  • An improved genetic algorithm was proposed for pattern synthesis of an adaptive beam forming system using phased array antennas. The proposed genetic algorithm is an algorithm that adds acquired characteristics procedure to solve local optimization using the diversity. The performance of the proposed genetic algorithm is verified through the problem of finding a suitable chromosome for a picture composed of binary. And it is confirmed that it is suitable for the adaptive beam forming system based on the performance problem of combining main beam and two pattern nulls.

  • A method for the synthesis of one-dimensional nonlinear distribution function is presented for the desired inverse scattering pattern. This method is based on the inverse transform of the solution of the Riccati equation derived from one-dimensional inverse scattering problem. Since the solution is analogous to the array factor or normalized space factor in collinear array antenna, the synthesis method for field pattern is applied for the construction of the involved line-source nonlinear distribution function. The suggested method is carried out under the optimization process, and is numerically verified by synthesizing the dispersive transmission line profile within the specified frequency band and control of scattered field on resistive strip.

  • Sub-arrays of arbitrary conformal array have different geometric shape through steering direction, thus the beam patterns of sub-arrays are always non-uniform. In this paper, we apply the beam pattern synthesis method using convex optimization into the conformal array, and shows the improvement of uniformity of beam performance. The simulation is performed with the conformal array of cut-sphere shape. As a result, the standard deviation of 3 dB beamwidth in elevation is greatly reduced but the directivity index is also reduced. To alleviate this trade-off, we propose a convex optimization using a shading function.

  • Acarbose effectively inhibited the synthesis of dextran, and the inhibition pattern was a noncompetitive type with a $K_i$ value of 1.35 mM. It also inhibited the disproportionation reaction of dextransucrase with isomaltotriose and decreased the efficiency of the maltose acceptor reaction. Increased concentration of dextransucrase or maltose in reaction digests, however, decreased the degree of inhibition by acarbose.

  • The ultrahigh pressure process for synthesizing diamond grits is due to make a quantum leap: the raw materials will incorporate diamond seeds with a predetermined pattern. The result is doubling the diamond yield with a narrower size distribution. Moreover, the shape of diamond crystals can be precisely tuned. For example, diamond octahedra or diamond cubes, that are not available today, can be mass-produced. The new technology is now being implemented worldwide so the future diamond grits will have improved quality at reduced prices.

  • The mature cyst of Acanthamoeba is highly resistant to various antibiotics and therapeutic agents. Cyst wall of Acanthamoeba are composed of cellulose, acid-resistant proteins, lipids, and unidentified materials. Because cellulose is one of the primary components of the inner cyst wall, cellulose synthesis is essential to the process of cyst formation in Acanthamoeba. In this study, we hypothesized the key and short-step process in synthesis of cellulose from glycogen in encysting Acanthamoeba castellanii, and confirmed it by comparing the expression pattern of enzymes involving glycogenolysis and cellulose synthesis. The genes of 3 enzymes, glycogen phosphorylase, UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, and cellulose synthase, which are involved in the cellulose synthesis, were expressed high at the 1st and 2nd day of encystation. However, the phosphoglucomutase that facilitates the interconversion of glucose 1-phosphate and glucose 6-phosphate expressed low during encystation. This report identified the short-cut pathway of cellulose synthesis required for construction of the cyst wall during the encystation process in Acanthamoeba. This study provides important information to understand cyst wall formation in encysting Acanthamoeba.

  • PMMA plate with nano-sized pattern was synthesized on anodized aluminum oxide template by bluk polymerization method. Anodized aluminum oxide was used as a template to synthesize the PMMA plate with nano-sized pattern. The polymerization of MMA was performed at $75-79^{\circ}C$. It is verified from SPM results that the nano-sized pattern on synthesized PMMA plate was well transferred from that of anodized aluminum oxide template.

  • This paper proposes a method of adaptively generating a gait pattern of biped robot. The gait synthesis is based on human's gait pattern analysis. The proposed method can easily be applied to generate the natural and stable gait pattern of any biped robot. To analyze the human's gait pattern, sequential images of the human's gait on the sagittal plane are acquired from which the gait control values are extracted. The gait pattern of biped robot on the sagittal plane is adaptively generated by a genetic algorithm using the human's gait control values. However, gait trajectories of the biped robot on the sagittal plane are not enough to construct the complete gait pattern because the biped robot moves on 3-dimension space. Therefore, the gait pattern on the frontal plane, generated from Zero Moment Point (ZMP), is added to the gait one acquired on the sagittal plane. Consequently, the natural and stable walking pattern for the biped robot is obtained, as proved by the experiments.

  • In this paper, a method of representing the pattern classifier as a collection of hypercubic regions is proposed. This representation has following advantages over the conventional ones : 1) a simple form of human knowledge can be used in designing the classifier, 2) the form of the classifier is suit for the rule-based system, and 3) this can reduce the classification time. A method of synthesis of the classifier under this representation is also proposed and the experimental result shows that the proposed method is faster than the well-known nearest neighbor classifier.
