Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the nurses' perception of the importance of evaluating continuing nursing education programs. Methods: Subjects were 465 nurses enrolled in continuing nursing education programs at five university hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Data were collected from September 20, 2011 to October 13, 2011. The instrument was developed by the author through a literature review. Content validity was established from a panel of six experts. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The purpose of the program was rated as the most important domain by the subjects. Interestingly, 'program outcome' and 'effectiveness of program' were ranked below the mean (M=$3.64{\pm}0.75$). These two domains were influenced by the district of work and the type of institution. The position of the participants at their institutions made the significant differences on their perception of 'program purpose.' Conclusion: The results of this study might aid us to have better understanding for what nurses perceive the importance of evaluating continuing nursing education programs. This information might be able to be used for improving programs. Further studies are needed to explore the validity of the instruments to evaluate continuing nursing education programs.
The purpose of this study was to analyze task performance and importance level of the dietitian who is working in the public health nutrition area. Work oriented job analysis methodology was employed for the study purpose. Subjects of 38 dietitians currently working at health centers in 2002 were recruited. Based on the focus group interview with 7 public health nutritionists and 7 professors, information about task elements was collected. Questionnaires measuring work performance and self-perception of importance of the selected task elements were administered. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1) The tasks with high performance and importance level among 20 tasks are developing nutrition education material (B1), nutrition services for adults and the elderly (C3), writing the proposal for nutrition services (A2), evaluating service effect (A4), improving professionalism (E1), and self management (E2). 2) The task elements with high performance and importance level among weekly task elements are nutrition education for diabetes (C56), nutrition counseling for adults (C47), nutrition for hypertension (C53), managing and keeping records (C80), nutrition education for kindergarten and nursery school children (C42), searching for nutrition education materials (B26), and searching for media (B27). 3) The number of task elements with high performance and importance level among monthly task elements are 13 in the planning and evaluation of public health nutrition service, and 5 in developing nutrition education materials. The tasks of a dietitian in the public health center show a very wide spectrum. However dietitians recognize most of the tasks are important even though they cannot perform those tasks adequately.
Purpose: This study compared the importance and performance of rehabilitation nursing needs perceived by stroke patients and nurses. Methods: A total of 275 subjects were divided into two groups. One group was 136 stroke patients and the other was 139 nurses. Data were collected with the Rehabilitation Nursing Service Inventory. The data were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The degree of importance and performance in rehabilitation nursing needs perceived by the stroke patients were $3.69{\pm}0.47$ and $3.48{\pm}0.50$, respectively, showing a significant difference (t=21.04, p<.001). The degree of importance and performance perceived by nurses were $3.84{\pm}0.42$ and $3.60{\pm}0.45$, respectively, showing a significant difference (t=26.53, p<.001). A significant difference in the degree of importance and performance in rehabilitation nursing needs was also observed between stroke patients and nurses (t=-2.78, p=.006; t=-2.12, p=.035). Conclusion: These findings showed that there was a perception gap between stroke patients and nurses. Therefore, it will necessary to identify methods for reducing this perception gap and developing rehabilitation nursing intervention considering the rehabilitation nursing needs of stroke patients.
Background: Engaging and Involving stakeholders who have different interests in changing health care policies are difficult task. As the literature on the governance in Korean health care field is rare, this study aims to provide empirical evidence of 'governing health policy'-the ways health care policy is made, implemented, and evaluated from a political perspective. Methods: The authors of this study conducted interviews with elites in policy and clinical areas, which was considered to be the most effective approach to gather in-depth information about the background of changing payment policy as well as the barriers or contributors for making the policy sustainable. A total of 14 experts (3 government officials, 2 representatives from medical profession, 3 professors form academic field, and 6 healthcare providers from New DRG pilot program hospitals) participated in 2 hour long interviews. Results: There was a perception gap of the feasibility and substantiality of new payment system among elites. The score was higher in government officers than those in scholars or clinical experts. Next, the interviewees indicated that Korean New DRG might not sustain without significant efforts to improving democratic aspects of the governance. It is also notable that all interviewees except healthcare providers provided negative expectation of the contribution of new payment system to increase administration efficiency. For clinical efficiency, every stakeholders perceived there was no increased efficiency after introduction of New DRG payment. Like general perception, there was a wide gap between the perception of stakeholders in quality change after implementing the new payment system. Finally, interview participants negatively assumed about the likelihood of New DRG to remain a case of successful reforms. Conclusion: This study implied the importance of social consensus and the governance of health policy.
The purpose of this study was to examine the customer’s perception of the importance of restaurant quality by using a developed SERVQUAL model. In particular, it was intended to provide the basic information for nutrition education for family’s eating out. the data were collected through the survey over 440 families who have lived around the apartments in Kyongju and Seoul. The structure questionnaire included 35 items evaluating the quality of restaurants, adapting SERVQUAL model and adding other factors related to restaurant and the general characteristics of the families. The data were analyzed using SPSS 10.0 WIN program for descriptive analysis, a chi-square test and Pearson’s correlation test. The major results were as follows: From the factor analysis, the 35 items related to the quality of restaurant have been categorized into 10 factors, ie., ‘Health’, ‘Reliability’, ‘Employee’, ‘Food’, ‘Facilities’, ‘Product’, ‘Empathy’, ‘Access’, ‘Comfort’, and ‘Safety’. From the analysis of the correlation between family life cycle of four steps and 10 factors, four factors such as ‘Health’, ‘Facilities’ (p<0.001), ‘Comfort’ (p<0.01) and ‘Product’ (p<0.05) showed statistical significance. ‘Health’ and ‘Product’ factors marked the highest score in the family with senior couple live without children or single, but the lowest score in the family with young couple without children or single. ‘Facilities’ and ‘Comfort’ factors showed the highest scores in the family with under elementary school children, and the lowest scores in the family with over elementary school children.

Background: The understanding of the relationship between risk perception, knowledge, and protective behaviors could play a major role in occupational risk control and management. Research exploring how workers perceive, recognize, and react to risks in different occupational settings is scarce in Thailand. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of noise-related risk perceptions and knowledge to the use of hearing protective devices (HPDs) among sawmill workers in Thailand. Methods: Sawmill workers (n = 540) from four factories in Trang, Southern Thailand, participated in a questionnaire interview from December 2015 to January 2016. Descriptive statistics and linear regression models were used to explore the risk factors related to HPD use. Path diagram analysis was demonstrated and used to evaluate associations. Results: Risk perception was significantly correlated with HPD use (p < 0.01), HPD training (p = 0.01), and the number of years of work experience (p = 0.03). Sawmill workers were likely to use HPDs based on their risk perception and HPD training. However, HPD training was inversely correlated with age and the number of years of work experience. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of risk perceptions and knowledge, and these factors should be emphasized in the design and implementation of any personal safety intervention program for sawmill workers.
Nowadays, people are more concerned about health food than satisfying their hunger. Therefore, media presents programs related to health food such as dietary food, traditional food, and herbal items. The trend has emphasized the importance of traditional food items and the need for a 'han-bang' menu development The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of herbal items and other food items used in medicinal cuisine in the Seoul Area. Out of 300 questionnaires distributed, 287 were collected and analyzed. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis, ANOVA, and T-test were conducted using SPSS 12.0 for windows. This study identified that the perception of herbal items was influenced by age, education, and wage level. Daily eating habits partially affected on the perception of herbal items. Accordingly, these findings indicate that it is necessary for 'han-bang' menu' development set to target market.
Purpose: This study aims to determine obstetric and gynecologic (OBGY) nurses' perception and performance propecting patients' privacy, and to contribute to develop educational program and improve the quality of nursing care. Methods: 206 OBGY nurses in 6 hospitals using an electronic medical record or an order communicating system were chosen by convenience sampling and agreed to participate in the study. The questionnaire, explored 4 domains of privacy: direct nursing, linked business, patient information management, communication with relatives. Results: Perception and performance of protecting patient privacy averaged 4.29 (of 5) and 3.55 (of 5), respectively. Most nurses (94.2%) recognized the importance of protecting patient privacy, 80.1% received patient privacy education. There was a distinct difference between the perception and performance of protecting patient privacy of nurses. Performance of protecting patient privacy had a positive correlation with perception. Conclusion: Proper performance of protecting privacy protection requires improving perception of each nurse on the patient privacy, and various efforts should be made to minimize the affect from external factors such as hospital environment. It is needed to educate nurses for patient privacy. It is also needed for medical organizations to improve their policies and facilities to ease the performance for privacy protection.
To examine the gap between physician's perceived importance and performance of care and to identify factors associated with the gap. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted with 91 physicians working in a University hospital in Seoul. The respondents were asked about their perceived importance and actual performance of interpersonal care on a 5-point Likert-type scale, indicating a higher score as higher importance and performance. Interpersonal care was measured by questions modified from the Korean Standard Service Quality Index, which are grouped into 6 categories: basic services, extra services, reliability, courtesy, convenience, and tangibles. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to find out physician characteristics associated with the gap. All of the 6 interpersonal care categories showed lower performance than perceived importance. The respondents tended to have a worse performance than perceived importance as the number of patients per outpatient care session ($\beta$=-0.0204, p<0.05) and the need for customer satisfaction education increase ($\beta$=-0.2226, p<0.05). Female physicians ($\beta$=0.2336, p<0.05) and those with higher job satisfaction($\beta$=0.0096, p<0.05) showed a better performance than perception. Overall, it appears that lower quality of interpersonal care was delivered to patients than the desired level considered by the responding physicians. Based on the regression analysis results, it is suggested that reducing patient volume per session, fulfilling education need for customer satisfaction, and improving job satisfaction may contribute to reduce the gap between physician's perceived importance and performance of interpersonal care.
The increasing elderly population has created an urgent need for well-managed convalescent hospitals, which should provide appropriate clinical nutrition services. The new accreditation policy requiring participation of all convalescent hospitals since 2013 may promote improvement of clinical nutrition services. This study examined whether or not the accreditation policy has increased practice level and dietitians' perception of the importance of clinical nutrition management. Of the 177 convalescent hospitals accredited by January 30, 2014, dietitians from 73 hospitals (41.2%) completed the survey questionnaire. The pre-tested questionnaire surveyed general characteristics of the hospital and dietitians, current status of clinical nutrition management, and changes in the perception and practice levels of various aspects of food and clinical nutrition management. In average, dietitians with more than 5 years of work experience (68.1%) provided food and clinical nutrition services (71.2%). After accreditation, dietitians' perception of the importance and practice level of clinical nutrition service increased (P<0.001). Level of perception, however, was significantly (P<0.001) higher than practice level before and after accreditation. During perception and practice level of initial nutrition assessment, a compulsory accreditation item, notably and significantly (P<0.001) improved after accreditation. The significant difference between perception and practice level disappeared after accreditation. In conclusion, the accreditation process had positive effects on clinical nutrition management in terms of dietitians' perception and practice levels. Making more accreditation items compulsory and providing motivation and professional education to dietitians in convalescent hospitals could lead to additional improvements.
