  • This study analyzed patent trends of seismic nodal systems and the technical characteristics of core patents of three major companies, including Fairfield, Sercel, and Wireless Seismic, to examine the focus of technology development of each company. From the analysis, the patent application growth rate of seismic nodal systems has steadily increased since early to mid-2000s and has recently shown a higher growth rate. Over the same period, the patent application growth rate of the three major companies examined was higher than that of the global trend, and patent infringement cases was also examined to evaluate market competition in this field. Analysis of the technical characteristics of the three companies' 33 core patents showed that they are generally focused on seismic signal detection. Sub-technologies included improved reliability of data acquisition, data transmission efficiency, and overall operating of the seismic nodal system. New entrants in field of technology development or manufacturing of seismic nodal systems where the market is growing must closely analyze the contents of major companies' products and patents to prevent possible patent disputes or duplicate research.

  • As markets and industries continue to evolve rapidly, technology opportunity discovery (TOD) has become critical to a firm's survival. From a common consensus that TOD based on a firm's capabilities is a valuable method for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and reduces the risk of failure in technology development, studies for TOD based on a firm's capabilities have been actively conducted. However, previous studies mainly focused on a firm's technological capabilities and rarely on business capabilities. Since discovered technologies can create market value when utilized in a firm's business, a firm's current business capabilities should be considered in discovering technology opportunities. In this context, this study proposes a TOD method that considers both a firm's business and technological capabilities. To this end, this study uses patent data, which represents the firm's technological capabilities, and trademark data, which represents the firm's business capabilities. The proposed method comprises four steps: 1) Constructing firm technology and business capability matrices using patent classification codes and trademark similarity group codes; 2) Transforming the capability matrices to preference matrices using the fuzzy function; 3) Identifying a target firm's candidate technology opportunities using the collaborative filtering algorithm; 4) Recommending technology opportunities using a portfolio map constructed based on technology similarity and applicability indices. A case study is conducted on a security firm to determine the validity of the proposed method. The proposed method can assist SMEs that face resource constraints in identifying technology opportunities. Further, it can be used by firms that do not possess patents since the proposed method uncovers technology opportunities based on business capabilities.

  • We analyzed the patent trends for whole drilling bits to reveal the main R&D directions, focusing on patents applied for and registered in Korea, the USA, Japan, and Europe. The technology was classified into two groups as a primary classification step (reaming systems and fixed systems), and into seven groups as a secondary classification step (sliding, odex, horizontal pivot, vertical pivot, concentric, eccentric, and etc.). A total of 33,614 patents were retrieved and 870 patents were selected for final effective analysis by data deduplication and filtering. A portfolio analysis using the correlation between the number of patents and the applicants for each patents revealed a sliding system as the key technology with greatest growth potential. From an analysis of the barriers to patents being granted, we emphasize the need to avoid similar topics existing patents or patent applications and to develop differential technology.

  • Confronted with increasing global competition and rising research and development risks, the global open innovation has receiving increased attention. This study empirically investigates whether or not international cooperative R&D is effective by evaluating the quality indicators with the patents with international co-applications. The number of patents with international co-applications has dramatically increased in recent years. According to the results, the outcome from international cooperative R&D is prominent in term of all the evaluation criteria such as the number of citation, patent families, claims, and et cetera, compared with that from domestic cooperative R&D. Based on the patent quality, the information technology sector holds the top spot and high-tech sectors such as bio and automobile industries show the better quality performances. By identifying high betweeneess centrality in the network analysis of international cooperative R&D, the US is indicated as the most central country in such cooperative activity, and then Germany, the UK, Canada, and France come after.

  • We introduce various methods to investigate the relations between innovation of technology and social changes by analyzing more than 4 millions of patents registered at United States Patent and Trademark Office(USPTO) from year 1985 to 2015. First, we review the history of patent law and its relation with the quantitative changes of registered patents. Second, we investigate the differences of technical innovations of several countries by use of cluster analysis based on the numbers of registered patents at several technical sectors. Third, we introduce the PageRank algorithm to define important nodes in network type data and apply the PageRank algorithm to find important technical sectors based on citation information between registered patents. Finally, we explain how to use the canonical correlation analysis to study relationship between technical innovation and social changes.
