Statistical Analysis of Clinical Nursing Competency and Self-Efficacy in Nursing Students

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical nursing competence and self-efficacy of 4th and 2nd semester nursing college students who completed most of the performance-based nursing education curriculum. It was attempted to develop competency evaluation and competency-based curriculum. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, $scheff{\bar{e}}$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression in SPSS WIN 24.0 program. The findings of this study were as follows. 1) The knowledge level of essential basic nursing skills received a score of 88.95. The overall average score of clinical performance was 3.15 out of 5. The mean score of self-efficacy was $4.14{\pm}0.57$ points on 6 points 2) Among the general characteristics of subjects, 'motivation of major selection' and 'satisfaction of practice time' differed in the knowledge of essential basic nursing skills, 'religion' and 'health status' differed in clinical performance ability and 'interpersonal relationship', 'motivation of major selection', 'major satisfaction', 'satisfaction of practice time', 'nursing satisfaction', 'desired working period' and 'average rating' differed in self-efficacy. 3) The self-efficacy showed a significant positive correlation with the clinical nursing competency including the knowledge of essential basic nursing skills and clinical performance ability. The nursing satisfaction, clinical performance ability, the knowledge of essential basic nursing skills, interpersonal relationship and average rating influenced significantly and explained 23.7% of the subjects' self-efficacy.

간호사의 간호역량이 직무만족과 간호업무성과에 미치는 영향 (An Analysis of Nursing Competency affecting on Job Satisfaction and Nursing Performance among Clinical Nurses)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of nursing competency of nurses on job satisfaction and nursing performance. Method: Using a structured questionnaire, data were collected from 368 nurses. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and pearson correlation coefficient with SAS package were used for data analysis. Results: The total mean score for nursing competency was 2.65, with scores for subcategories as follows: ethical competency 2.74, personal competency 2.65, esthetical competency 2.64, and scientific competency 2.61. The mean score of total job satisfaction was 3.18 on a 5 point scale, and nursing performance was 2.97 on a 4 point scale. Total nursing competency and total subcategories of nursing competency perceived by nurses were positively related to job satisfaction and nursing performance. Conclusion: In conclusion, nursing competency of nurses influence job satisfaction and nursing performance. With these result, it is necessary to concentrate on improving nursing competency of nurses to increase job satisfaction and nursing performance.

간호대학생의 자기주도학습, 핵심간호술 수행자신감, 임상실습 교육환경과 임상수행능력 간의 관계 (Correlations among Self-directed Learning, Confidence of Performance in Core Nursing Skills, Clinical Learning Environment and Clinical Competency in Nursing Students)

  • 본 연구는 G시에 소재하는 간호대학생 178명을 대상으로 자기주도학습, 핵심간호술 수행자신감, 임상실습 교육환경 및 임상수행능력 간의 상관관계를 살펴보기 위한 서술적 조사연구이다. 자료수집은 2019년 9월 24일부터 10월 19일까지 이루어졌으며, 자료분석은 IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 프로그램을 사용하여 변수의 평균과 표준편차, 실수와 백분율로 분석하였고, 일반적 특성에 따른 변수의 차이는 independent t-test, ANOVA로 분석하였고, 변수 간의 상관관계는 Pearson's correlation coefficients로 분석하였다. 연구결과, 자기주도학습 3.36점, 핵심간호술 수행자신감 3.42점, 임상실습 교육환경 3.20점, 임상수행능력 3.66이었다. 자기주도학습, 핵심간호술 수행자신감, 임상실습 교육환경과 임상수행능력 간에는 유의한 정적 상관관계가 있었다. 이에 간호대학생의 임상수행능력을 향상사키기 위하여 핵심간호술 교육을 체계화하고, 유기적인 산학협력을 통하여 임상실습 교육환경을 지속적으로 개선시켜 나가야 할 것이다.

치위생대학생의 현장실습교육환경과 임상수행능력 간의 관계 (Relation between clinical learning environment and clinical performance competency in dental hygiene students)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relation between factors related to the clinical performance competency of dental hygiene students and their clinical learning environment. Methods: The study conducted a survey of dental hygiene students from October 18 to 30, 2023. The data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance, t-test, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The total practicum lasted ≤10 weeks, 11-15 weeks, and ≥16 weeks for 41.7%, 33.5%, and 24.8% of the students, respectively. Half of them had experience at only one clinical institution. Clinical learning environment had an average score of 3.46 points, whereas the average clinical performance competency of the participants was 3.60 points. The major influencing factors on clinical performance competency were identified as preceptor' s guidance (β=0.277), work participation opportunities (β=0.213), and perceived importance of clinical practice (β=0.136). Conclusions: Efforts are required to provide students with prior education on the importance of clinical practice, improve the clinical learning environment with a focus on preceptor's guidance and work participation opportunities. And standardize various elements to resolve differences in the practice of clinical institutions across regions.

임상간호사의 의사소통능력과 감성지능이 조직성과에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Clinical Nurses' Communication Competency and Emotional Intelligence on Organizational Performance)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of clinical nurses' communication competency and emotional intelligence on organizational performance. Methods: Two hundred and fifty nurses who currently work at two superior general hospitals in Seoul, Korea, participated in the study. Data were collected between March and April, 2015. Global Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale (GICC-15) developed by Hur (2003) was used to measure communication competency. Wong & Law's emotional intelligence scale (WLEIS) developed by Wong & Law (2002) was used to measure emotional intelligence. Organizational performance scale developed by Brewer & Selden (2000) was used to measure organizational performance. Results: The results were summarized as follows: 1) The means of communication competency, emotional intelligence and organizational performance were 3.61, 4.84, and 3.59 respectively. 2) There were positive correlations between communication competency, emotional intelligence and organizational performance. 3) The variance of organizational performance accounted for was 26.0% (adj $R^2=.26$). Conclusion: These findings suggest that developing human resources in nursing is important for better organizational performance.

Development and evaluation of a pediatric nursing competency-building program for nursing students in South Korea: a quasi-experimental study

  • Purpose: The present study aimed to develop and examine the effectiveness of a pediatric nursing competency-building program for nursing students. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design conducted between October and December 2021. The participants included 40 nursing students (20 each in the experimental and control groups) at a university in a South Korean city. The pediatric nursing competency-building program integrated problem-based learning and simulation into clinical field practice. The experimental group participated in the program, while the control group did not. Data were analyzed using the 𝑥2 test, the independent t-test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: Pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance showed a greater increase in the experimental group than in the control group. However, the change in problem-solving ability in the experimental group was not significantly different from that in the control group. Conclusion: The pediatric nursing competency-building program effectively improved students' pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance.

간호대학생의 간호정보활용역량이 문제해결능력, 자기주도적 학습능력 및 임상수행능력에 미치는 영향에 대한 융합적 연구 (Convergence Study of Influence of Nursing Information Literacy Competency on Problem Solving Ability, Self-Directed Learning Ability and Clinical Performance Ability in Nursing Students)

  • 본 연구는 간호대학생의 간호정보활용역량과 문제해결능력, 자기주도적 학습능력, 임상수행능력의 인과관계에 대한 경로모형을 구축하고 검증하기 위해 시도되었다. 간호학과 4학년에 재학 중인 208명을 대상으로 설문지를 이용하여 2018년 6월 4일부터 6월 18일까지 자료를 수집하였다. 연구결과 간호대학생의 간호정보활용역량은 문제해결능력(${\gamma}=.70$, p<.001)), 자기주도적 학습능력(${\gamma}=.53$, p<.001)에 유의한 직접효과를 나타내고, 임상수행능력에 유의한 직접(${\gamma}=.31$, p<.001) 및 간접효과(${\gamma}=.31$, p=.007)를 나타냈다. 이들 변수들의 임상수행능력에 대한 설명력은 46.2%였다. 따라서 간호대학생의 문제해결능력, 자기주도적 학습능력 및 임상수행능력을 향상시키기 위해서는 간호정보활용역량을 강화시킬 수 있는 교육프로그램 개발을 권장한다.

Resident Perceptions of Competency-Based Korean Medicine Education: A Qualitative, Content Analysis Study Conducted using Focus Group Interviews

  • Objectives: The new educational system emphasizes acquisition of clinical competency by the time of graduation from Korean medicine colleges that allow Korean medicine doctors to immediately perform clinical tasks. This study investigated awareness of competency-based education in Korean medicine hospital residents who must simultaneously undergo training and assist medical students in clinical practice. Methods: This was a qualitative research that was conducted using focus group interviews (FGIs) to investigate the awareness of demands for improvement in competency-based Korean medicine education in Korean medicine hospital. To apply the principles and procedures of FGIs, a semi-structured questionnaire was developed. Data analysis was conducted using the five steps of framework analysis. Results: According to contents analysis, first competency-based education that reflects actual clinical practice tasks is needed. Second, sufficient basic skill mastery education must be reinforced. Third, an intermediate curriculum that mediates clinical practice and basic education is needed. Fourth, the Objective Structured Clinical Examination and Clinical Performance Examination must be expanded to prepare for the Korean medicine doctor practical test. Conclusions: Korean medicine residents reported the gap between clinical practice and use of knowledge and skills acquired in the curriculum while acting as direct observers and educations of clinical clerkship in hospitals. Based on this exploratory study it is necessary to conduct research on the educational competency of Korean medicine residents who play an important role as educational leaders in Korean medicine clinical practice training.

병원 간호사의 지각된 간호관리역량에 대한 중요도와 수행도 (Clinical Nurses' Perception on the Importance and Performance of Nursing Managerial Competencies)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate clinical nurses' perception on nursing managerial competencies. Methods: This was a descriptive study. The data were collected from 198 nurse managers who had worked in six general hospitals using a self-reporting questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Importance-Performance Analysis. Results: Only 32% of the participants had experienced nursing managerial competency training. The mean score for perceived performance of nursing managerial competency was lower than that for perceived importance. There were significant differences in perceived importance, performance, and importance-performance gaps among head, charge, and staff nurses. Importance-performance analysis showed that three of the 30 nursing managerial competencies require further development: staffing, human resources development and education, and nursing standard development competency. There were significant differences in importance-performance gaps according to age, career years in current hospital, work shift, position, nursing delivery system, and nursing managerial competency-education experience. Conclusion: A training program for developing and improving nursing managerial competencies which is focused on the gaps in importance and performance level is needed for clinical nurses. In addition, it should be considered to improve nursing work conditions such as nursing delivery system and formal appointment in order to increase the performance of nursing managerial competencies.

간호사의 간호역량과 상사의 직무역량 인식정도가 업무성과에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Nurse's Competency Empowerment and Boss' Job Competency Recognition Level on Work Performance)

  • Purpose: This study is to investigate the effect of nurse's competency empowerment and boss' job competency recognition on work performance. Methods: 216 nurses participated for data collection which was conducted from September 1, 2011 to September 10, 2011. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 16.0 and with frequency test, ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ test and Multiple regression. Results: Firstly, the work performance in accordance with subject's general characteristics was found to be significant in the 50s, graduate school or higher education, Roman Catholic, charge nurse and 21-years or older. Secondly, the correlation among nurse's competency empowerment, boss' competency recognition and work performance was found to be positively related (r=.501~.639, p<.001). Thirdly, competency empowerment was found to be the most effective factor for work performance, followed by boss' competency recognition and career year, and these factors accounted for 63.5%. Conclusion: As the results show that the work performance is highly affected by the nurse's competency empowerment, boss' competency recognition level and career level in clinical environment, effective education programs are required to provide an appropriate experience to both entry-level and experienced nurses, as well as to enhance boss' competency empowerment at the same time.
