  • Patent information as the innovative index for activity of industry, science and technology reflects the inventive outcome of the nation, region, technology, or company etc.. and is able to be used as a tool evaluating the R&D product and technology diffusion. In this study, the index for analysing the productivity, innovation, and activity of the technology is provided to evaluate the technology in fields of the pharmaceutic, transport, biotechnology, textile, construction, machine parts, information media, and electric/telecommunication, which are becoming the national core technology. As a result of analysis, the technology activity in fields of the construction, pharmaceutic, and biotechnology shows a growing trend which reflect the interest in the quality and the extension of the life, but vice versa in fields of the textile, and information media. The innovation index in fields of the construction, pharmaceutic, and biotechnology index more than average, but vice versa in fields of the information media and electric/telecommunication. In case of technology productivity, more than 2 patentees are included in one patented technology. It has been determined that the technology productivity is decreased because of an increasing number of researcher participating the technology development, which is the recent trend of technology advancement.

  • The rising pace of technological change in information and communications technology (ICT) has provoked technological convergence by providing a new mode of diversification. This paper investigates the nature of ICT-based converging technologies by examining comparative empirical evidence on converging versus nonconverging technologies in relation to the following issues: patent application trends, concentration across technologies, the concentration of patenting activity across firms, R&D efforts, and a technology impact index. For this study, a new operational definition of ICT-based converging technology is derived, and a massive quantity of patents, up to around 600,000, is analyzed. This study follows the International Patent Classification as well as the modified European Commission's industry classification system for the classification of technologies and industries, respectively.

  • The hydrogen storage is one of the key technologies to achieve the successful hydrogen economy and a chain to connect hydrogen production to its utilization. In this paper, characteristics and strong candidates of hydrogen storage technologies were analyzed from the objective information of patents. Also, the hydrogen storage technology trends and gaps were assessed using statistical or qualitative analysis. In this study the patents applied in Korea, Japan, US and EU from 10 or 20 years ago to 2011 were analyzed. The result of patent analysis could be used for developing or searching for promising technology of the hydrogen storage.

  • The patent application state of Europe, U.S.A, and Korea was analyzed to grasp the technology development trends and to suggest a direction for research development of health related shoes. Europe has high concentration of patent activity in corrective treatment, while Korea has high concentration in fitness and U.S.A in diet related fields. Numerous shape and structure designs were done to have the effect of corrective treatment. Adding weight to shoes has been used to create diet-effect, but it suggests a lack of technical methods to increase weight effectively. For fitness effect, variation of shape and structure of the outsole are often used.

  • Due to the intensifying global technological competition, the strategic and economic importance of intellectual property such as patents as intangible assets is increasing. The purpose of this study is to understand the current status of patent innovation in the service industry and to derive the characteristics and implications of patent innovation in the service industry. To this end, this study conducted an investigation and analysis to understand the characteristics of patent innovation in the service industry based on the data from the business activity survey. The proportion of patent companies in the service industry, characteristics of each service industry, proportion of each service industry, and the number of patent rights holdings were analyzed. In addition, the trend of patent changes in the service industry was investigated. The service industry was compared and analyzed with other industries based on the results of the analysis of patent innovation in the service industry. In particular, the service industry was divided into four types in terms of the rate of increase in the proportion of patent companies and the ratio of patent holing companies, and the types were derived. Based on the analysis results, the characteristics of patent innovation in the service industry were presented. As a result of the study, the proportion of patent holding companies in the service industry was lower than that of other industries, and the gap with other industries was widening, showing that the patent innovation of service companies is lower than that of other industries. The average number of patents held by service industry companies was lower than that of other industries, and the increase rate of the number of patent rights held was also lower than that of other industries, widening the gap. Patent innovation in the service industry can be divided into four quadrants in terms of the rate of increase in the proportion of patent holding companies and the proportion of patent holding companies, and it has been studied that the service industry needs policy support suitable for the characteristics of patent innovation in the quadrant to which the individual service industry belongs.

  • The aim of this paper is to suggest methodology for local governments when discovering locally customized future promising industries with regard to policies of central government, regional competencies, and industrial promising. Firstly, key industries by region specified in '5-years regional industrial development master plan(2014)' were utilized. Secondly, science and technology competency by region was calculated with analyzing patent data in each key industries. Thirdly, industrial promising was verified by calculating Knowledge Stock and Activity Index based on measuring industry-IPC linkage. Based on the methodology proposed above, case study(case of Busan city) was done. Finally, 7 core industries and 94 candidates of future promising industries were extracted on the basis of 5 digit of KSIC subdivision. The methodology is expected to contribute local governments to establish evidence-based, efficient, and future-oriented local R&D roadmapping.

  • This study investigates the determinants of output of a manufacturing firm's innovative activity (the number of patent applications) and spillover effects using a count data model. This paper attempted a negative binomial distribution In order to take into account unobserved heterogeneity. The results of our study suggested that Firm size, R&D intensity, technical network activity, and online business performance have significantly positive effects in the Korean manufacturing industry. Moreover, there are significantly positive spillover effects in the same industry sector.

  • This research aims to propose a systematic approach to identify emerging technology-product portfolio for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Firstly, operational definition of emerging technology for SMEs is presented. Secondly, research framework is suggested and case study to show usefulness of the newly proposed framwork is analyzed. In detail, reference patent set which represent company's capabilities and business area are constructed. The research constructs patent data set for bibliometric analysis using reference patent set and citing patents to 2nd level. Clustering (expert judgement) and keyword based bibliometric approach are used. Then, cluster activity index (AI) and relevance index (RI) comparing with reference patent set are estimated. With emerging technology-product portfolio using AI and RI, a firm can identify emerging technology-product area and monitoring area.
