  • In some binary solution, closed miscibility loop of temperature-composition phase diagram occurs where both an upper critical solution temperature and a lower critical solution temperature exist. It is known that this phenomena occurs if specific interaction between molecules exists. There are several ways describing the specific interaction. In this work it is assumed that the total number of specific interactions is distributed according to binomial distribution. In this case, exact mathematical conditions for closed miscibility loop phase behavior are derived when the specific interaction is applied to regular solution theory, quasichemical theory and Flory-Huggins lattice theory. And we investigated the effect of parameters on the phase diagram. The phase diagram of water-nicotine is calculated and compared with experimental data.

  • Various partial miscibilities of binary liquid mixtures predicted by the extended Flory-Huggins lattice theory are shown in this article, and the mathematical conditions for each partial miscibility are obtained. And in terms of the theory it is shown that the unusual partial miscibility of water-2-butanol system can occur.

  • In this article, new Gibbs free energy of mixing is derived when there are specific interactions between solvent-solute molecules and between solute-solute molecules in binary solutions. It is asssumed that a probability of specific interactions satisfies a binomial distribution. Using this Gibbs free energy of mixing, we investigate possible types of partial miscibilities and show that Ω-shaped temperature-composition phase diagrams can exist. We calculate Ω-shaped temperature-composition phase diagram of water-2-butanol system and compare that with result calculated by the method of Hino5 et al. and the experimental data.

  • Partial miscibilities of polymer solutions are investigated when the specific interactions between different molecules are added to the theory of Flory's equation of state. Especially, it is shown that the closed loop phase diagram can appear. The general conditions for the partial miscibility are derived and the general effects of several factors to that are investigated.

  • Biodegradable polymeric blends are expected to be widely used by industry due to their environmental friendliness and comparable mechanical and thermal properties. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) are such biodegradable polymers which aim to replace commodity polymers in future applications. Since cost and brittleness of PLA is quite high, it is not economically feasible to use it alone for day to day use as a packaging material without blending. In this study, blends of PLA and PBS with various compositions were prepared by using a laboratory-scale twin-screw extruder at $180^{\circ}C$. Morphological, thermal, rheological and mechanical properties were investigated on the samples obtained by compression molding to explore suitability of these compositions for packaging applications. Morphology of the blends was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Morphology showed a clear phase difference trend depending on blend composition. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) thermograms of the blends indicated that the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of PLA did not change much with the addition of PBS, but analysis showed that for PLA/PBS blend of up to 80/20 composition there is partial miscibility between the two polymers. The tensile strength and modulus were measured by the Instron Universal Testing Machine. Tensile strength, modulus and percentage (%) elongation at break of the blends decreased with PBS content. However, tensile strength and modulus values of PLA/PBS blend for up to 80/20 composition nearly follow the mixing rule. Rheological results also show miscibility between the two polymers for PBS composition less than 20% by weight. PBS reduced the brittleness of PLA, thus making it a contender to replace plastics for packaging applications. This work found a partial miscibility between PBS and PLA by investigating thermal, mechanical and morphological properties.

  • Effects of CR contents in NR/CR blends on the vulcanization kinetics and miscibility were studied by dynamic DSC and TGA, as well as the mechanical properties. While the vulcanization activation energy showed a constant value of $77.5{\pm}2.5$ kcal/mol regardless of CR contents, reaction rate, however, was observed to be somewhat lowered at increased CR contents. Partial miscibility was found between NR and CR phases at lower CR content of 3 wt%, but immiscibility was observed at higher CR content of 21 wt%. Mechanical properties were also affected by this miscibility, showing linear increase of compression set but decrease of tensile strength with CR contents in the blends.

  • Blend samples of biodegradable copolyesterethylene(CPEE) with LDPE were prepared by melt-mixing through 0 to 100% per 10% interval for studying of common use of biodegradable polymer. Miscibility behavior of blend samples has been studied by observing the melting temperature change, melting enthalpy, cold crystallization temperature and crystallization enthalpy using differential scanning calorimetry. It was shown that 10~30% blend composition of CPEE had the partial miscibility from the results of thermal analysis. Valuable compatibility has been observed in all blend composition except the samples of 30~80% CPEE component from results of mechanical properties. Morphology of blends has been observed with scanning electron microscopy. Biodegrability of CPEE/LDPE blends has been evaluated by measuring the change of weight after the inoculation with specific microorganism.

  • In terms of the theory of Flory's Equation of State, the generalized condition for each case of partial miscibilities appearing in the polymer solutions or blends is given. And observing the changes of terms for energies and free volumes in ${\Delta}G_{mix}$ with increasing temperature, their effects on the partial miscibilities are generalized, and the effects of other parameters are also generalized.

  • PP-EVOH(poly(vinyl alchol-co-ethylene)) blends were prepared by the mixing of polypropylene and poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) containing 38mol% of ethylene units (EVOH38) at melt state above PP melting temperature. The materials were characterized by using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and contact angle measurement to detemine the glass transition, meltin, decomposition temperatures, and wettability respectively. From the results, PP-EVOH(poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene)) blends exgibits partial miscibility.
