Comparison of Asset Management Approaches to Optimize Navigable Waterway Infrastructure

  • An estimated investment gap of $176 billion needs to be filled over the next ten years to improve America's inland waterway transportation systems. Many of these infrastructure systems are now beyond their original 50-year design life and are often behind in maintenance due to funding constraints. Therefore, long-term maintenance strategies (i.e., asset management (AM) strategies) are needed to optimize investments across these waterway systems to improve their condition. Two common AM strategies include policy-driven maintenance and performance-driven maintenance. Currently, limited research exists on selecting the optimal AM approach for managing inland waterway transportation assets. Therefore, the goal of this study is to provide a decision model that can be used to select the optimal alternative between the two AM approaches by considering key uncertainties such as asset condition, asset test results, and asset failure. We achieve this goal by addressing the decision problem as a single-criterion problem, which calculates each alternative's expected value and certain equivalence using allocated monetary values to determine the recommended alternative for optimally maintaining navigable waterways. The decision model considers estimated and predicted values based on the current state of the infrastructure. This research concludes that the performance-based approach is the optimal alternative based on the expected value obtained from the analysis. This research sets the stage for further studies on fiscal constraints that will effectively optimize these assets condition.

A preliminary case study of resilience and performance of rehabilitated buildings subjected to earthquakes

  • Current codes design the buildings based on life safety criteria. In a performance-based design (PBD) approach, decisions are made based on demands, such as target displacement and performance of structure in use. This type of design prevents loss of life but does not limit damages or maintain functionality. As a newly developed method, resilience-based design (RBD) aims to maintain functionality of buildings and provide liveable conditions after strong ground movement. In this paper, the seismic performance of plain and strengthened RC frames (an eight-story and two low-rise) is evaluated. In order to evaluate earthquake performance of the frames, the performance points of the frames are calculated by the capacity spectrum method (CSM) of ATC-40. This method estimates earthquake-induced deformation of an inelastic system using a reduced response spectrum. Finally, the seismic performances of the frames are evaluated and the results are compared with a resilience-based design criterion.

Mohr-Coulomb 파괴곡면에 근사하는 암석의 3차원 파괴조건식 고찰 (Study on a 3-Dimensional Rock Failure Criterion Approximating to Mohr-Coulomb Surface)

  • 암석의 파괴조건식으로 Mohr-Coulomb 및 Hoek-Brown 함수가 널리 이용되고 있으나 이들 함수는 중간주 응력을 고려할 수 없다는 단점이 있다. 최근의 연구결과에 의하면 암석의 파괴강도는 중간주응력의 크기에 많은 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 주요 암반구조물의 안전설계를 위해서는 중간주응력이 고려된 3차원 암석파괴조건식이 도입될 필요성이 있다. 이 연구에서는 주응력좌표계의 자오면에서 선형으로 나타나며 또한 Mohr-Coulomb 파괴곡면의 모서리에 부드럽게 접하는 3차원 파괴함수인 Jiang & Pietruszczak(1988) 함수가 암석의 진삼축압축강도 예측에 활용될 수 있는 가능성에 대하여 논의하였다. Jiang & Pietruszczak 함수를 이용하여 실제 진삼축압축시험 결과를 모사함으로써 이 함수의 성능을 평가하였다.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 고형폐기물의 메탄발생 특성을 나타내기 위한 1차 반응식과 S형태 식들의 적합성을 평가하는 것이다. S형태 식은 수정 Gompertz와 Logistic 식을 사용하였다. 모델의 적합성을 평가하기 위해 잔차제곱합, 표준제곱근 오차, Akaike's information criterion 등의 통계분석을 실시하였다. AIC (Akaike's information criterion)는 모델의 변수 개수 차이에 따른 모델 적합성을 비교하기 위하여 적용하였다. 1차 반응식의 경우 지체기를 고려하지 않을 때보다 고려하였을 경우 잔차제곱합과 표준제곱근 오차는 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 1차 반응식의 경우 S형태 식보다 AIC가 상대적으로 높게 나타났다. 이는 S형태 식이 1차 반응식보다 메탄발생특성을 나타낼 때에 더욱 적합한 것으로 사료된다.

  • The weak classifier of AdaBoost algorithm is a central classification element that uses a single criterion separating positive and negative learning candidates. Finding the best criterion to separate two feature distributions influences learning capacity of the algorithm. A common way to classify the distributions is to use the mean value of the features. However, positive and negative distributions of Haar-like feature as an image descriptor are hard to classify by a single threshold. The poor classification ability of the single threshold also increases the number of boosting operations, and finally results in a poor classifier. This paper proposes a weak classifier that uses multiple criterions by adding a probabilistic criterion of the positive candidate distribution with the conventional mean classifier: the positive distribution has low variation and the values are closer to the mean while the negative distribution has large variation and values are widely spread. The difference in the variance for the positive and negative distributions is used as an additional criterion. In the learning procedure, we use a new classifier that provides a better classifier between them by selective switching between the mean and standard deviation. We call this new type of combined classifier the "Mixed Weak Classifier". The proposed weak classifier is more robust than the mean classifier alone and decreases the number of boosting operations to be converged.

  • 수송기기의 연비향상과 에너지 절감을 위하여 자동차 업계를 비롯한 각종 산업 전반에 마그네슘 합금의 적용이 확대되고 있는 추세이다. 조밀육방 격자 구조(HCP)를 갖는 마그네슘 합금의 경우, 낮은 성형성과 강한 소성 비대칭성 및 소성 이방성으로 인하여 실제 부품의 적용에 많은 제약조건이 수반되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 CPB06 항복함수를 이용하여 AZ31의 인장-압축 비대칭성을 모델링하고 이를 이용하여 AZ31 튜브의 압괴해석을 수행하고자 하였다.

  • In phylogenetic tree construction the neighbor-joining algorithm is the most well known method which constructs a trivalent tree from a pairwise distance data measured by DNA sequences. The core part of the algorithm is its cherry picking criterion based on the tree structure of each quartet. We give a generalized version of the criterion based on the exact box model of quartets, known as the tight span of a metric. We also show by experiment why neighbor-joining and the quartet consistency count method give similar performance.

정보기준과 다중 중심점을 활용한 클러스터별 예측 (Prediction on Clusters by using Information Criterion and Multiple Seeds)

  • 본 연구에서는 시계열 자료를 베이지안 정보기준을 통해 클러스터링 한다. 보다 안정적인 클러스터를 생산하기 위해 다중 중심점을 모델링한 후 이를 이용하여 클러스터를 생성시킨다. 대상 시계열 자료에 대해 예측할 경우 클러스터에 속한 시계열 자료 중 가장 유사한 시계열 자료를 선택하여 모델링한다. 모델로부터 마코프 규칙을 유도해 내고 이 규칙을 이용해 예측정확도를 측정한다. 시계열 자료를 단독으로 모델링한 후 예측한 결과보다 클러스터에 속한 유사시계열 모델링을 통한 예측정확도가 좀 더 높았음을 확인하였다.

  • This paper is related to optimization in the image data format, which can make a great effect in performance of data compression and is based on the wavelet transform and JPEG2000. This paper established a criterion to decide the data format to be used in wavelet transform, which is on the bases of the data errors in frequency transform and quantization. This criterion has been used to extract the optimal data format experimentally. The result were (1, 9) of 10-bit fixed-point format for filter coefficients and (9, 7) of 16-bit fixed-point data format for wavelet coefficients and their optimality was confirmed.

A fracture criterion for high-strength steel structural members containing notch-shape defects

  • This paper deals with the formulation and development of fracture criteria for high-strength structural members containing surface damage in the form of notches (i.e., blunt defects). The important role of the yield strength of the material and its strain hardening capacity (evaluated by means of the constitutive law or stress-strain curve) is analysed in depth by considering the fracture performance of notched samples taken from high-strength steels with different levels of cold drawing (the most heavily drawn steel being commercial prestressing steel used in prestressed concrete). The final aim of the paper is to establish fracture-based design criteria for structural members made of steels with distinct yield strength and containing very different kinds of notch-shape surface damage.
