of 50% of chord length, and traversing velocity was calculated at approximately 11.7m/s regarding inlet velocity and chord length. To measure three-dimensional velocity of flow inside blade row, single slanted hot-wire was used. From the results, when the periodic wake is inserted, the flow inside of cascade is dominantly affected by vortex that is generated from cylinder. This periodic wake affects passage vortex and tip leakage vortex.

  • Characteristics of flow and heat transfer have been studied numerically in a square duct with a periodic pressure gradient. The flow in a duct was assumed to be fully developed and constant heat flux was imposed at the surfaces of a square duct. The distributions of axial velocity and time-space averaged temperature are investigated with angular velocity and amplitude ratio at a given Reynolds number 1000. When the periodic pressure gradient was imposed axially in a duct, the reverse flow may be occurred near the duct wall. The magnitude of this reverse flow increases as the amplitude ratio increases or as the angular frequency decreases. In the ranges of the amplitude ratio and the angular velocity in present investigation, the ratio of the periodic time space averaged temperature to the nonperiodic space averaged temperature has been found to be greater than one. This means that the cooling effect at the duct walls deteriorates with a periodic situation compared with nonperiodic one.

  • Transition to chaotic convection is investigated for natural convection of a fluid with Pr=0.1 in a wide-gap horizontal annuls. The unsteady two-dimensional stream-function-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As the Rayleigh number is increased, the steady 'downward flow' bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, and afterwards a period-doubling bifurcation occurs. As the Rayleigh number is increased further, the chaotic flow regime is reached after a sequence of successive Hopf bifurcation to quasi-periodic and chaotic flow regimes. The route to chaos shows the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario. The flow of chaotic regime displays complex coalescence and separation of eddies in the side and lower region of the annulus.

  • Effect of computational domain size in simulating of periodic obstacle flow has been investigated for the flow past tube banks. Reynolds number, defined by freestream velocity (U) and cylinder diameter (d), was fixed as 200, and center-to-center distance (P) as 1.5d. In-line square array was considered. Drag coefficient, lift coefficient and Strouhal number were calculated depending on domain size. Circular cylinders were implemented on a Cartesian grid system by using an immersed boundary method. Boundary condition is periodic in both streamwise and lateral directions. Previous studies in literature often use a square domain with a side length of P, which contains only one cylinder. However, this study reveals that size is improper. Especially, RMS values of flow-induced forces are most sensitive to the domain size.
