In this paper, hydraulic & thermal developing and fully developed laminar forced convection flow of a water-$Al_2O_3$ nanofluid in a circular horizontal tube with uniform heat flux at the wall, are investigated numerically. A single phase model employed with temperature independent properties. The thermal entrance length is presented in this paper. The variations of the convective heat transfer coefficient and shear stress are shown in the entrance region and fully developed region along different nanoparticles concentration and Reynolds numbers. Convective heat transfer coefficient for nanofluids is larger than that of the base fluid. It is shown that heat transfer is enhanced and shear stress is increased as the particle volume concentration increases. The heat transfer improves, as Reynolds number increases.
In current study, natural frequency response of fiber metal laminated (FML) fibrous composite panels is optimized under different combination of the three classical boundary conditions using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and finite strip method (FSM). The ply angles, numbers of layers, panel length/width ratios, edge conditions and thickness of metal sheets are chosen as design variables. The formulation of the panel is based on the classical laminated plate theory (CLPT), and numerical results are obtained by the semi-analytical finite strip method. The superiority of the PSO algorithm is demonstrated by comparing with the simple genetic algorithm.

A study of heat transfer and thermophoretic particle deposition has been carried out for the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition(MCVD) process. A new concept utilizing two torches is suggested to simulate the heating effects from repeated traversing torches. Calculation results for the wall temperatures and deposition efficiency are in good agreement with experimental data. The effects of variable properties are included and heat flux boundary condition is used to simulate the moving torch heating. A conjugate heat transfer which includes heat conduction through solid layer and heat teansfer in a gas in a tube is analyzed. Of particular interests are the effects of torch speeds and solid layer thicknesses on the deposition efficiency, rate and the tapered entry length.

The effect of radiation and buoyancy on the thermophoresis phenomenon owing to the presence of highly absorbing, emitting particles (such as soot or pulverized coal) suspended in a two phase flow system was investigated numerically for a turbulent mixed convection flow. The analysis of conservation equations for a gas-particle flow system was performed on the basis of a two-fluid model from a continuum Eulerian viewpoint. The modified van Driest and Cebeci mixing length turbulence model was adopted in the anaylsis of turbulent flow. In addition, the P-1 approximation was used to evaluate the radiation heat transfer. As expected from the particle concentration and drift velocity distribution, the cumulative collection efficiency E (x) becomes larger when the buoyancy effect increases (i.e. higher Grashof number), while smaller as the radiation effect increases (i.e. higher optical thickness).

Both motion of free metallic particles from which most GIS internal failures are caused and partial discharges from the particles were examined using EHV GIS test chamber. Effects from particle length and gas pressure which are main factors to lead to breakdown failure were investigated theoretically and experimentally. Magnitude of both lift-off voltage and partial discharge inception voltage were measured respectively and, through these measurements, this paper showed the possibility of predicting breakdown fault and of taking action to prevent the fault in advance. The measurement of partial discharge when the particles began to move could be adopted to decide minimum sensitivity in developing predictive diagnostic equipments. Both the amount of apparent discharge and real discharge in GIS were examined theoretically and experimentally, then experimental results were analyzed on the basis of the theory.

We applied PIV method to obtain instantaneous and ensemble averaged velocity fields from the first row to the fifth row of a staggered tube bundle. The Reynolds number based on the tube diameter and the maximum velocity was set to be 4,000. Remarkably different natures are observed in the developing bundle flow. Such differences are depicted in the mean recirculating bubble length and the vorticity distributions. The jet-like flow seems to be a dominant feature after the second row and usually skew. However, the ensemble averaged fields show symmetric profiles and the flow characteristics between the third and fourth measuring planes are not so different. comparison between the PIV data and the RANS simulation yields severe disagreement in spite of the same Reynolds number. It can be explained that the distinct jet-like unsteady motions are not to be accounted in th steady numerical analysis.
The effect of ribbed spacers having metallic particle attached to the post-type spacer on dielectric breakdown phenomena has been investigated using electric field analysis for imaginary streamer process and a breakdown experiment. It was described that the electric field analysis and the dielectric breakdown test were performed on the case that the particle was attached to the various position of the ribbed spacer having various shapes. As a result, the breakdown voltage of the spacer with two ribs was highest, and it was varied by the length and the thickness of the rib. Especially, in case of the rib with round edge, the breakdown voltage was higher than that with rectangular edge, which complied with the result through the field analysis.
Digital holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV) is developed by single high-speed camera and single continuous laser with long coherent length. This system can directly capture 4000 hologram fringe images for 1 second through a camera computer memory. The 3D particle location is made of the reconstruction by using a computer hologram algorithm. This system can successfully be applied to instantaneous 3D velocity measurement in the water flow inside a micro-tube. The average of 100 instantaneous velocity vectors is obtained by reconstruction and tracking with the time of evolution of recorded fringes images. In the near future, we will apply this technique to measure 3D flow information inside various micro structures.

A "two-fluid" equation model has been applied for predicting gas-solid suspension flows through a Venturi tube. In the "two-fluid"equation model, the bulk motion of the particles is considered as a continuum whose governing equation is obtained by averaging the conservation equations over a volume and expressing the equations in differential forms. Closure of the time-mean equations is achieved by modeling the turbulent correlations with an extended mixing-length theory. Proposed closure model is found to aptly simulate the dependency of the static pressure drop on the particle size, flow rate and the loading ratio.d the loading ratio.
The Characteristics of the conical vortices on the roof surface of a low-rise building has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimerty) technique. The scaled model of TTU building with 1:92 scaling ratio was used. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the length of the model was $1.96{\times}10^5$. When the angle of attack for the building model is $45^{\circ}$, the conical vortices are occurred symmetrically and the center of vortices are changed with respect to the angle of the approaching flow. The rotating direction of the conical vortices found to be counter-rotating. The secondary vortex motions are investigated using the instantaneous flow field data.
