Analysis of Partial Discharge in High Voltage Motor Model Coils (고압전동기 모델 코일의 부분방전 분석)

  • Five model coils of 6.6kV motor were manufactured with several defects. These stator coils have artificial defects such as void of groundwall insulation, removal of semi-conductive coating and damage of strand insulation. Epoxy-mica coupler(80 pF) was connected to five model coil terminals, respectively The voltage applied to the coils was 3.81kV, 4.76kV, 6.0kV and 6.6kV. Partial discharge(PD) tests performed in the laboratory and shield room. Digital PD detector (PDD) and turbine generator analyzer(TGA) were used to measure PD activity. TGA summarizes each plot with two quantities such as the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the peak PD magnitude(Qm). The PD levels in pC were measured with PDD. PD patterns of model coils were indicated the internal and slot discharges. PD patterns coincide with both PDD and TGA.

  • A lot of R&D on the diagnosis of stator winding insulation for large rotating machines has been carried out since the 1970s. The on-line partial discharge measurement has proved to be an effective technique in the evaluation of the state of stator insulation in high voltage rotating machines. It is well known that if the discharge pulses propagate through the winding conductor, they are attenuated and delayed. In the present study, to investigate the attenuation and the time delay of discharge pulses through the winding conductor, a series of tests were conducted using a model coils and slot. Thus it could be concluded that while the high frequency pulse propagates in radiation or end-winding coupling modes, the low frequency one does in a series mode through the coil conductor.

  • The method of maintenance in railway is going to be changed to improve reliability on traction equipment. Partial discharge (PD) tests are useful to evaluate the insulation condition of stator winding. This paper describes the use of PD tests with 5 model coils which have the defects such as internal, slot discharge. The PD tests are performed with epoxy-mica coupler 500 pF at various AC voltages. The result of test shows PD pattern can correlate with the species of defects on 5 model coils.

Characteristics of Insulation Diagnosis and Failure in Gas Turbine Generator Stator Windings

  • In order to evaluate the insulation deterioration in the stator windings of five gas turbine generators(137 MVA, 13.8 kV) which has been operated for more than 13 years, diagnostic test and AC dielectric breakdown test were performed at phases A, B and C. These tests included measurements of AC current, dissipation factor, partial discharge (PD) magnitude and capacitance. ${\Delta}I$ and ${\Delta}tan{\delta}$ in all three phases (A, B and C) of No. 1 generator stator windings showed that they were in good condition but PD magnitude indicated marginally serviceable and bad level to the insulation condition. Overall analysis of the results suggested that the generator stator windings were indicated serious insulation deterioration and patterns of the PD in all three phases were analyzed to be internal, slot and spark discharges. After the diagnostic test, an AC overvoltage test was performed by gradually increasing the voltage applied to the generator stator windings until electrical insulation failure occurred, in order to determine the breakdown voltage. The breakdown voltage at phases A, B and C of No. 1 generator stator windings failed at 28.0 kV, 17.9 kV, and 21.3 kV, respectively. The breakdown voltage was lower than that expected for good-quality windings (28.6 kV) in a 13.8kV class generator. In the AC dielectric breakdown and diagnostic tests, there was a strong correlation between the breakdown voltage and the voltage at which charging current increases abruptly ($P_{i1}$, $P_{i2}$).

  • The aging diagnosis method using partial discharge measurement detects discharge signals that critical cause of failure in insulation material operated a long time and can diagnose aging state of insulation materials with an aging analysis algorithm. The HFPD measurement method is a technique to analyze aging state of high voltage insulation materials and detect higher frequency signals than conventional PD measurement method therefore it takes less noise effect and could execute active line measurement. It is possible to analyze main discharge phenomena and obtain access to aging progress occurred in insulation materials through accumulation of HFPD signals during determined interval and expression of fractal dimension using statistical process of accumulated signals. The HFPD signals that occurred in each applied voltages are measured during 180 cycles and accumulated to the same phase of one cycle. These patterns that made by previous method are normalized with logarithm function and than inputted to neural networks. The aging diagnosis of insulation material was possible and the recognition ratio of neural network appeared very high.

  • For the insulation design of a HTS cable, the withstand voltage of three kinds were proposed. One of them is the AC design withstand voltage, another is the impulse design withstand voltage, and the other is the partial discharge inception stress. However, the multi-layered effect was not considered on insulation design of a HTS cable at existent design process. Therefore in this paper, the electrical breakdown characteristics by multi-layered effect of LPP insulation paper were investigated. Based on these results, the insulation thickness of 22.9 kV class HTS cable was designed, and compared with existent design process.

  • This paper discusses several electrical properties of tape-type insulation impregnated with liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) in superconducting cable. Synthetic polypropylene laminated paper has been tested for its short-term breakdown strength and partial discharge(PD) characteristics under AC voltage. furthermore, the effect of winding parameter on breakdown strength, PD incepti on and extinction electrical stress with different test samples are discussed.

  • This paper presents the diagnostic method for fault prevention in metal clad switchgear(MCS) through comparison of signals before and after detecting the partial discharge using electromagnetic detection technique. Electromagnetic waves detected by antennas of the inside and outside of MCS are analyzed and compared by frequency spectrum analysis method which can estimate an insulation abnormality and normality of MCS. As a result of the experiment by the proposed method, we can detect the insulation abnormality as partial discharge in MCS and these results can be applied to preventive diagnosis of MCS.

  • This paper simulated partial discharge caused by 22.9[kV] power cable using XLPE(Peroxide Crosslinkable Polyethylene) insulation having the outside damage. As one of the insulation diagnostic method a radiated electromagnetic waves were measured by an UHF method using a BiconiLog antenna(EMCO-3142) and a spectrum analyzer used to measure EMI, EMC. From results of this study, It was confirmed that discharge Ogress were possible to be estimated by the proposed method.
