With the continuous development in insulation of electrical equipment design, the reliability of the system has been enhanced. However, in the manufacturing process and during operation under continues stresses introduce local defects, such as voids between interfaces that can responsible to occurrence of partial discharge (PD), electric field distortion and accumulation of charges. These defects may lead to localize corrosion and material degradation of insulation system, and a serious threat to the equipment. A model of three layers of PI film with air gap is presented to understand the influence of interface and voids on exploitation conditions such as strong electrical field, PD activity and charge movement. The analytical analysis, and experimental results are good agreement and show that the lose contact between interfaces accumulate more residual charges and in consequences increase the electric field intensity and accelerates internal discharges. These residual charges are trapped charges, injected by the electrodes has often same polarity, so the electric field in cavities increases significantly and thus partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) decreases. Contrary, number of PD discharge quantity increases due to interface. Interfacial polarization effect has opposite impact on electric field and PDIV as compare to void.

Most of the high voltage insulation systems, such as the power cable joint having hetero interface, are composed of more than two different insulators to improve insulating performance. The partial discharge(PD) in these hetero interface is expected to affect the total insulation performance. Thus, it is important to study electrical properties on these interfaces. This study described the influence of copper and semiconductive substance defects on $\Phi$-q-n distribution between the interface of the model cable joints to classify PD source. PD was sequentially detected for 600 cycles of the applied voltage. The K-means cluster analysis has been analyzed to investigate the $\Phi$-q-n distribution. The skewness-kurtosis(Sk-Ku) plot from K-means clustering results was defined to quantify cluster distribution and classify distribution patterns. The Sk-Ku plot is composed of skewness and kurtosis along abscissa and ordinate which indicate the asymmetry and the sharpness of distribution. As a result of the Sk-Ku plot, it was confirmed that the data was distributed in 1st 2nd and 3rd quadrant at copper foreign substance defect, but in case of semiconductive foreign substance, the data was distributed in 2nd quadrant only.

In order to improve the reliability of high voltage rotating machines, it is necessary to understand the breakdown mechanism of stator windings. Especially partial discharge(PD) inception and growth are important in stator winding insulation. Recently, many research on the diagnosis of stator winding insulation for large rotating machines have been developed since the 1970s. Capacitive couplers have been the most widely used sensor for on-line partial discharge detection in rotating machines. This paper deals with the electrical on-line monitor characteristics of ceramic coupler(CC) which has been developed to continuously measure the PD activity in operating high voltage motor stator windings on site. We investigated the electrical characteristics(PD quantity, breakdown voltage and frequency response) to develop CC. This paper presents frequency characteristics and laboratory test result to compare conventional 80([F] epoxy-mica coupler(EMC) and 105[pF] CC for PD measurement with 6.6㎸ model stator windings.

Partial discharges (PDs) are electrical sparks that occur inside insulation between two conducting electrodes and can lead to the disastrous failure of insulation systems. To determine the location of a PD, a distributed array of UHF PD sensors is used to detect the electromagnetic (EM) signals emitted from the PD source, and the localization of the PD source can be estimated using the time difference of arrival (TDOA) between EM signals captured by the UHF PD sensor array. There are four popular methods to estimate the TDOA-the first peak method, the cross-correlation method, the energy criterion method, and the average time window threshold method. In this work, we numerically investigate the influence of noise on estimating the TDOA for the four different methods. Numerical results show that the energy criterion method is more robust against noise than other methods.
Partial discharge(PD) tests are used to evaluate the insulation condition of stator windings in two 4.16kV and three 6.6kV motors. These tests were conducted using a conventional partial discharge detector(PDD) and turbine generator analyzer(TGA). Off-line PD measurements were performed on five high voltage motors. PD magnitudes ranged from 1000 pC to 5400 pC at the normal line-to-ground voltage. Five high voltage motors have been equipped with 80pF epoxy-mica coupler on the motor terminal box. The PD pulse from sensors were measured with the TGA instrument. TGA summarizes each plot with two Quantities such as the peak PD magnitude(Qm) and the total PD activity(NQN). The defect mechanisms of high voltage motor can be associated with PD patterns such as internal, slot and conductor surface discharges. The PDD and TGA test results of No. 4 motor showed that internal discharge was detected in voids of the groundwall insulation.
Partial discharge(PD) tests were performed both when the pumped storage generator(rated 13.8kV and 220MVA) was on-line and off-line. This generator has been equipped with 12 bus coupler sensors in directional mode. PD tests were conducted using partial discharge analyzer(PDA), partial discharge meter(PDM) and digital partial discharge detector. PDA showed that the patterns of the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the partial discharge magnitude are in accord with on-line and off-line. The insulation condition was estimated by diagnostic tests(off-line) such as PD magnitude and dissipation factor.
It is common practice to identify the insulation faults of GIS through monitor the contents of SF6 decomposed components. Partial discharges (PD) could lead to the decomposition of SF6 dielectric, so new reactions usually occur in the mixture of the newly decomposed components including traces of H2O and O2. The new reactions also cause the decomposed components to differ due to the different amounts of H2O and O2 even under the same strength of PD. Thus, the accuracy of assessing the insulation faults is definitely influenced when using the concentration and corresponding change of decomposed components. In the present research, a needle-plate electrode was employed to simulate the PD event of a metal protrusion insulation fault for two main characteristic components SO2F2 and SOF2, and to carry out influence analysis of trace H2O and O2 on the characteristic components. The research shows that trace H2O has the capability of catching an F atom, which inhibits low-sulfide SFx from recombining into high-sulfide SF6. Thus, the amount of SOF2 strongly correlates to the amount of trace H2O, whereas the amount of SO2F2 is weakly related to trace H2O. Furthermore, the dilution effect of trace O2 on SOF2 obviously exceeds that of SO2F2.

This paper presents the method for an estimation of discharge current waveform in short gap discharge by radiated electromagnetic fields. The method of current waveform estimation is to use the one antenna method (single field method) with a measured electric or magnetic field at given field point by a time domain antenna. In order to verify the availability of the estimation theory, the discharge current waveform estimation was performed by one antenna methods using the measured electric fields of Wilson & Ma and compared with experiments. In addition diagnosis technique for power equipments is able to prevent from large accidents by finding signs of tile accidents before they happen. From the results of the estimation of discharge current, we have a possibility for the application of insulation diagnosis technique for power equipments using S$F_6$ gas. From this point of view, this paper simulated discharge progress and partial discharge by using needle-plan electrodes system in S$F_6$, studied the distribution of frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves using a biconical antenna and a spectrum analyzer. From the experimental results of this study, according to the consideration of the mutual relation between frequency spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic waves and discharge progress, it was confirmed that detecting Partial discharge and estimating discharge progress in S$F_6$ could be Possible.

Cast-resin transformers are widely installed in various electrical power systems because of their low operating cost and low influence on external environmental factors. However, when they have an internal defect during the manufacturing process or operation, a partial discharge (PD) occurs, and eventually destroys the insulation. In this paper, a Rogowski-type PD sensor was studied to replace commercial PD sensors used for the insulation diagnosis of power apparatus. The proposed PD sensor was manufactured with four different types of PCB-based winding structures, and it was analyzed in terms of the detection characteristics for standard calibration pulses and the changes of the output voltage according to the distance. The output increased linearly in accordance with the applied discharge amount. It was confirmed that the hexagon structure sensor had the highest sensitivity, because the winding cross-sectional area of the sensor was larger than others. In addition, as the distance from the defect increased, the output voltage of the sensors decreased by 7.32% on average. It was also confirmed that the attenuation rate according to the distance decreased as the input discharge amount increased. For the application of this new type sensor, PD electrode system was designed to simulate the void defect. Waveforms and PRPD patterns measured by the proposed PD sensors at DIV and 120% of DIV were the same as the results measured by MPD 600 based on IEC 60270. The proposed PD sensors can be installed on the inner wall of the transformer tank by coating its surfaces with a non-conductive material; therefore, it is possible to detect internal defects more effectively at a closer distance from the defect than the conventional sensors.

This paper introduce to improve the reliability of the expected service life and the insulation condition evaluation of the high voltage induction motors by assessing, comparing and analyzing the correlation between the dielectric properties of the off-line insulation diagnostic test and dielectric strength on the insulation breakdown test. The insulation diagnostic tests include insulation resistance, polarization index(P.I.), dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$), maximum partial discharges($Q_{max}$) and AC breakdown test. This study evaluated the correlation between insulation diagnostic test and AC breakdown test for stator winding of high voltage induction motor. On the basis of these test results, we expect that this study can be used for effectively assessing the results of insulation diagnostic tests for similar class induction motors in service at industrial field.
