  • Mechanical properties of aluminum-matrix composites, fabricated by dispersion of fine SiC particulates of which size was less than 1 ${\mu}m$ into 2024 and 7075 aluminum alloys, have been investigated. Homogeneous mixing between the matrix and SiC particulates could be achieved by jar milling for 8 hours with appropriate processing agent. At temperatures below 473K, high-temperature tensile strength of the composites was higher than that of the 2024 and 7075 aluminum alloys which were used as matrix materials. However, tensile strength of the composites was approximated to that of the matrix materials at 573K. Thus, it could be suggested that effects of particle dispersion on tensile strength of aluminum alloys was diminished at temperatures higher than 573K.

  • Fatigue strength of NiAl and Ni$_3$Al particulate reinforced aluminum alloy composites fabricated by the diecasting method was examined at room and elevated temperatures. The results were compared wit h that of SiC particulate reinforced one. The particulate reinforced composites showed some improvement in the static and fatigue strength at elevated temperatures when compared with that of Al alloy. The composites reinforced by intermetallic compound particles showed good fatigue strengths at elevated temperatures especially $Ni_3AI_{p}/Al$ alloy composite showed good fatigue limit up to high temperature of 30$0^{\circ}C$. Adopting intermetallic compound particle as a reinforcement phase, it will be possible to develop MMC representing better fatigue property at elevated temperature.

  • Aluminum alloy 2024 matrix composites reinforced with $Al_2O_3$ particles, were prepared by rheo-compocasting, a process which consists of the incoporation distribution of reinforcement by stirring within a semi-solid alloy. The microstructures and characteristics of the interfaces have been studied using optical microscope and scanning electon microscope in 2024 aluminum alloy composites reinforced with $Al_2O_3$ particles. The main results are as follows: (1) $Al_2O_3$ particles were well distributed in composites by using rheo-compocasting. (2) As the addition of $Al_2O_3$ particle increases, the average dendrite numbers and the hardness were increased. (3) Interaction between $Al_2O_3$ particles and alloy 2024 resulted in the formation of Mg and Cu element rich region around the $Al_2O_3$ particles.

  • This study presents a mathematical model predicting the stress-strain behavior of fiber reinforced (FMMCs) and fiber/particle reinforced metal matrix composites (F/P MMCs). MMCs were fabricated by squeeze casting method using Al2O3 short fiber and particle as reinforcement, and A356 aluminum alloy as matrix. The fiber/particle ratios of F/P MMCs were 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 with the total reinforcement volume fraction of 20 vol.%, and the FMMCs were reinforced with 10 vol,%, 15 vol. %, 20 vol. % of fibers. Tensile tests were conducted and compared with predictions which were derived using laminate analogy theory and multi-failure model of reinforcements. Results show that the tensile strength of FMMCs with 10 vol.% of fiber was well matched with prediction, and as the fiber volume increases, predictions become larger than experimental results. The difference between the prediction and experiment is considered to be a result of matrix allowance of fiber damage in tensile loading. As the fiber volume fraction in FMMCs increases, the fiber damage increases and so that the tensile strength is reduced. The strength of F/P MMCs approaches more closely to the prediction than FMMCs reinforced with 20 vol.% of fibers because F/P MMCs contains small quantity of fibers and thus has a positive effect in fiber strengthening.

  • Aluminum based metal matrix composites(MMCs) are well known for their high specific strength, stiffness and hardness. They are gaining further importance because of their high wear resistance. In this study, Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15% and Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% hybird MMCs' wear behavior were characterized by the pin-on-disk test under various normal load The superior wear resistance was exhibited at Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% MMCs. And this MMCs' predominant wear mechanism is subsurface cracking in the low load wear regime. Others(Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15%) showed the similar wear resistance with each other at the same test condition. In the low load & room temperature condition, the wear resistance was improved due to the high hardness of the ceramic reinforcements. As the test load increased, the wear properties were governed by the wear properties of matrix.

  • This paper presents an analytical method considering tensile strength enhancement in hybrid $Al_2O_3$ fiber/particle/aluminum composites(MMCs). The tensile strength and elastic modulus of the hybrid MMCs are even 20% higher than those of the fiber reinforced MMCs with same volume fraction of reinforcements. This phenomenon is explained by the cluster model which is newly proposed in this research, and the strengthening mechanisms by a cluster is analyzed using simple modified rule of mixtures. From the analysis, it is observed that cluster structure in hybrid MMCs increase the fiber efficiency factor for the tensile strength and the orientation factor for the elastic modulus. The present theory is then compared with experimental results which was performed using squeeze infiltrated hybrid MMCs made of hybrid $Al_2O_3$ short fiber/particle preform and AC8A alloy as base metal, and the agreement is found to be satisfactory.

  • Aluminium-silicon alloy(JIS AC8A) matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles were fabricated by spray-cast forming process, and the microstructure of powders and preforms produced were studied by using an optical and scanning electron microscopy. SiC particles were co-sprayed by mixed phase injection method during the spray casting process. Most of the composite powders formed by this mixed phase injection method exhibit morphology of particle-embedded type, and some exhibits the morphology of particle attached type due to additional attachment of the SiC particles on the surface of the powders in flight. The preforms deposited were resulted in dispersed type microstructure. The pre-solidified droplets and the deposited preform of SiC-reinforced aluminium alloy exhibit finer equiaxed grain size than that of unreinforced aluminium alloy. Eutectic silicons of granular type are crystallized at the corner of the aluminum grains in the preforms deposited, and some SiC particles seem to act as nucleation sites for primary/eutectic silicon during solidification. Such primary/eutectic silicons seem to retard grain growth during the continued spray casting process. It is envisaged from the microstructural observations for the deposited preform that the resultant distribution of SiC injected particles in the Al-Si microsturcture is affected by the amount of liquid phase in the top part of the preform and by the solidification rate of the preform deposited.

  • Reversed plane bending fatigue tests were conducted on SiC particle reinforced and SiC whisker reinforced aluminum composite. The initiation and growth behaviors of small surface fatigue cracks were continuously monitored by the replica technique and the causes of fracture and fracture mechanism were investigated by SEM. The relationship between da/dn and $K_{max}$ show that da/dn increases in high stress level while decrease and again increases with increasing of $K_{max}$ in low stress level for two materials.

  • Creep tests of the TiC particulate reinforced Al composite have been conducted in the temperature ranges from 200 to $500^{\circ}C$. The steady-state cree rate of the composite depended strongly on the temperature and ap' plied stress. The stress exponent for the steady state creep rate of the composites was approximately 17.5 and the activation anergy was calculated to be 390KJ/mol. The steady-state creep equation could be written as $\acute{\varepsilon}_{ss}$ $$(s^{-1})=1.5{\times}10^{-9}\;{\sigma}^{17.5}\exp(-390000/RT)$$. Fracture surface examination showed that the fracture mode of the particulate reinforced composite was ductile by plastic tearing of the aluminum matrix and TiC particle interfaces were offered as sites for crack.

  • Reversed plane bending fatigue tests were conducted on SiC particle aluminum composite. The initiation and growth behaviors of small surface fatigue cracks were continuously monitored by the replica technique and investigated in detail. The fatigue life of MMC is shorter than that of matrix because there exists interface debonding of SiC particles and matrix on the whole face of the notch part in the casting metal matrix composite(MMC). The coalescence of micro-cracks was observed in the tests conducted at high stress levels. Due to the coalescence, a higher crack growth rate of small cracks rather than those of long cracks was recognized in da/dn-$K_{max}$ relationship.
