A new algorithm for determining noise level is proposed for more reliability in interpreting spectral data for complex Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectra of petroleum. In the new algorithm, a moving window with a fixed number of data points was adopted, instead of a fixed m/z width. In the analysis of petroleum, it was found that a moving window of 50,000 or more data points was optimal. This optimized automated peak picking performed well even with frequency-dependant noise in the mass spectrum. Additionally, this fast, automated peak picking algorithm was suitable for the analysis of a large set of samples.

An estimation method for the characteristic parameters in the low frequency signal is proposed in this paper. A low frequency signal is assumed to be modulated or distorted by high frequency terms. The algorithm proposed in this paper is designed to select set of local maximums in a successive manner, hence it is denoted as the iterative peak picking(IPP) algorithm. The IPP algorithm is operating in the time domain and is using only the comparison operation between two neighboring samples. Therefore, its computational complexity is very low and the delay caused by the computation is negligible, which make the real-time operation possible with economic hardware. The proposed algorithm is verified on the pitch estimation of speech signal and blood pulse estimation.
With consideration of the first arrival picking methodology and inherent errors in picking process, I propose, from the computerization point of view, a practical algorithm for picking and error computation. The proposed picking procedure consists of 2-step; 1) picking the first coherent peak or trough events, 2) derive a line which approximates the record in the interval prior to the pick, and set the intercept time of the line as the first break. The length of fitting interval used in experiment, is few samples less than 1/4 width of the arriving wavelet. A quantitative measure of the error involved in first arrival picking is defined as the time length that needed to determine if an event is the first arrival or not. The time length is expressed as a function of frequency bandwidth of the signal and the S/N ratio. For 3 sets of cross-well seismic data, first breaks are picked twice, by manually, and by the proposed method. And at the same time, the error bound for each trace is computed. Experiment results show that good performance of the proposed picking method, and the usefulness of the quantitative error measure in pick-quality evaluation.

In this paper, a cochlea-inspired artificial filter bank(CAFB) was developed in order to efficiently acquire dynamic response of structure, and it was also evaluated via dynamic response experiments. To sort out signals containing significant modal information from all the dynamic responses of structure, it was made to adopt a band-pass filter optimizing algorithm(BOA) and a peak-picking algorithm (PPA). Optimally designed on the basis of El-centro and Kobe earthquake signals, it was then embedded into the wireless multi-measurement system(WiMMS). In order to evaluate the performance of the developed CAFB, a vibration test was conducted using the El-centro and Kobe earthquake signals, and structural responses of a two-span bridge were obtained and analyzed simultaneously by both a wired measurement system and a CAFB-based WiMMS. The test results showed that the compressed dynamic responses acquired by the CAFB-based WiMMS matched with those of the wired system, and they included significant modal information of the two-span bridge. Therefore this study showed that the developed CAFB could be used as a new, economic, and efficient measurement device for wireless sensor networks(WSNs) based real time structural health monitoring because it could reconstruct the whole dynamic response using the compressed dynamic response with significant modal information.

AN EMBEDDED PC-BASED HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO AUTOMATE THE DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS OF BRAKE SQUEAL. THE DEVELOPED SYSTEM INTEGRATES ADVANCED SIGNAL CONDITIONING HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TO ACQUIRE BRAKE NOISE AND VIBRATION DATA RAPIDLY, CONSISTENTLY AND OBJECTIVELY. A SPECIAL PEAK-PICKING ALGORITHM IS USED TO DETERMINE WHEN BRAKE NOISE OCCURS DURING A STOP EVENT AND ACTUALLY DEFINE FROM WHICH CORNER OF THE VEHICLE IT ORIGINATES. A SPECIAL NOISE-RATING TABLE IS FEATURED TO ENABLE THE USER TO DEVELOP CORRELATIONS BETWEEN DRIVER RATINGS AND OBJECTIVE MEASUREMENTS.

This study describes a new method to analyze phonocardiogram acquired from electronic stethoscope. The method uses the formant frequencies of linear prediction spectrum of the phonocardiogram and proposes a novel method for formant detection using the smoothing and the first and second derivatives. For this, stethoscope sounds are acquired in university hospital. The stethoscope signals are preprocessed and analyzed by the Burg algorithm, a kind of linear prediction analysis. Based on the linear prediction spectra, the formant frequencies are estimated. The proposed method has shown better performance in formant frequency detection than the conventional peak picking method.
In the conventional velocity analysis, the peaks of a semblance panel are picked and the stacking velocities of the peaks are assumed as RMS velocities from which interval velocities are determined. This velocity analysis technique is correct only for horizontal homogeneous layes and incurs error in a layer whose velocity varies laterally. Tediousness of peak picking and error in velocity analysis can be reduced by automatic velocity analysis techniques. An automatic velocity analysis algorithm has been presented in order to improve these problems by considering the stacking velocity from the view point of interval velocity model and by relating the stacking velocity and the interval velocity with the traveltimes. In this paper, we apply the automatic velocity analysis method to simple models having lateral velocity anomaly to verify the effectivenesses and limits of this method. From the results of numerical experiments, we can determine the interval velocites without pickings of the stacking velocities in the one-dimensional velocity analysis and the general patterns of the laterally varying interval velocities appear in the two-dimensional case. However, the interval velocity and the depth of velocity anomaly determined by two-dimensional automatic velocity analysis are somewaht discrepant in those of the theoretical model.

This paper, presents a comparison between numerical analysis and field test on a real offshore platform in Bohai Bay, China. This platform is a steel jacket offshore platform with vertical piles. The field testing under wave-induced force and wind force etc. was conducted, in order to obtain the dynamic parameters of the structure, including the frequencies of the jacket platform, as well as the corresponding damping ratios and mode shapes. The natural excitation technology (NexT) combined with eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) and the peak picking (PP) method in frequency domain are carried out for modal parameter indentification under operational conditions. The three-dimeansional finite element model (FEM) is constructed by ANSYS and analytical modal analysis is performed to generate modal parameters. The analytical results were compared with experimental results. A good agreement was achieved between the finite element and analysis and field test results. It is further demonstrated that the numerical and experimental modal analysis provide a comprehensive study on the dynamic properties of the jacket platform. According to the analysis results, the modal parameters identification under ambient excitation can calibrate finite element model of the jacket platform structures, or can be used for the structural health monitoring system.

This study aims to optimize the cochlea-inspired artificial filter bank (CAFB) using El-Centro seismic waveforms and test its performance through a shaking table test on a two-span bridge model. In the process of optimizing the CAFB, El-Centro seismic waveforms were used for the purpose of evaluating how they would affect the optimizing process. Next, the optimized CAFB was embedded in the developed wireless-based intelligent data acquisition (IDAQ) system to enable response measurement in real-time. For its performance evaluation to obtain a seismic response in real-time using the optimized CAFB, a two-span bridge (model structures) was installed in a large shaking table, and a seismic response experiment was carried out on it with El-Centro seismic waveforms. The CAFB optimized in this experiment was able to obtain the seismic response in real-time by compressing it using the embedded wireless-based IDAQ system while the obtained compressed signals were compared with the original signal (un-compressed signal). The results of the experiment showed that the compressed signals were superior to the raw signal in response performance, as well as in data compression effect. They also proved that the CAFB was able to compress response signals effectively in real-time even under seismic conditions. Therefore, this paper established that the CAFB optimized by being embedded in the wireless-based IDAQ system was an economical and efficient data compression sensing technology for measuring and monitoring the seismic response in real-time from structures based on the wireless sensor networks (WSNs).

This study developed a band-pass filter based artificial filter bank(BAFB) based on that in order to efficiently obtain the significant dynamic responses. The BAFB was then optimized about the El-centro earthquake wave which was often used in the construction research, and the software implementation of BAFB was finally embedded in the wireless unified management system(WiUMS). For the evaluation of the developed BAFB, a real time dynamic response experiment was performed on a cable-stayed bridge model, and the response of the cable-stayed bridge model was measured using both the traditional wired system and the developed BAFB-based WiUMS. The experiment results showed that the compressed dynamic response acquired by the BAFB-based WiUMS matched significantly with that of the traditional wired system while still carrying sufficient modal information of the cable-stayed bridge. Finally, the developed BAFB was able to reconstruct or re-sample the dynamic response wholly from the compressed response signal, and it can be applied as a new kind of measurement system for a wireless sensor networks based structural health monitoring system that secures both economy and efficiency.
