The instantaneous flow characteristics of a round jet issuing normally into a crossflow has been studied using a flow visualization technique and particle image velocimetry. The effects of parameters such as jet inflow profile and turbulence intensity of the jet are evaluated for various Reynolds numbers in range between 735 and 3150, which are based on the crossflow velocity and jet-pipe diameter. The jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio is fixed at the value of 3.3. Instantaneous later tomographic images of the symmetry plane of the crossflow jet show that there exist very different natures in the flow structures of the near-field of the jet even though the velocity ratio is same. It is found that when the turbulence intensity of jet is elevated, the shear layer becomes much thicker due to the strong entrainment of the ambient fluid by turbulent interaction between the jet and crossflow. The detailed characteristics of instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields are presented to illustrate the effects of the above parameters on the vertical structures of the crossflow jet.
The present study numerically investigate the effects of the Syngas chemical kinetics on the basic flame properties and the structure of the Syngas diffusion flames. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interact ion and the spatial inhomogeneity of scalar dissipation rate. the Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model(EPFM) with multiple flamelets has been applied to simulate the combustion processes and NOx formation in the syngas turbulent nonpremixed flames. Due to the ability for interactively describing the transient behaviors of local flame structures with CFD solver, the EPFM model can effectively account for the detailed mechanisms of NOx format ion including thermal NO path, prompt and nitrous NOx format ion, and reburning process by hydrocarbon radical without any ad-hoc procedure. validation cases include the Syngas turbulent nonpremixed jet and swirling flames. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the sensitivity of the Syngas chemical kinetics as well as the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent Syngas nonpremixed flames.

An experimental study to evaluate dynamic structures of flow and turbulence characteristics in bubble-driven liquid flow in a rectangular tank with a varying flow rate of compressed air is conducted. Liquid flow fields are measured by time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) with fluorescent tracer particles to eliminate diffused reflections, and by an image intensifier to acquire enhanced clean particle images. Instantaneous vector fields are investigated by using the two frame cross-correlation function and bad vectors are eliminated by magnitude difference technique. By proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis, the energy distributions of spatial and temporal modes are acquired. When Reynolds number increases, bubble-induced turbulent motion becomes dominant rather than the recirculating flow near the side wall. The total kinetic energy transferred to the liquid from the rising bubbles shows a nonlinear relation regarding the energy input because of the interaction between bubbles and free surface.
The Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (DQMOM) has been presented for the solution of population balance equation in the wide range of the multi-phase flows. This method has the inherently interesting features which can be easily applied to the multi-inner variable equation. In addition, DQMOM is capable of easily coupling the gas phase with the discrete phases while it requires the relatively low computational cost. Soot inception, subsequent aggregation, surface growth and oxidation are described through a population balance model solved with the DQMOM for soot formation. This approach is also able to represent the evolution of the soot particle size distribution. The turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the laminar flamelet model together with the presumed PDF approach and the spherical harmonic P-1 approximation is adopted to account for the radiative heat transfer.

The representative interactive flamelet(RIF) concept has been applied to numerically simulate the combustion processes and pollutant formation in the HSDI diesel engine. In order to account for the spatial inhomogeneity of the scalar dissipation rate, the eulerian particle flamelet model using the multiple flamelets has been employed. The vaporization effects on turbulence-chemistry interaction are included in the present RIF procedure. the results of numerical modeling using the rif concept are compared with experimental data and with numerical results of the widely-used ad-hoc combustion model. Numerical results indicate that the rif approach including the vaporization effect on turbulent spray combustion process successfully predicts the ignition delay characteristics as well as the pollutant formation in the HSDI diesel engines.

A heated square cylinder (with height $A^*$) is kept parallel to the cold wall at a fixed gap height $0.5A^*$ from the wall. Another adiabatic rectangular cylinder (of same height $A^*$ and width $0.5A^*$) is placed upstream in an inline tandem arrangement. The spacing between the two cylinders is fixed at $3.0A^*$. The inlet flow is taken as Couette-Poiseuille flow based non-linear velocity profile. The conventional fluid (also known as base fluid) is chosen as water (W) whereas the nanoparticle material is selected as $Al_2O_3$. Numerical simulations are performed by using SIMPLE algorithm based Finite Volume approach with staggered grid arrangement. The dependencies of hydrodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of the cylinder on non-dimensional parameters governing the nanofluids and the fluid flow are explored here. A critical discussion is made on the mechanism of improvement/reduction (due to the presence of the upstream cylinder) of heat transfer and drag coefficient, in comparison to those of an isolated cylinder. It is observed that the heat transfer increases with the increase in the non-linearity in the incident velocity profile at the inlet. For the present range studied, particle concentration has a negligible effect on heat transfer.
This study investigates flow fields and energy dissipation due to regular wave interaction with a perforated vertical breakwater, through velocity data measurement in a two-dimensional wave tank. As the waves propagate through the perforated breakwater, the incoming wave energy is reflected back to the ocean, dissipated due to very turbulent flows near the perforations and inside the chamber, and transmitted through the perforations of the breakwater. This transmitted energy is further reduced due to the presence of the perforated back wall. Hence most of the energy is either reflected or dissipated in the vicinity of the structure, and only a small amount of the incoming wave energy is transmitted through the structure. In this study, particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed to measure two-dimensional instantaneous velocity fields in the vicinity of the structure. Measured velocity data was treated statistically, and used to calculate mean flow fields, turbulence intensity and turbulent kinetic energy. For investigation of the flow pattern, time-averaged mean velocity fields were examined, and discussed using the cross-sections through slot and wall for comparison. Flow fields were obtained and compared for various cases with different regular wave conditions. In addition, turbulent kinetic energy was estimated as an approach to understand energy dissipation near the perforated breakwater. The turbulent kinetic energy was distributed against wave height and wave period to see the dependence on wave conditions.

This paper describes the development of new sweeping machine based on Cyclone Technology, which maintains constant suction power and uses it in a industrial applications as a method for dust removed from grinding work. The performance of a cyclone separator is determined by the turbulence characteristics and particle-particle interaction. To achieve this goal, we design cyclone technology based dust separator for sweeping machine has been proposed as a system which is suitable to work utilizing dust suction alternative to conventional manual system. and Numerical analysis with computational fluid dynamics(CFD) was carried out to investigate the working fluid that flow into cyclone dust separator in order to design optimal structure of the sweeping machine. The validation of cyclone model with CFD is carried out by comparing with experimental results.

An experimental study has been carried out at circulating water channel to investigate the non-breaking and breaking waves generated by a submerged circular cylinder steadily moving under the free surface. Free surface profiles and pressure distributions on cylinder surface were measured at various submerged depths of cylinder. They were complemented by the measurements of velocities, head losses and turbulence intensities in the wakes of body and "breaker". Part 1 of this three-part paper describes the experimental arrangement and the patterns of wave profile and pressure distribution at various depths of submergence. These databank contributions are of special interest in traditional ship hydrodynamics. In Part 2, special focuses are made to elucidate the viscous and turbulent aspects of flow field. Finally Part 3 will deal with the visualization of instantaneous vortical flow to study the mutual interaction between vorticies shedded from the free-surface and the cylinder using a Particle Image Velocimetry.
The propagation of impact wave induced by landslide and debris flow occurred on the slope of lake, reservoir and bays is a three-dimensional natural phenomenon associated with strong interaction of debris flow and water flow in complex geometrical environments. We carried out 3D numerical modeling of such impact wave in a bay using a multiphase turbulence flow model and a rheology model for non-Newtonian debris flow. Numerical results are compared with previous experimental result to evaluate the performance of present numerical approach. The results underscore that the reasonable predictions of both thickness and speed of debris flow head penetrating below the water surface are crucial to accurately reproduce the maximum peak height and free surface profiles of impact wave. Two predictions computed using different initial debris flow thicknesses become different from the instant when the peaks of impact waves fall due to the gravity. Numerical modeling using relatively thick initial debris flow thickness appears to well reproduce the water surface profile of impact wave propagating across the bay as well as wave run-up on the opposite slope. The results show that the maximum run-up height on the opposite slope is not sensitive to the initial thickness of debris flows of same total volume. Meanwhile, appropriate rheology model for debris flow consisting of inviscid particle only should be employed to more accurately reproduce the debris flow propagating along the channel bottom.
