Membrane fouling index such as Silt Density Index (SDI) and Modified Fouling Index (MFI) is an important parameter in design of the integrated RO/NF membrane processes for drinking water treatment. In this study, the effect of particle, membrane and feed water characteristics on membrane fouling index were investigated systematically. Higher fouling index values were observed when filtering suspensions with smaller particle size and higher feed particle concentration. Larger membrane resistance due to smaller pore size resulted in an increased membrane fouling index. The variations of feed water hardness and TDS concentrations did not show any impact on fouling index, suggesting that there were no significant colloidal interactions among particles and thus the porosity of particle cake layer accumulated on the membrane surface could be assumed to be 0.36 according to random packing density. Based on the experimental observations, fundamental membrane fouling index model was developed using Happel Cell. The effect of primary model parameters including particle size ($a_p$), particle concentration ($C_o$), membrane resistance ($R_m$), were accurately assessed without any fitting parameters, and the prediction of membrane fouling index such as MFI exhibited very good agreement with the experimental results.

A constitutive model based on a combination of a micromechanics-based weakened interface elastic model (Lee and Pyo, 2007) and a crack nucleation model (Karihaloo and Fu, 1989) is proposed to predict the effective elastic behavior of particle-reinforced composites. The model specifically considers imperfect interfaces in particles and microcracks in the matrix. To exercise the proposed constitutive model and to investigate the influence of model parameters on the behavior of the composites, numerical simulations on uniaxial tension tests were conducted. Furthermore, the present prediction is compared with available experimental data in the literature to verify the accuracy of the proposed constitutive model.
Soot particles emitted from combustion processes are often coated by non-absorbing organic materials, which enhance the global warming effect of soot particles. It is of importance to study the condensation characteristics of soot particles experimentally and theoretically to reduce the uncertainty of the climate impact of soot particles. In this study, the condensational growth of soot particles in a tubular coater was modeled by a one-dimensional (1D) plug flow model and a two-dimensional (2D) laminar flow model. The effects of 2D heat and mass transports on the predicted particle growth were investigated. The temperature and coating material vapor concentration distributions in radial direction, which the 1D model could not accounted for, affected substantially the particle growth in the coater. Under the simulated conditions, the differences between the temperatures and vapor concentrations near the wall and at the tube center were large. The neglect of these variations by the 1D model resulted in a large error in modeling the mass transfer and aerosol dynamics occurring in the coater. The 1D model predicted the average temperature and vapor concentration quite accurately but overestimated the average diameter of the growing particles considerably. At the outermost grid, at which condensation begins earliest due to the lowest temperature and saturation vapor concentration, condensing vapor was exhausted rapidly because of the competition between condensations on the wall and on the particle surface, decreasing the growth rate. At the center of the tube, on the other hand, the growth rate was low due to high temperature and saturation vapor concentration. The effects of Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis were not high enough to transport the coating material vapor quickly from the tube center to the wall. The 1D model based on perfect radial mixing could not take into account this phenomenon, resulting in a much higher growth rate than what the 2D model predicted. The result of this study indicates that contrary to a previous report for a thermodenuder, 2D heat and mass transports must be taken into account to model accurately the condensational particle growth in a coater.
This study deals with the development and improvement of a particle dispersion model for quick response to water pollutant accidents. The developed model is based on the shear dispersion theory where vertical mixing is done by step by step mixing by vertical and molecular diffusion algorithm. For the quick response to chemical accidents, an algorithm for multi-core modeling for the particle dispersion model is applied. After the application of multi-core operation using OpenMP directives to the model, the relation for the calculation time and particle size were determined along with the number of cores used for parallel programming to determine the model time for chemical accident responses. The results showed the adequate conditions for the modeling of chemical accidents for quick response and to increase the applicability of the model.
In this study we perform Lagrangian stochastic model simulation for heavy particle. Reynolds(2002) construct simple LSM for heavy particle, which lack in detailed parameter study and statistics of turbulent flow within his paper. we investigate more simple but important turbulent statistics such as autocorrelation for velocity and acceleration, Lagrangian structure function and dispersion statistics parameterized by using DNS.
To overcome the weaknesses of conventional finite difference model in pollutant dispersion modelling, the particle tracking method is used. In this study, a three dimensional particle tracking model which can be used in Princeton Ocean Model was developed and verified through the various numerical tests. Usability of the model was also confirmed through the ocean outfall modelling in Tampa Bay, Florida. As it is expected, random walk model showed the less dispersion in a range compared to the conventional finite difference model and its reason is estimated due to an error from numerical diffusion which the conventional model holds. This newly developed model is expected to be used in various ocean dispersion modelling.

Lagrangian particle dispersion model(LPDM) is an effective tool to calculate the dispersion from a point source since it dose not induce numerical diffusion errors in solving the pollutant dispersion equation. Fictitious particles are released to the atmosphere from the emission source and they are then transported by the mean velocity and diffused by the turbulent eddy motion in the LPDM. The concentration distribution from the dispersed particles in the calculation domain are finally estimated by applying a particle count method or a Gaussian kernel method. The two methods for calculating concentration profiles were compared each other and tested against the analytic solution and the tracer experiment to find the strength and weakness of each method and to choose computationally time saving method for the LPDM. The calculated concentrations from the particle count method was heavily dependent on the number of the particles released at the emission source. It requires lots fo particle emission to reach the converged concentration field. And resulting concentrations were also dependent on the size of numerical grid. The concentration field by the Gaussian kernel method, however, converged with a low particle emission rate at the source and was in good agreement with the analytic solution and the tracer experiment. The results showed that Gaussian kernel method was more effective method to calculate the concentrations in the LPDM.

Numerical analysis was conducted to characterize particle deposition on a horizontal rotating disk with thermophorectic effect under laminar flow field. The particle transport mechanisms considered were convection, Brownian diffusion, gravitational settling and thermophoresis. The averaged particle deposition velocities and their radial distributions for the upper surface of the disk were calculated from the particle concentration equation in a Eulerian frame of reference for rotating speeds of 0∼1000rpm and temperature differences of 0∼5K. It was observed from the numerical results that the rotation effect of disk increased the averaged deposition velocities, and enhanced the uniformity of local deposition velocities on the upper surface compared with those of the disk at rest. It was also shown that the heating of the disk with ΔT=5K decreased deposition velocity over a fairly broad range of particle sizes. Finally, an approximate deposition velocity model for the rotating disk was suggested. The comparison of the present numerical results with the results of the approximate model and the available experimental results showed relatively good agreement between them.
Polymer matrix composites are widely used in many engineering applications as they can be customized to meet a desired performance while not only maintaining low cost but also reducing weight. Polymers can experience viscoelastic-viscoplastic response when subjected to external loadings. Various reinforcements and fillers are added to polymers which bring out more complexity in analyzing the timedependent response. This study formulates an integrated micromechanical model and finite element (FE) analysis for predicting effective viscoelastic-viscoplastic response of polymer based hybrid composites. The studied hybrid system consists of unidirectional short-fiber reinforcements and a matrix system which is composed of solid spherical particle fillers dispersed in a homogeneous polymer constituent. The goal is to predict effective performance of hybrid systems having different compositions and properties of the fiber, particle, and matrix constituents. A combined Schapery's viscoelastic integral model and Valanis's endochronic viscoplastic model is used for the polymer constituent. The particle and fiber constituents are assumed linear elastic. A previously developed micromechanical model of particle reinforced composite is first used to obtain effective mechanical properties of the matrix systems. The effective properties of the matrix are then integrated to a unit-cell model of short-fiber reinforced composites, which is generated using the FE. The effective properties of the matrix are implemented using a user material subroutine in the FE framework. Limited experimental data and analytical solutions available in the literatures are used for comparisons.
An analysis model on debris transport in the containment floor of pressurized water reactors is developed in which the flow field is calculated by Eulerian conservation equations of mass and momentum and the debris particles are traced by Lagrange equations of motion using the pre-determined flow field data. For the flow field calculation, two-dimensional Shallow Water Equations derived from Navier Stokes equations are solved using the Finite Volume Method, and the Harten-Lax-van Leer scheme is used for accuracy to capture the dry-to-wet interface. For the debris tracing, a simplified two-dimensional Lagrangian particle tracking model including drag force is developed. Advanced schemes to find the positions of particles over the containment floor and to determine the position of particles reflected from the solid wall are implemented. The present model is applied to calculate the transport fraction to the Hold-up Volume Tank in Advanced Power Reactors 1400. By the present model, the debris transport fraction is predicted, and the effect of particle density and particle size on transport is investigated.
