  • This study amied to determine the effect of species and seed mixture on productivity, botanical composition and forage quality in middle mountainous region (Geosan) pasture. Total seven experimental pastures (T1 : Orchardgrass, T2 : Timothy, T3 : Tall fescue, T4 : Perennial ryegrass, T5 : Kentucky bluegrass, T6 : Timothy + Orchardgrass + Tall fescue + Alfalfa, T7 : Timothy + Orchardgrass + Kentucky bluegrass + White clover) were established in autumn, 2014 and evaluated for productivity and agronomic characteristics for 2015. Plant heigh was high in Orchardgrass and Perennial ryegrass pasture. Dry matter (DM) content was high in Kentucky bluegrass. Botanical composition in $1^{st}$ harvest was high in shrub, but the grass composition was high in $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ harvest. Fresh and DM yield were higher in Orchardgrass and Perennial ryegrass (p<0.05); whreras, Kentucky bluegrass was the lowest. In seed mixture pasture, yields of T6 plot (Tall fescue) were higher than those of T7 (Kentucky bluegrass). Average CP (crude protein) content of $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ cutting time was 16.91 and 14.79%, respectively and Kentucky blue grass was the highest in $3^{rd}$ cutting time by 17.57%. IVDMD (in vitro dry matter digestibility) showed low in $1^{st}$ cutting and Kentucky bluegrass was the lowest in every cutting time. TDN (total digestible nutrient) content was the highest in $3^{rd}$ cutting and the lowest in $1^{st}$ cutting. These results indicated that Orchardgrass, Perennial ryegrass and T6 are recommendable for productivity and Timothy, Perennial ryegrass and T7 are recommendable for forage quality.

  • This study was initiated to find out the suitable perennial ground covers naturally grown in thirteen organic orchards in Chonnam Province as a organic nutrient source for maintaining annual fruit tree growth. The ground covers were observed in April, June, and August in the orchards. Agropyron tsukusinense and Panicum virgatum observed in April and June, respectively, produced the highest dry weight, which increased amounts of N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$, mineralizing from the residue in the ground covers. The occurrence of perennial ground covers in August decreased compared to April and June. Amount of residue in mowed Agropyron tsukusinense and Panicum virgatum satisfied nutrient demand (N; 20 kg/10a, $P_2O_5$; 11 kg/10a, and $K_2O$; 19 kg/10a) to achieve the annual growth of twenty-year old fruit tree.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effects of aerial application by unmanned helicopter (AAUH) on controlling weeds under water-seeded rice cultivation. Foliar herbicide (bentazone sodium + fenoxaprop-P-ethyl) was applied with diluted 8-times (standard concentration pest control) as AAUH. Foliar herbicide treatment with standard and two times amount were little damage, but with more than three times amount showed great damage in rice growth. Six annual and two perennial weeds were major weeds occurred in the experimental paddy field. On foliar herbicide treatment 25 days after direct seeding, AAUH showed high control values against weeds (96.3% for annual weeds and 99.8% for perennial weeds). There was no significant difference in weed control values between AAUH and conventional application. There was no spray injury against rice plants with aerial application. In the experiment for good spray timing (15, 20 and 25 days after direct seeding) 15 days showed highest weed control values with 98.5% to annual weeds and 99.8% to perennial weeds and no spray injury.

  • Karl Foerster had the most significant influence on the establishment of the German garden culture. From the viewpoint of planting design, in particular, he greatly contributed to the selection of new materials and the distribution of gardens. Therefore it is worth re-exploring his garden in that he triggered the use of natural planting that is widely used these days and already used ornamental grasses in his garden designs. This study aimed to review Foerster's garden to understand his planting design methods and their historical significance. The results suggest: Firstly, in spatial structure he designed sunken gardens influenced by the climate and triggered the use of natural planting by applying naturally open meadow, ferns and grasses. Secondly, in terms of the use of materials, he pointed out the necessity to use perennial plants. He bred perennial plants that the general public could easily grow and that were resistant against cold and created show gardens to demonstrate the characteristics of the plants and possible combination methods to the public. Thirdly, in terms of the aesthetical principles of his planting design, he focuses on colors and seasons and was interested in blue, yellow and white colors. In doing so, he developed new varieties such as Delphinium, Rudbeckia and Phlox. He emphasized the necessity of seven seasons, which served as the ancestor of contemporary winter gardens.

  • The study was performed to investigate the effect of incorporation of green manures (GM) into a sandy loam soil for organic vegetable production in the condition of plastic film house, relating to growth and yield of tomato crop. Three species of GM as perennial ryegrass, sudangrass and soybean are cultivated during the rest time of summer season and incorporated into soil just after the harvest. Thereafter tomato crop was transplanted as the following crop to soil incorporated GM. Among GM, soybean was proper as GM crop for organic farming, due to the effect of yield increase by continuous supply of nitrogen on following the tomato crop. Yield of tomato crop after soybean incorporation into soil was $4.2Mg\;ha^{-1}$ similar to $4.4Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of N-P-K standard fertilization (conventional) treatment. But perennial ryegrass and sudangrass were improper, because the biomass yield of perennial ryegrass was very low due to growth retardation by high temperature during summer season and soil incorporation of sudangrass as GM results in yield decrease of following the tomato crop caused by high C/N ratio of sudangrass itself. In conclusioa soybean incorporation into soil had advantage of producing conventional level on following the tomato yield and therefore it could recommend as GM for organic vegetable production.

  • A series of studies was conducted during 2 years to investigate the effect of transplanting time and turfgrass species on turf establishment rate of sod for 2002 World Cup Soccer ground construction. The required period of rooting and turf growth for acceptable soccer playing quality on transplanted sod from nursery was tested to collect data for the project authorities of hosting cities and construction companies who were involved in World Cup stadium project. Transplanting time significantly affects on rooting-potential of sod on cool season grass and zoysiagrass, but those effects differently showed by turfgrass species. The enough nursing period for the ground established by Zousiagrass should be secured with proper transplanting time. And the thermal insulation on the turf canopy with other maintenance during Winter should improve the early rooting on zoysiagrass. The sod contained Kentucky bluegrass (85%+15% perennial ryegrass, seed wt. basis) showed relatively slow at the early growth and rooting-potential of root, but the potential resulted higher than that of perennial ryegrass turf (85%+15% Kentucky) under longer nursing period. Kentucky bluegrass has one of the most strong resistance against environmental stresses, but intensive maintenance practise should be required when the turf transplanted during summer season. Higher mixture rate of perennial ryegrass sod has a rapid root growth compare with other turfgrass species. The rate provided a benefit to an early establishment of turf ground followed by a proper maintenance practise. For the completion of World Cup soccer ground construction for 2002, the most suitable time for sod transplanting in 2001 was March to May or mid Sept. to early Oct. by delayed architect construction schedule.

  • This research was designed to develop the rapid propagation technology of zoysiagrass using carpet production and to provide turf-growing farmers with efficient cultivation methods thor carpet production. Turfgrass cultivar tested in cadet production by seeding was Z. japonica cv. Zenith. Since the surface coverage rate reached to 85% in 2 months after seeding at the rate 6g/$m^2$ in the early part of July, carpet production using ‘Zenith’seeds would be possible to produce within within the same year. Thrfgrasses tested in carpet production by vegetative propagation were Z. japonica, medium type Z. matrella, fine type Z. matrella, and medium type Z. japonica. Planting rates of vegetative parts (sprigs) were 1.2L/$m^2$, 2.4L/$m^2$, 2.5L/$m^2$, and 5L/$m^2$. Two different sizes of sprig were used; 1~2 nodes and 3~4 nodes. Surface coverage rate was 90% in one year after planting at the rate of 2.5L sprigs of medium type Z. japonica. Therefore, the use of sprigs with 3~4 nodes at the planting rate of 2.5L would be suitable for the carpet prodcution. Three months old zoysiagrass carpet (Zenith) was overseeded with Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue at two different overseeding rate. Surface coverage rate was the highest (80%) at the plot overseeded with perennial ryegrass that showed the earliest germination. Suitable overseeding species for the rapid sod formation at the early stage of establishment were tall fescue and perennial ryegrass and desirable overseeding time was from early to middle of September.

  • This study was carried out to examine the growth performance of 4 species of cool-season grasses and 4 species of zoysiagrasses under salt injury in Seo-san reclaimed area. Grasses were grown on the plots with capillary water interruption layer (WCWIL) and without capillary water interruption layer (WOCWIL) soil systems. Cool-season grass and seeding-type zoysiagrass plots were seeded on 6 Jun, 2006. Vegetative zoysiagrass 'Junggi' was established by sprigging and 'Senock' and 'Millock' were plugged. Electric conductivities of irrigation water (ECw) ranged from 0.28 to $3.3\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Electric conductivities (ECe) of the soil with capillary water interruption layer and without capillary water interruption layer ranged from 0.55 to $9.4\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and from 1.84 to $9.4\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ respectively. Leaf color, turf quality, coverage rates, and growth rates were rated visually for 2 years. Zoysiagrass 'Junggi', creeping bentgrass, zoysiagrass 'Senock' and 'Millock' showed acceptable growth at salty fairway condition, while Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass mixed with perennial ryegrass, and seeded zoysiagrass 'Zenith' showed establishment rates below 70%. These results will be useful when choosing turf grass species and cultivars for the golf courses in reclaimed land area.

  • The Rural Development Administration of Korea conducted a series of surveys of paddy weeds from 1971 to 2013 in approximately 10-year cycles and the results have been used for the efficient weed management of paddy fields. In 1971, annual weeds such as Rotala indica, Eleocharis acicularis f. longiseta, and Monochoria vaginalis were dominant. In 1981, the population of Echinochloa species decreased whereas broadleaf weeds such as M. vaginalis, Sagittaria pygmaea, and S. trifolia were dominant. In 1991, perennial weeds such as Eleocharis kuroguwai, S. pygmaea, and S. trifolia were dominant over annual weeds. In 2000, M. vaginalis was the most abundant species, followed by E. kuroguwai, Echinochloa species, and S. trifolia. In 2013, herbicide-resistant Echinochloa species and M. vaginalis were most dominant, followed by E. kuroguwai, Scirpus juncoides, and S. trifolia. It has been predicted that the prevalence of Echinochloa species will continue to increase and that perennial weeds will be more abundant than annual ones in the near future. The occurrence of herbicide-resistant weeds and exotic weeds will also increase due to global warming and changes in agricultural patterns.

  • A study was carried out to investigate the nutritive value and utilization of hybrid sorghum and perennial grass species viz. setaria (Setaria anceps) and hybrid napier when intercropped with soybean by growing Jersey crossbred heifers. Fifteen growing crossbred heifers (Jersey${\times}$Red Sindhi) of between 7-10 months age and pre-trial average body weight of 49-50 kg were divided on the basis of weight in to three treatment groups viz. $T_1$-hybrid sorghum+soybean, $T_2$-setaria+soybean and $T_3$-hybrid napier+soybean in a completely randomized block design. Intercropped forages were harvested fresh, chaffed and mixed before they were offered to the heifers. Chemical composition of the herbage, dry matter intake (DMI), body weight gain and nutrient digestibility co-efficients were estimated. The herbage mixtures had crude protein (CP) content in the range of 11.87 to 13.86% and ether extract (EE) contents were 2.91 to 3.11%, respectively. The herbage mixtures were rich in minerals (ash). The gross energy (kcal/g DM) was higher in hybrid napier+soybean, while hybrid sorghum+soybean and setaria+soybean herbage mixtures had lower value for gross energy. The hybrid sorghum+soybean and setaria+soybean herbage mixtures had higher contents of NDF, ADF, cellulose, lignin and silica as compared to that of hybrid napier+soybean herbage mixture. The heifers fed hybrid napier+soybean herbage mixture had significantly (p<0.05) higher $DMI\;g/kg\;W^{0.75}$ ($97.41{\pm}4.34$) as compared to hybrid sorghum+soybean ($88.31{\pm}2.66$) and setaria+soybean ($79.29{\pm}1.06$) herbage mixtures. Nutrients digestibility, DCP percent, DCP intake and nitrogen balance were significantly (p<0.05) higher in the heifers fed on hybrid napier+soybean herbage mixture. There was a significant (p<0.05) difference among different herbage mixtures in TDN. The heifers on setaria+soybean herbage mixture had lower average body weight gain (g/day) than those on hybrid sorghum+soybean and hybrid napier+soybean herbage mixtures. Data obtained in this experiment demonstrated that herbage mixture of hybrid napier+soybean was better than hybrid sorghum+soybean and setaria+soybean herbage mixtures in the nutrition of growing heifers. It had highest nutritive value, better digestibility co-efficients which showed better growth rate and higher feed efficiency. In ranking, hybrid napier+soybean herbage mixture was better followed by hybrid sorghum+soybean and setaria+soybean in nutritive value in the parameters studied. For future wasteland development program in humid-sub tropics of Himachal Pradesh hybrid napier and its intercropping with soybean is recommended for general adoption because of its better adaptability and higher nutritive value.
