  • Biopolymer based on microbial ${\beta}$-glucan and xanthan gum is a rising geotechnical material that can enhance the cohesion between soil particles and consequently reduce soil erosion. Recently, biopolymer is proposed to utilize for the riverbank strengthening. As an effort of the ecological assessment of biopolymer application in civil engineering, this study examined the effects of biopolymer on seed germination and growth of nine plant species inhabiting in the Korean riverside. Responses of above-ground growth to the biopolymer differed among plant species. One species grew less but others maintained their growth when plants were grown in the soil with biopolymer. In contrast, root grew more vigorously and root/shoot ratio decreased in the biopolymer across testing plant species. These results indicate that biopolymer application on the river bank likely stimulate root growth of native plant species, which, in turn, possibly reinforces riverbank. Species specific responses of above-ground growth implies that ecological effects of biopolymer application would depend on the species composition of the ecosystem.

  • Traffic Sign Recognition(TSR) is an important element in an Advanced Driver Assistance System(ADAS). However, many studies related to TSR approaches only in normal daytime environment because a sign's unique color doesn't appear in poor environment such as night time, snow, rain or fog. In this paper, we propose a new TSR algorithm based on machine learning for daytime as well as poor environment. In poor environment, traditional methods which use RGB color region doesn't show good performance. So we extracted sign characteristics using HoG extraction, and detected signs using a Support Vector Machine(SVM). The detected sign is recognized by a decision tree based on 25 reference points in a Normalized RGB system. The detection rate of the proposed system is 96.4% and the recognition rate is 94% when applied in poor environment. The testing was performed on an Intel i5 processor at 3.4 GHz using Full HD resolution images. As a result, the proposed algorithm shows that machine learning based detection and recognition methods can efficiently be used for TSR algorithm even in poor driving environment.

  • In this paper, we propose the development of a small $360^{\circ}$ oral scanner lens module. The proposed small $360^{\circ}$ oral scanner lens module consists of a small $360^{\circ}$ high resolution(4MegaPixel) lens optical system, a 15mm image sensor unit, and a small $360^{\circ}$ mouth scanner lens external shape. A small $360^{\circ}$ high resolution lens optical system produces a total of nine lenses, the outer diameter of the lens not less than 15mm for use by children through the ages of adulthood. Light drawn by a small $360^{\circ}$ high resolution lens optical system is $90^{\circ}$ flexion so that image images are delivered to image sensors. The 15mm image sensor unit sends the converted value to the ISP(Image Signal Processor) of the embedded board after an image array through the column and the row address of the image sensor. The small $360^{\circ}$ mouth scanner lens outer shape was designed to fix the race to the developed lens. Results from authorized testing agencies to assess the performance of proposed small $360^{\circ}$ oral scanner lens modules, The optical resolving power of $360^{\circ}$ lens was more than 30% at 150 cycles/mm, $360^{\circ}$ lens angle was $360^{\circ}$ in vertical direction, $42^{\circ}{\sim}85^{\circ}$ in vertical direction, and lens distortion rate was 5% or less. It produced the same result as the world's highest level.

  • Meteor Burst Communication can provide effective and economical means of communication where long distance VHF NLOS data transmission is needed ; often ranges more than 1000 km. It has been, however, so far considered unsuitable for short distance application because of phenomenal decrease in burst durations, which leads to decreation of total duty rate of the system. This paper extensively analyzes characteristics of shot distance MB(Meteor Burst) path and shows the low duty rate may be improved by increasing burst rate through adapting antennal beam width to cover entire hot-spot region in the space and, by compensating effective burst length throughcutting down man-made noises introduced by antennal. Based on the analysis, we are developed a small-opening-cavity antennal, especially designed for short distance MB path. In operation, the antenna is to be buried under ground surface so as to improve directivity and reduces noise introduction. The antennal exhibits power gain of 3 dB with 90 degree beam width and thus enables to illuminate entire hot-spot regions with the elevation angle of 8-90 degree which is the case of transmission less than 100 km. Directivity horizontal to earth surface is suppressed to minimum which enables to cut man-made noises from near-by sources down to more than 3 dB from the level reported with conventional 4 element Yagi. A series of experiments performed on 100km MB paths have conformed that, with the antenna installed at receiving site, the burst rate and duration time have been noticed to increase by 10 and 20 percent respectively from the values obtained by conventional 4-element Yagi antennal under same testing condition.

  • In this paper, the effects of a metamaterial slab with negative permeability in a magnetically coupled wireless power transfer system (WPT) in the overall performance are analyzed quantitatively in terms of the effective quality factors of the loop resonators and coupling coefficient considering the slab losses, based on an equivalent circuit. Using the ideal metamaterial slab(lossless slab), the WPT efficiency is improved considerably by the magnetic flux focusing. However, the practical lossy slab made of RRs or SRRs limits the significant enhancement of WPT efficiency due to the relatively high losses in the slab consisting of RRs or SRRs near the resonant frequency. For the practical loop resonator, other than a point magnetic charge, using the practical lossy metamaterial slab in order to improve the transfer efficiency, the width of the slab needs to be optimized somewhat less than the half of the distance between two loop resonators. For the low-loss slab with its loss tangent of 0.001, the WPT efficiency is maximized at 93 % when the ratio of the slab width and the distance between the two resonators is approximately 0.35, compared with 53 % for the case without the slab. The efficiency in case of employing the high-low slab(loss tangent: 0.2) is maximized at 61 % when the slab ratio is 0.25.

  • The CATR(Compact Antenna Test Range) is a testing facility which is to provide the uniform plane wave by using the reflector. As the ripple of the uniform plane wave caused by the diffraction rays at the edge of the reflector, serrations are attached at the edge of the reflector to minimize the ripple of the uniform plane wave in the CATR. The diffraction field of the serration is normally analyzed by the Fresnel diffraction formula which is expressed as the double integration, and the structure of the serration is expressed as Fourier series to apply the double integration of the Fresnel diffraction formula. In this paper, the novel shark-fin shaped serrations which have the height modulation of the adjacent serrations are proposed. And the triangular serrations and the novel shark-fin shaped serrations are compared to confirm that the performance of the quiet zone by the shark-fin shaped serrations is better than by the triangular serrations. It is also confirmed that the novel shark-fin shaped serrations which have the height modulation of the adjacent serrations are lower ripple than which have the same height of the adjacent serrations. Accordingly, the novel shark-fin shaped serrations with the height modulation can be used at the edge of the reflector to provide the uniform plane wave in CATR.

  • In this paper a back-propagation neural network model is developed to estimate the preconsolidation pressure of Korean soft soils based on 176 oedometer tests and 63 piezocone test results, which were compiled from 11 sites - western and southern parts of Korea. Only 147 data were used for the training of the neural network and 29 data, which were not used during the training phase, were used for the verification of trained network. Empirical and theoretical models were compared with the developed neural network model. A simple 4-4-9-1 multi-layered neural network has been developed. The cone tip resistance $q_T$ penetration pore pressure $u_2$, total overburden pressure $\sigma_{vo}$ and effective overburden pressure $\sigma'_{vo}$ were selected as input variables. The developed neural network model was validated by comparing the prediction results of the proposed neural network model for the new data which were not used for the training of the model with the measured preconsolidation pressures. It can also predict more precise and reliable preconsolidation pressures than the analytical and empirical model. Furthermore, it can be carefully concluded that neural network model can be used as a generalized model for prediction of preconsolidation pressure throughout Korea since developed model shows good performance for the new data which were not used in both training and testing data.

  • Drive-train friction loss in a vehicle may account for 4% of its total fuel consumption loss. An ATF W/C (auto-transmission fluid warmer/cooler) plate-fin heat exchanger is a type of heat exchanger that uses metal plates to transfer heat between the auto-transmission fluid and coolant. The use of an ATF W/C heat exchanger can result in a fuel economy improvement of about 1% in vehicles. An experimental setup for testing the thermal performance of an ATF W/C plate-fin heat exchanger is developed. In this study, the influence of the ATF and coolant, flow rates, and temperature on the efficiency of an ATF W/C heat exchanger are investigated experimentally. From the experimental data, a simple correlation for predicting the efficiency of an ATF W/C heat exchanger is proposed. On the basis of this correlation, the fuel economy of a vehicle with and without an ATF W/C heat exchanger is compared by using Simulink. Finally, it is shown that the fuel economy is improved by 0.992% when an ATF W/C heat exchanger is installed in the vehicle.

  • A steel-plate concrete composite beam is composed of a steel plate, concrete and shear connector to combine inhomogeneous two materials. The steel plate is assembled by welding an existing composite beam. In this study, new steel-plate concrete composite beam, called a SPC Beam, was developed to reduce the shear connector and improve the workability. The SPC Beam was composed of folding steel plates and concrete, without a shear connector. The folding steel plate was assembled using high strength bolt instead of welding. To improve the workability in field construction, a hat-shaped Cap was attached to the junction with a slab. Monotonic load testing under two points was conducted under displacement control mode. The flexural strength of the specimen for positive moment and negative moment was calculated using the plastic stress distribution method. The test results showed that the flexural strength of the new SPC Beam had 80% of the strength of a complete composite beam. In addition, increasing the composite ratio was possible through clearance controls of the cap. In this study, the performance of the SPC Beam was verified through additional experiments and analyses with the cross-sectional shape and cap as variables, because the representative shape in the positive negative moment region is targeted.

  • In this study, a Korean native cattle strain (Hanwoo) evidencing high performance in terms of both meat quality and quantity was employed in the generation of 150,000 BAC clones with an average insert size of 140 kb, and corresponding to about a 6X coverage of bovine chromosomal DNA. The BAC clones were pooled in a mini-scale via three rounds of a pooling protocol, and the efficiency of this pooling protocol was evaluated by testing the accuracy of accessibility to the positive clones, via a PCR-based screening method. Two sets of primers designed from each of two known genes were tested, and each yielded 2 or 3 positive clones for each gene, thereby indicating that the BAC library pooling system was appropriate with regard to the accession of the target BAC clones. Analyses of $3.3{\times}10^6$ base pairs obtained from the 7,090 BAC end sequence (BES) showed that 34.88% of the DNA sequence harbored the repetition sequence. Analysis of the 7,090 BES to the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ generation radiation hybrid map of the cattle genome, using the COMPASS program designed for the construction of a cattle-human comparative mapping, resulted in the localization of a total of 1,374 clones proximal to 339 $1^{st}$ generation markers, and 1,721 clones proximal to 664 $2^{nd}$ generation markers. Collectively, the BAC library and pooling system of the BAC clones from the Korean cattle, coupled with the chromosome-localized BAC clones, will provide us with novel tools for the excavation of desired clones for genome mapping and sequencing, and will also furnish us with additional information regarding breed differences in cattle.
