The metallic energy dissipation device (EDD) has been widely accepted as a useful tool for passive control of buildings against earthquakes. The distribution of metallic EDDs in a multi-story building may have significant influence on its seismic performance, which can be greatly enhanced if the distribution scheme is properly designed. This paper addresses the optimal distribution problem in the aim of achieving a desired level of performance using the minimum number of metallic EDDs. Five local search heuristic algorithms are proposed to solve the problem. Four base structures are presented as numerical examples to verify the proposed algorithms. It is indicated that the performance of different algorithms may vary when applied in different situations. Based on the results of the numerical verification, the recommended guidelines are finally proposed for choosing the appropriate algorithm in different occasions.

In this paper, spoofing effects on a GNSS receiver were analyzed. The spoofer (spoofing device) was classified to two categories. One is an active spoofer and the other is a passive spoofer. The active spoofer was considered for analysis. For the analysis of spoofing effects on a GNSS receiver, a real-time GNSS spoofing simulator was developed. The simulator was consisted with two parts which are a baseband signal generation part and a RF up-conversion part. The first GNSS baseband signal was generated according to spoofing parameters such as range, range rate, GNSS navigation data, spoofing to GNSS signal ratio, and etc. The generated baseband signal was up-converted to GNSS L1 band. Then the signal transmitted to a GNSS signal. For a perfect spoofing, a spoofer knew an accurate position and velocity of a spoofing target. But, in real world, that is not nearly possible. Although uncertainty of position and velocity of the target was existed, the spoofer was operated as an efficient jammer.

Lots of semi-active control devices have been developed in recent years because they have the best features of passive and active system. Especially, controllable magneto-rheological(MR) fluid devices have received significant attention in these area of research. The MR fluid is the material that reversibly changes from a free-flowing, linear viscous fluid to a semisolid with a controllable yield strength in milliseconds when exposed to a magnetic field. If the magnetic field is induced by moving a permanent magnet instead of applying current to a solenoid, it is possible to design a MR damper consuming low power because the power consumption is reduced at steady state. This paper proposes valve mode MR damper using permanent magnetic circuit that has wide range of operation with low power consumption, a design parameter is adopted. The magnetic circuit, material of choke and choke type are selected experimentally with the design parameter. The behaviors of the damper are examined and torque tracking control using PID feedback controller is performed for step, ramp and sinusoidal trajectiories.

The studies of seismic response control are mainly conducted on rahmen structure until now. Spatial structures have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. So, the results of these studies are very limited for vibration control and seismic design of spatial structures. TMD(Tuned Mass Damper) is one of the vibration control device that is mainly used to reduce the vibration level of high-rised building, bridge or stadium structure. In this study, an arch structure was used as an example structure because it has primary characteristics of spatial structures and the seismic behaviour of spatial structures may fundamentally differ from the conventional building structures. So, the vibration control performance is evaluated according to the change of TMD mass and TMD location. It is reasonable to install TMD at the quarter point that is dominant mode vector of 1st mode, And it is appropriate that TMD mass ratio is 2% in the seismic response control of arch structure.

Along with the increase in the standard of living, the interest and awareness level of the public about environmental issues have also gradually increased. Recently, time spent on indoor activities have increased and the need for awareness and demand on methods in improving the quality of an indoor environment has been recognized. The purpose of this study is to sense the environment information through real-time monitoring of the room environment by using the IoT based technology and to maintain and improve the indoor environment to an appropriate level through the developed interlocking controller device. This provides an automatic control system in improving the indoor environment at home and other small areas like general offices in place of the traditional passive interior environmental improvement actions or large-scale facility control system. A status analysis with the relative reference values of the air quality and CO2, temperature and humidity and illumination and noise was applied through transmitting a control signal to automatic control module in accordance with the nine indoor environment standards set to improve the indoor environment.

Recently, as large structures such as high-rise building and long span bridge become lighter and more flexible, the necessity of structural control for reducing excessive dynamic response due to seismic excitation is increased. In this study, a semi-active base isolation system using Magneto-Sensitive (MS) rubbers is proposed to effectively protect structures against earthquakes. MS Rubber is a class of smart controllable materials whose mechanical properties change instantly by the application of a magnetic field. To demonstrate the performance of this device, the MS Rubber isolation system is compared to Lead-Rubber Bearing (LRB) isolation systems and judged based on computed responses to several historical earthquakes. The MS Rubber isolation system is shown to achieve notable decreases in base drifts over comparable passive systems with no accompanying increase in base shears or in accelerations imparted to the superstructure. The proposed MS Rubber system is shown to perform better than the passive isolation system.

In this paper, a Z-source hybrid active power filter is proposed to compensate the harmonics and reactive power in power distribution system. The proposed system is composed of a 7th harmonics-tuned passive filter and an active power filter with a Z-source inverter topology, while voltage source PWM inverter or current source PWM inverter are applied as the power converter topology of conventional active power filters. The Z-source impedance network along with shoot through capability would ensure a constant DC voltage across the DC link. A polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell is employed as an compensation DC energy source of the proposed system and its equivalent R-L-C circuit is modeled for simulation. As the compensation and control algorithm of the proposed system, the current synchronous detection algorithm is applied. The simulation analysis by PSIM is performed under the three-phase 220V/60Hz voltage source and 25A nonlinear diode loads. The effectiveness of the proposed the system is verified in the steady and transient states.

A pounding tuned mass damper (PTMD) can be considered as a passive device, which combines the merits of a traditional tuned mass damper (TMD) and a collision damper. A recent analytical study by the authors demonstrated that the PTMD base on the energy dissipation during impact is able to achieve better control effectiveness over the traditional TMD. In this paper, a PTMD prototype is manufactured and applied for seismic response reduction to examine its efficacy. A series of shaking table tests is conducted in a three-story building frame model under single-dimensional and two-dimensional broadband earthquake excitations with different excitation intensities. The ability of the PTMD to reduce the structural responses is experimentally investigated. The results show that the traditional TMD is sensitive to input excitations, while the PTMD mostly has improved control performance over the TMD to remarkably reduce both the peak and root-mean-square (RMS) structural responses under single-dimensional earthquake excitation. Unlike the TMD, the PTMD is found to have the merit of maintaining a stable performance when subjected to different earthquake loadings. In addition, it is also indicated that the performance of the PTMD can be enhanced by adjusting the initial gap value, and the control effectiveness improves with the increasing excitation intensity. Under two-dimensional earthquake inputs, the PTMD controls remain outperform the TMD controls; however, the oscillation of the added mass is observed during the test, which may induce torsional vibration modes of the structure, and hence, result in poor control performance especially after a strong earthquake period.
Adopting sloped rolling-type isolation devices underneath a raised floor system has been proved as one of the most effective approaches to mitigate seismic responses of the protected equipment installed above. However, pounding against surrounding walls or other obstructions may occur if such a base-isolated raised floor system is subjected to long-period excitation, leading to adverse effects or even more severe damage. In this study, real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) is adopted to assess the control performance of a smart base-isolated raised floor system as it is an efficient and cost-effective experimental method. It is composed of multiple sloped rolling-type isolation devices, a rigid steel platen, four magnetorheological (MR) dampers, and protected high-tech equipment. One of the MR dampers is physically tested in the laboratory while the remainders are numerically simulated. In order to consider the effect of input excitation characteristics on the isolation performance, the smart base-isolated raised floor system is assumed to be located at the roof of a building and the ground level. Four control algorithms are designed for the MR dampers including passive-on, switching, modified switching, and fuzzy logic control. Six artificial spectrum-compatible input excitations and three slope angles of the isolation devices are considered in the RTHS. Experimental results demonstrate that the incorporation of semi-active control into a base-isolated raised floor system is effective and feasible in practice for high-tech industry.
