Glycyrrhizae radix, commonly known as licorice, is a perennial herb belonging to Leguminosae and also includes various components such as, glycyrrhizin, liquiritin, liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin etc. Licorice has been widely used in East Asia as a medicine having pharmacological effects like antioxidants, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and immune modulatory activities. Among various licorice, Glycyrrhiza (G.) uralensis G. glabra and G. inflata are used for pharmaceutical purposes in Korea. However, cultivation of licorice has some problems such as low quality, low productivity, and early leaf drop. Korea Rural Development Administration developed new cultivars Wongam and Sinwongam, which are improved in cultivation and quality. To register the newly developed cultivar (s) on Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea as a medicine, it is necessary to prove the similarity and difference through the comparative studies between already-registered species and new cultivars. Some fungi and bacteria usually in the human oral cavity and intestines exist as harmless state in human body. Also, the skin and genital infections by fungi can lead to toxic systemic infections and are accompanied by flushing, rashes, burning or painful sensation. The influences of licorice varieties on fungi and bacteria might be an evidence to prove the outstanding effect of newly developed licorice variety. In this study, the antifungal and antibacterial activity was investigated using newly developed licorice varieties Wongam, and Sinwongam against various fungi and bacteria. These results means newly developed licorice could be used as a replacement of already-registered species in terms of antifungal and antibacterial application.
Glehnia littoralis (Umbelliferae), a perennial herb distributed along the coastline of northern Pacific countries, is the medicinal plant used traditionally for treatment of various diseases. This review focuses on the various pharmacological activities of Glehnia littoralis for understanding about its traditional medicinal applications, medicinal uses in the modern society, and potentials for drug development Glehnia littoralis was reported to have anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, anti-amnesic, blood circulation-promoting, immunomodulatory, anti-microbial, and allelopathic activities. However, their mechanisms remain to be clarified. Because Glehnia littoralis has been prescribed in traditional Oriental medicine as a tonic herb, Glehnia littoralis can be better than other chemical drugs and medicines which exert the equal pharmacological activities. Although the activities of Glehnia littoralis are not specifically high-potent with unique mode of action, it may turn out that it can be beneficial to exert multiple pharmacological activities. In view of low toxicity, relative cheapness, presence in the diet, and occurrence in various herbal remedies of Glehnia littoralis, it needs to be prudent to evaluate its properties and applications further.
Aconitum triphyllum Nakai, the Korean spontaneous perennial herb, is one of the most important materials of oriental drug Fu-zi(aconite) and has long been used as cardiotonic for arrhythmia, analgesic and antiinflammatory drug in oriental countries. Although the plant is widely used for the preparation of aconite, the composition and amount of the toxic aconitine type alkaloids have not studied so far. As the preliminary study for seasonal variation of major constituents in mother tuber and daughter tuber of the plant, the authors tried to elucidate phytochemical characteristics of $C_{19}-diterpenoid alkaloids by $^{13}C-NMR$ spectra and seasonal variation of the alkaloidal contents by high performance liquid chromatography.

Ginseng is a perennial herb widely used in China, Japan, and Korea. It is also one of the most commonly used herbal medicines in the U.S. Although it is generally considered safe to use, adverse effects associated with ginseng use have been reported. Inappropriate ginseng use, such as high dose administration, may cause insomnia, headaches, diarrhea, as well as cardiovascular and endocrine disorders. Other factors that may contribute to adverse effects of ginseng include the variety of ginseng species, variability in commercial ginseng preparations, and potential ginseng-drug interactions. To minimize adverse effects of ginseng, consumers should be advised to use it appropriately, and the herbal industry should try to provide standardized ginseng preparations.
Size class structure and vegetative growth of a perennial herb of the temperate deciduous forests, Symplocarpus renifolius Schott, were studied from 1991 to 1994 in Namhansansung, Kyonggi Province, Korea. The size class structures of leaf number and leaf area per individual followed bell-shape curve, i.e. frequency of middle class was relatively high. The leaf area increased from the late-March to mid-May. At the end of the growing season, leaf area(length X breadth) was proportional to biomass, especially aboveground biomass. The leaf number and leaf area per individual increased at the rate of 0.08 leaf/year and 9.7 $cm^2/year$, respectively. The size of the individuals in large-sized classes, in leaf number and leaf area, decreased in next year, while the size of the individuals in small-sized classes increased. Therefore, it was concluded that the size class structure of S. renifolius population was largely determined by the growth form.
Ixeris dentata Nakai (Compositae) is a perennial herb and the young shoots when prepared properly are edible as a bitter appetizing vegetable in the early spring. The whole plant has been used as a folk medicine in treating diabetes in Korea. As a part of our studies on bitter substances, we have investigated the bitterness of the plant through a taste-guided fractionation method. Bitter substances were extracted by the solvent fractionation and the bitterness was evaluated by 10 trained panelists consisted with graduate students of Dept. of Foods and Nutrition. It has been revealed that the bitter compounds were distributed throughout the extracting fractions and the higher intensity of the bitterness was seen in the n-BuOH fractions. The bitter compounds were subfractionated by the silica gel column chromatography and the bitterness was evaluated by the trained panelists. The subfractions which were indicated as the bitter compounds will be further studied to isolate the compounds. The H$_2$O fractions were grouped according to the molecular weight through the ultrafiltration and the group with 1,000 < m.w. < 30,000 was evaluated as the most intense bitter subfraction.
Phlomis umbrosa Turcz. ('Sok-dan') is a perennial herb in Labiatae plants. Shanzhiside methyl ester was isolated from butanol extract of this plant. It was obtained as amorphous powder and its molecular formula is $C_{17}H_{26}O_{11}$. Its structure was determined by chemical reactions, spectral analysis and compared with authentic sample of its pentaacetate.
Scopoliae rhizoma is a perennial herb which has a similar effect with atropine on the cardiovascular system. It is also known to have a seditive and anticonvulsant activity on the central nerve system. In order to evaluate an acute toxicity of Scopoliae rhizoma, the present study was performed after administration the Scopoliae rhizoma prepared by both decoctional and frozen dried extract through three different routes (oral; 5,000 mg/kg, intraperitoneal; 2,000 mg/kg, subcutaneous; 5,000 mg/kg) to the female ICR mice. In the group treated intraperitoneally with a frozen dried extract, abnormal clinical signs such as decreased activity, crouch, potosis and abnormal walking were observed for 40 rain after administration. With regard to WBC, decreased number of lymphocyte and increased number of monocyte and granulocyte were also observed in the animals received intraperitoneally with Scopoliae rhizoma extract. Taken together, what toxicity of Scopoliae rhizoma was shown differently depending on its type for administration may be resulted in the differency of administered dose. The results provided here support a pharmacological and toxicological consideration for its clinical use in the regard of oriental medicine.
The Korean Chinese Chives(Allium tuberosum Rottler) are a perennial herb and have been used from ancient as food and medical purpose in Korea. They are known to posses diuresis, sthemia activities and used for the treatment or anemia, haematemesis, and eczema. Recently the Korean Chinese Chives have been studied on the morphologic property, the classification of origin and chemical constituent. However there has not been studied on kg) (or 6 days and observed the hematological effects in dogs. The results are as follows, 1. The red blood cell count was significantly (P < 0.05) decreased on day 2. 2. The reduced glutathion(GSH) concentration was significantly (P< 0.05) increased on day 4 and Met-hemoglobin concentration was significantly (P< 0.05) increased on 3 hrs after administration. 3. Packed cell volume(PCV) and hemoglobin concentration were not showed significant difference during experimental periods. 4. The mean corpuscular volume(MCV) was significantly(P < 0.05) increased on 3 hours after administration.
