In a pear fruit 'Chuhwangbae' was investigated the effect of the calcium-coated double paper bag on the physical properties of the paper bag, micro meteorological phenomena, and calcium contents in quality of fruit. The calcium-coated paper bag, compared with official paper bags, did not give any effect on light transmission ratio and tensile strength. The change of the inside relative humidity of the paper bag was a little compared with conventional paper bags, but there was no difference in temperature. The contents of the accumulated calcium of the pericarp was remarkably greater than conventional paper bags during the period of 65 days to 160 days after the full bloom, but the flesh remarkably increased at 160 days. The calcium content per concentration of calcium coating greatly increased in 12% of yellow double paper bags and 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp, and in 3% of yellow double paper bags and 6, 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp. As a result of treatment of a radioactive isotope, the amount of accumulated calcium in the pericarp continued until 60 hours after treatment, but there was no difference in the calcium amount between the flesh and no-treatment pericarp. As to the hardness of fruits at the time of harvest, there was no difference in the concentration in case of a yellow double bags. But newspaper double paper bags 6, 12% was significantly difference. Soluble solid remarkably increased in yellow double paper bags 6, 9% and yellow double paper bags 3, 6, 9%. Also, it did not effect on changes of the pericarp, fruit weight and the color of the pericarp.
Background : This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of extract from different parts of water chestnut (Trapa japonica Flerow). Methods and Results : The total polyphenol content of pericarp and seed extract was 438.31 mg/g and 25.32 mg/g respectively. DPPH radical scavenging assay showed that the half maximal inhibitory concentration ($IC_{50}$ values) of pericarp and seed extract were $5.28{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and $355.51{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ respectively. In addition, the pericarp extract showed strong reducing power. In the MTT assay, the pericarp extract significantly inhibited the viability of A549, AGS, HeLa, PC-3, HCT116, HT29 and SW620 cell lines compared with the seed extract. Conclusions : These results suggest that T. japonica Flerow extracts have significant antioxidant and antiproliferative activity.
The structural changes in the pericarp of Panax ginseng fruit cells are studied during maturation periods. The pericarp can be divided into exocarp, mesocarp and endocarp. The exocarp consists of one layer of epidermal cells which is covered by a thin cuticle and hypodermal cells. A central vacuole and peripheral cytoplasm are observed in the exocarp and mesocarp. Also, irregular wall arrangement are observed during the differentiation. The endocarp is clearly marked off from the others by secondaw wall thickening and lignification. Secretory materials produced by the Golgi complex and rough endoplasmic reticulum vesicles appear to accumulated in the cell wall. These secretory materials are considered major components of the seed coat during the differentiation.

Abeliophyllum distichum is a monotypic taxon of Oleaceae and endemic to Korea. A comprehensive study on embryogeny and fruit and seed coat ontogeny in Abeliophyllum was carried out via microtome and light microscopy. The fertilization occurs during mid– to late April and embryo matures by early July. The embryo development follows the general fashion from globular embryo – transition embryo – heart shaped embryo – torpedo embryo – walking-stick embryo to mature embryo. The pericarp clearly differentiates into three histological zones: exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp. The young seed comprises 10-12 cells thick seed coat and the mature seed coat comprises an exotesta, 6-8 mesotesta and an endotesta. Any crystals, phenolic-like compounds, idioblasts, and the sclereids are not found in pericarp as well as seed coat. An overall development confirms Solanade type of embryogenesis in Abeliophyllum. The endocarp becomes more prominent in mature fruit and all the layers of endocarp are highly lignified. On the basis of mechanical layer the seed coat is of exotestal type.
Pericarp and seedcoat removal treatments were tested to determine their effectiveness in the hard-to-germinate botanical seeds of jerusalem artichoke. Fresh seed of five Helianthus tuberosus L.varieties were (A)untreated (B)water soaked overnight (C) soaked overnight followed by renoval of pericarp or (D) soaked overnight followed by renoval of pericarp and seedcoat. The results indicate that treatments which removed the pericarp and seedcoat were the very effective, giving germination of over 90%. A considerable increase in germination did not follow only the peri-carp removal treatments. The factors inhibitory to germination of fresh jerusalem artichoke seed is associated withthe seedcoat. The removal treatment of pericarp and seed-cost is recommended despite its complexity because it givesa high germination percentage and varies least from varietyto variety. Heliarthus tuberosus L., a biomass potential crop, is a member of the family compositae. The genus Helianthushas provided man with two food plants, the sunflower (H.annus) and the jerusalem artichoke or topinambour (H. tube-rosus) . (3) The jerusalem artichoke grown for its tubers, has always been an extremely minor crop, but it is stillgrown in many places as a food for man or livestock and forthe production of alcohoL. Though tubers are used for pro-pagation jerusalem artichoke also flower and produce seedin head-like in florescences. Flowers are developed acro-petaLly on flattened receptacles such that outermost flowers are oldest. Each of these epigynous flowers may develop an achene-type fruit in which outer layers of the overy wallpersist, while inner layers become disorganized. Insidethe ovary wall of mature fruit, there is a papery seedcoat, probably composed of compact cells from endosperm, integu-ments, and nucellus. In general, the efforts to improving this crop havebeen hampered by the hard-to-germinate botanical seed.Seeds did not germinate for at least IL months after harvest.Fresh seeds of some varieties require one year more to gar-minate. (5) Since the time factor between generations isof concern in a prospective breeding program of jerusalemartichoke , these observations led to investigation of thenature of delayed seed germination in jerusalem artichokeas a biomass potential crop.
Sugars and organic acids in Korean hot pepper fruit (C, annuum L.) according to its portions, pericarp, seeds and placenta, were determined by gas liquid chromatography (GLC). ${\alpha}-\;and\;{\beta}-fructoses,\;{\alpha}-\;and\;{\beta}-glucoses$, galactose, sucrose and maltose were identified. Major sugar in pericarp was fructose, while those in seeds and placenta were surose and fructose. Amount of free sugars in seeds was higher than that in pericarp or placenta. Succinic, fumaric, malic, tartaric, citric and quinic acids were found. Citric acid was a major organic acid found in pericarp and placenta. The amount of each identified organic acid, however, was similar in seeds. Quantity of total organic acids identified in pericarp or placenta was higher than that in seeds.

This study was conducted to determine the dormancy types and optimal germination conditions of Prunus mandshurica seeds. The pericarp of P. mandshurica seeds was presumed to be the reason for their poor water absorption. After the pericarp was removed with a razor blade, germination was observed to be less than 20.0% at all temperatures except at 5℃, suggesting the presence of physiological dormancy. Germination gradually increased at 5℃ after the removal of seed coat, reaching a final germination rate of 86.7% at 14 weeks of incubation. Based on these results, P. mandshurica seeds have a physiological dormancy. When seeds with removed pericarp were subjected to cold stratification, the germination percentage (rate) in the control group was low even at 16 weeks; however, the germination percentages in the 4, 8, and 12-week cold stratification groups were notably high with 93.3, 73.3, and 100.0%, respectively. The control group in the GA3 treatment experiment with seed coats removed showed minimal germination, but at 10 weeks, the germination percentage rose to 98.3% when treated with GA3 at 100 mg/L. Thus, it is necessary to scarify or completely remove the pericarp of P. mandshurica seeds to promote germination. After pericarp removal, it is important to subject the seeds to cold stratification at 5℃ for at least 4 weeks or treat them with GA3 at 100 mg/L.
The berry growth and pericarp characteristics were characterized to confirm the effects of bagging periods on berry cracking during berry development in 'Kyoho' grape. The berry weight was the highest at 13.4 g in late period of bagging treated at 7 to 9 weeks after full bloom (WAFB) as compared with the lowest of 12.3 g in total period bagging. The berry cracking rate under critical turgor pressure in the non-bagging control was 53.3%, while those of bagging treatments were decreased in the order of 42.7%, 37.3%, 33.3%, and 18.7% in bagged during 3 to 9, 3 to 5, 5 to 7, and 7 to 9 WAFB, respectively. In the results of observation on histological characteristics of pericarp, berry lenticels of whole bagging treatments had smaller and normal shape compared with non-bagging control treatment. Especially on the pericarp of late period bagged during 7 to 9 WAFB, suberization around stomata and micro-cracking were not observed and structural strength of pericarp was increased with thicker sub-epidermal layer and cell wall. Therefore, the results indicate that bagging treatment for two weeks just before the veraison when the day length and daylight is relatively longer and stronger can effectively reduce berry cracking by strengthening structure of pericarp in 'Kyoho' grape.
Bran structure and gelatinization property of upland and lowland japonica waxy brown rice were compared. Dimension, weight and number of aleurone layer were similar between upland(Nonglimna 1) and lowland(Shinsunchalbyeo) rices, but the aleurone layer and pericarp of upland rice were thicker. Water uptake rate of upland rice at $60^{\circ}C$ was lower than that of lowland one. There was no difference in intrinsic viscosity between two rice starches. Upland rice starch had lower onset temperature, narrower gelatinization temperature and lower water content lot gelatinization compared with lowland rice starch.

Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of ethanol fraction of three different rice (Oryzasativa L. var. japonica) grain (Jakwangchalbyeo, red-pericarp glutinous rice; Hwasunchalbyeo, white-pericarp glutinous rice; Ilpumbyeo, white-pericarp non-glutinous rice) extracts on the protection of oxidative stress. Antioxidant activities of ethanol fraction of rice grain extracts were made with MTT cell viability assay in H4IIE cell that is challenged with hydrogen peroxide. Hwasunchalbyeo extract and Ilpumbyeo extract did not show any significant protective effects on the $H_2O_2-induced$ oxidative stress in B4IIE cells, and Jakwangchalbyeo extract improved the cell viability up to $82\%\;and\;74\%$ at concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$ for 5 h and 24 h treatment, respectively. In conclusion, red-pericarp Jakwangchalbyeo extract as compared with other rice extracts exerted significant inhibitory effects on the hydyogen peroxideinduced oxidative stress in the H4IIE cells.
