Methodology to evaluate the effective doses to adults undergoing various diagnostic x-ray examinations were established by Monte Carlo simulation of the x-ray examinations. Anthropomorphic mathematical phantoms, the MIRD5 male phantom and the ORNL female phantom, were used as the target body and x-ray spectra were produced by the x-ray spectrum generation code SPEC78. The computational procedure was validated by comparing the resulting doses to the results of NRPB studies for the same diagnostic procedures. The effective doses as well as the organ doses due to chest, abdomen, head and spine examinations were calculated for x-rays incident from AP, PA, LLAT and RLAT directions. For instance, the effective doses from the most common procedures, chest PA and abdomen AP, were 0.029 mSv and 0.44 mSv, respectively. The fact that the effective dose from PA chest x-ray is far lower than the traditional value of 0.3 mSv(or 30 mrem), which results partly from the advances of technology in diagnostic radiology and partly from the differences in the dose concept employed, emphasizes necessities of intensive assessment of the patient doses in wide ranges of medical exposures. The methodology and tools established in this study can easily be applied to dose assessments for other radiology procedures; dose from CT examinations, dose to the fetus due to examinations of pregnant women, dose from pediatric radiology.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare changes in pediatric Cobb's angle resulting from using the modified scoliosis exercise method to promote proprioception. Methods: There were 32 participants in this study. Cobb's angle was measured automatically using a ZeTTA PACS Viewer through a digital computer program with whole-body x-ray anterior to posterior. Scoliosis was diagnosed by a Cobb's angle of 10° or higher. Modified scoliosis exercises were used as the program for the three-stage method used in the study: the preparation phase (warm-up), actual exercise phase (main exercise), and final clean-up phase (cool-down). In this study, exercises that can promote proprioception, including muscle strengthening, stretching, equilibrium, myofascial release, balance taping, and traction, were applied, and their effects before and after treatment were compared. After implementing the exercise methods once a week-15 times total for about 4 months-the changes in Cobb's angle were measured. Results: After having the pediatric scoliosis patients practice the modified scoliosis exercises for four months, it was found that the Cobb's angle of the spine significantly decreased. Conclusion: The results of this study show that the modified pediatric scoliosis exercise, which is capable of promoting proprioception, is also effective in improving Cobb's angle.

Molar-incisor malformation (MIM) is a new type of root anomaly reported recently. The characteristics of MIM are dysplastic root formations, constriction of pulp chambers and presence of calcified matrices at the level of cementoenamel junction in permanent first molars and primary second molars. In some cases, permanent maxillary incisors are also affected. The permanent first molars of the patient in this case report were affected with MIM. Generalized pulp stones were observed in overall primary dentition. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging and scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer analysis were performed on the extracted mandibular first molar and maxillary primary second molar of the patient. Micro-CT images revealed the discontinuity of enamel directly connected to an accessory canal of the root.
Purpose: The gonad shielding is used to minimize the impact of the exposure to gonads when Abdomen, Pevis and Hip X-ray inspections are conducted on radiation impressionable pediatric patients. By the way, the gonad is palpable difficult and impossible to check visually because it's a sensitive area, so tests are conducted with the approximate location of shielding, thereby appearing problems of not shielding gonads accurately. Accordingly, this study produced shields by age and gender of pediatric patients and studied the method of positioning shields with ASIS as a reference point without palpable sensitive areas, and tried to evaluate its usability. Materials and methods: The study surveyed 30 pediatric patients by gender and age, who came and got inspected in Department of Radiology, our hospital from February 2012 to January 2014 and obtained the value of tolerance by measuring the average size of the pelvis using the distance measurement function of Infinitt Piview with the images stored in the PACS and producing shields by age and gender of pediatric patients and specifying the areas at random for the comparative analysis of pre- and post-using. It calculated the technology statistics($mean{\pm}SD$) with the value of tolerance measured the length using SPSS 12.0 statistical program. Results: As for boys, differences in the tolerance range of pre- and post-using shields were 2.69 mm in case of 1 year old, 2.58 mm in 2 years, 2.37 mm in 3 years, 2.815 mm in 4~5 years, 2.043 mm in 7~10 years, and as for girls, 1.92 mm in 1~2 years, 1.75 mm in 3~4 years, 2.52 mm in 5~6 years and 1.93 mm in 7~10. After analyzing the pre- and post-using shields for all of boys and girls, there were statistically significant differences(P<0.050). Conclusions: It is considered that we can minimize the exposure to gonads and get a better video for diagnosis in testing high biological impressionable pediatric, if we use shields correctly with ASIS as a reference point considering its shape and size by age and gender in Abdomen, Pevis and Hip X-ray inspections.
The onset of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in the postoperative course of esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula is rarely reported. The diagnosis could be delayed due to its mimicking symptoms of other postoperative complications including gastroesophageal reflux or anastomotic stricture. We present an infant who had surgery for esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula. He had never fed since birth. The infant presented with an increased amount of orogastric tube drainage and consistently distended gastric air on simple abdominal X-ray. Abdominal ultrasonography showed hypertrophic thick pyloric muscle. The diagnosis of pyloric stenosis was confirmed d is rarely reported. The diagnosis could be delayed due to its mimicking symptoms of other postoperative complications including gastroesophageal reflux or anastomotic stricture. We present an infant who had surgery for esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula. He had never fed. The infant presented with uring surgery, After pyloromyotomy, the patient's condition improved.
Object: We evaluated the efficacy of chest physical therapy in pediatric patients with pneumonia. Method: Retrospective study was performed in 89 pneumonia patients admitted to pediatric unit. The subjects were divided into two groups: control group; treatment group. Control group included 42 patients who didn't receive chest physical therapy. Treatment group included 47 patients who received chest physical therapy. The chest physcial therapy employed were postural drainage, chest percussion, deep breathing training and enhancement of coughings. The efficacy was evaluated by x-ray outcome before discharge. Results: There were no significant difference in age, sex, type of pneumonia, and symptom duration between two groups. However the duration of fever after admission, duration of antibiotic use and hospital stay were longer in treatment group. In treatment group, longer the day to initiate chest physical therapy, longer the hospital stay. The final outcome was not different between groups. Conclusion: The results suggest that the referred patients for chest physical therapy tends to be of severe cases. Nevertheless, the result that the outcome was not different in two groups means that the chest physical therapy could be used as a effective treatment method in pediatric patient with pneumonia.

Purpose: This study was performed for analysis of the results of polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and antibody test of Mycoplasma pneumoniae(M. pneumoniae) in children with symptoms of respiratory tract infection. In the cases of both positive antibody test and PCR for M. pneumoniae, the chest X-ray findings were assessed. Methods: The antibody test was done in 1,979 cases who have been admitted to Wonkwang university hospital department of pediatrics with symptoms of respiratory tract infection from January, 2000 to December, 2001. The positive antibody test was defined as titer of 1 : 80 and over 1 : 80. The PCR of M. pneumoniae were done in randomly selected 131 cases of respiratory tract infection. The chest X-ray findings were assessed in the cases of positive antibody test and PCR. Results: The numbers of cases of the positive antibody test for M. pneumoniae were 499 cases(25%). The PCR for M. pneumoniae were performed in 131 cases and the 45 cases(34%) were positive and 86 cases(66%) were negative. The 56 of 86 PCR negative cases were also negative antibody test, but 30 cases were positive antibody test. The 36 cases of 45 PCR positive cases were antibody positive, and 9 cases were antibody negative. The sputum Gram stain and culture for M. pneumoniae were negative in all the 499 cases of mycoplasma antibody positive respiratory infection. In these antibody positive 499 cases, the most common X-ray findings was interstitial pneumonic infiltration in 266 cases(53%), and pleural effusion were detected in 22 cases(4%), but nonspecific chest X-ray finding showed in 129 cases(26%). In PCR positive 45 cases, the most common chest X-ray finding was interstitial pneumonic infiltration in 32 cases(71%). Conclusion: The PCR for M. pneumoniae is more useful method for detection of mycoplasma infection in children with respiratory tract infection. The M. pneumoniae is a important etiologic agent for respiratory infection in children.

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the microstructural properties and mineralization quality of mesiodens with permanent and primary central incisors. Fifteen mesiodens, permanent and primary central incisors were collected. The enamel rod diameter and enamel thickness were observed and measured using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Chemical composition of the enamel was analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The measurements were then assessed using the one-way ANOVA and Tukey test. There was no statistically significant difference in the enamel rod diameter between mesiodens and permanent central incisors. However, enamel rods of primary central incisors were smaller than remaining two groups. The thickness of enamel was thick in order of permanent central incisors, mesiodens, primary central incisors. In the composition analysis using EDS, there was no difference in the Ca/P ratio and Ca/C ratio between mesiodens and permanent central incisors, but small in primary central incisors. In conclusion, the microstructural properties of mesiodens were more similar to those of permanent central incisors compared to primary central incisors. Futher, the mineralization quality of mesiodens did not differ significantly from that of permanent central incisors.
Purpose: Children with celiac disease (CD) are at an increased risk of low bone mineral density (BMD) owing to malabsorption of fat-soluble vitamins, inflammation, and malnutrition. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for low BMD in Iranian children with CD. Methods: This prospective cohort study examined 149 Iranian children with CD between 2011 and 2018 at Zabol University of Medical Sciences. BMD was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected from patients' medical records. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with low areal BMD (BMD-Z <-2) in the lumbar spine and femoral neck. Descriptive data were analyzed using the mean, standard deviation, and relative frequency. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test, t-test, and analysis of variance. Results: Of the 149 children with CD, 27.5% had osteoporosis. The mean body mass index (BMI) Z score was -1.28±1.2. Lower BMI was associated with a higher likelihood of BMD-Z (odds ratio 2.17; p≤0.05). Conclusion: Overall, the findings of this study showed that there was no correlation among Marsh classification, presence of specific human leukocyte antigens, and low BMD in Iranian children with CD. BMI can be a predictor of bone density in children with CD and may be applied clinically in early screenings to evaluate the bone health status in these children.
