  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate gas concentrations such as oxygen in ginger storage tunnels, which are the causes of asphyxiation in confined spaces and suggest directions for safety and health management at ginger farms. Methods: Five farms in the Seosan and Taean areas which use underground ginger storage tunnels were chosen and examined with a walk-through survey and direct reading device for oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and carbon monoxide. Results: The oxygen concentration in the storage tunnels with no ventilation was found to be under 18% in summer, which may cause health effects. The concentration in those with ventilation was about 19%. The difference in temperature by measurement day had little effect on the concentration of oxygen. Conclusions: Even though some of farms had used compulsory ventilation systems, none of the farms visited possessed any direct reading device for oxygen. Warning systems using a direct reading device can be more effective, helpful, and required compared to ventilation, considering the difficulty and expense of periodical maintenance of ventilation systems and the fact that a farmer can be placed in danger when unaware of the malfunction of the ventilation system. In addition, a warning system may make farmers more cognitive of agricultural safety and health actions while a ventilation system can cause them to become passive and ignorant of workplace hazards.

  • In this study, the solar chimney, one of the passive solar systems, is proposed as a method to improve the thermal environment of northern zones in buildings. As this well-known system has rarely been used in building projects, an adequate application of the system is proposed in this paper: the solar chimney system is designed to meet the required ventilation rate and consequently to reduce the ventilation load in the northern part of a building. To investigate such a possibility, a numerical model for the system is developed, and results of numerical tests are used for energy simulations. The results were taken into account for test simulations in EnergyPlus. As a result, approximately 75% of the volumetric ventilation rate required in the north zone could be supplied with the air volume acquired through the system and the monthly mean load was reduced by 29.5%, from 1.584 kWh to 1.117 kWh. The analyses of hourly mean heating and ventilation load over the heating period indicated that the system was very effective at around 13:00. Results show that 33% reduction in the ventilation load and 17% in the heating load for the north zone could be acquired through this system.

  • Energy efficiency and indoor air quality have become main issue to develop healthy and sustainable building in these days. As an effort to reduce the energy consumption in multi-residential building, many attempts as like passive design strategies and renewable energy as well as active control method are tried. However, underground parking lot in multi-residential building seldom adopt the sustainable strategies and only mechanical system is installed as usual. Moreover, the mechanical system installed in underground parking lot is rarely operated due to the electric demand for operation after completion. In this study, as an energy efficient measure, natural ventilation system using stack effect as a driving force for underground parking lot will be proposed and the performance of the suggested system will be analyzed by simulation method.

  • To maintain the indoor air quality, many ventilation systems and technologies have been developed in the highly insulated and air tight buildings. In this study, a porous construction material, which is applicable to passive ventilation system, is developed and measured the performances of the permeability and the resistance of water vapor, and the dust collection efficiency. The average coefficient of water vapor permeability shows $3.6\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg$, which is slightly higher than Hanji ($2.4{\sim}3.2\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg$) and the average water vapor resistance factor shows $0.303\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg/g$, which is slightly smaller than Hanji($0.309{\sim}0.315\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg/g$). The pressure drop of the porous construction material is smaller than the HEPA filter and the minimum dust collection efficiency shows 82.8% in the range of $2{\sim}9\;cm/s$.

  • In the present study, a passive control method, using the porous wall and cavity system, is applied to the shock wave/boundary layer interactions in transonic moist air flow. The two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations, which are fully coupled with a droplet growth equation, are solved by the third-order MUSCL type TVD finite difference scheme. Baldwind-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the present control method, the total pressure losses of the flow and the time-dependent behaviour of shock motions are analyzed in detail. The computed results show that the present passive control method considerably reduces the total pressure losses due to the shock/boundary layer interaction in transonic moist air flow and suppresses the unsteady shock wave motions over the airfoil, as well. It is also found that the location of the porous ventilation significantly influences the control effectiveness.

  • The objective of this study is to observe today's situation and direction in relation with the natural air-conditioning and heating system to expand the architectural utilization of natural management for human comfort and energy conservation in architectural design. Also this study to provide the fundamental knowledge and. design-techniques on environment-friendly architecture in connection with 'natural idea in architecture'. In accordance with this intention, this thesis is composed of the following contents : 1) to understand the fundermental concepts about natural air-conditioning and heating system, 2) to review the traditional characteristics in Korean and Southeast Asian architecture related to natural air-conditioning and heating system, 3) to examine modern design-techniques in relation with natural air-conditioning and heating system in the selected area, 4) to attempt to synthesize the whole situation. Environment-friendly architecture using natural ideas and design-techniques in architecture is very important architectural aspect in a current architecture, also for the future. In spite of general considerations, it is expected that this study is use to understand the principle and practical application of natural air-conditioning and heating system in architectural design.

  • This study aims to identify differences and lessons in eco-school planning techniques and sustainable design methods by analyzing comparatively green building certification system and the cases of sustainable schools in US, Korea and Japan. As a result of the comparative analysis, green building certification system for school facilities, both domestic and international, is categorized into external environment, energy, materials and resources, and indoor environment. From the case study, it is common that roof garden and biotopes are installed for external environment, while energy saving, passive energy utilization methods for natural lighting and ventilation such as arrangement planning, courtyard, top-light, shading devices, solar panel and insulation by roof garden are most frequently used. Also, storm water uses, water saving equipment and sustainable materials are often introduced for resource savings. Concerns for indoor environment is frequently addressed by introducing natural light and ventilation in the buildings, which makes ultimately a comfortable space.

  • The ventilation frequency of 0.5 times in residential facilities is applied mandatorily to the housing facilities containing more than 100 house units to improve the indoor air quality and create comfortable interior conditions and pleasantness for residents. The Building Energy Efficiency Rating system requires the implementation of leakage test based on ventilation frequency with the test results being reflected in the efficiency ratings, thereby stimulating the precise construction of the fittings in the periphery of windows and savings of energy that can be lost due to the infiltration air. The inspection results of the Building Energy Efficiency Rating at the site showed that the ventilation frequency was in the range between 0.63 and 0.71 and that the difference was found to have a significant effect on the amount of energy reduction. It is urgent to conduct the study on highly leakage-proof buildings and construction methods, along with the expansion of mandatory leakage-proof diagnosis of non-residential buildings, considering the mandatory ventilation frequency below 0.6 for passive houses under the European standards and the target set by Korea to introduce the passive house, the rigorous standard for energy efficiency in buildings and mitigating their ecological footprint, by 2017 and achieve the zero house by 2025.
