Assessment of Insulation Condition in High Voltage Motor Stator Windings (고압전동기 고정자 권선의 절연상태 평가)

  • This paper describes to access the insulation deterioration condition of the stator windings in six high voltage motors. Nondestructive tests have been carried out on stand-still motors. These tests include ac current increase rate($\Delta$I), delta tan delta(${\Delta}tan{\delta}$), and maximum partial discharge(PD). AC current and $tan{\delta}$ were measured by Schering bridge. The measurement of PD patterns were conducted using digital partial discharge detector. PD patterns were observed treeing and internal discharges in Motor 1 and 2. The stator windings of two motors were found to be in a poor condition and their were recommended to rewind. The stator. windings of four motors were judged to be in serviceable condition.

  • In order to detect of insulation problems an early, transformer has to be performed the several tests. The ac current and tan6 of transformer winding insulation were investigated by Schering bridge. Partial discharge(PD) tests are used to evaluate the insulation condition of transformer. The moisture content measurement was conducted using RVM(recovery voltage meter). The RVM test can show that the problem is affecting the paper insulation of transformer. The value of moisture content was 2.3% in main transformer. The insulations of four transformers were judged to be in good condition.

  • For hydrogen-cooled large turbine generators, partial discharges in ground wall insulations are suppressed by high hydrogen pressure. The first goal of the experiment is to investigate the effect of hydrogen pressure on partial discharge activity and aging rate in turbine generator winding insulations. A series of tests have been performed on two groups of the accelerated aging experiments. The first group of stator windings was aged under hydrogen pressure of 4 atm while the second group of stator windings was aged under air atmosphere. The stator windings aged under air atmosphere suffer from larger partial discharge magnitude with larger voids at high electrical stress than those under hydrogen pressure. The second goal of the experiment is to evaluate the validity of on-line measurement technique which is normally measured under hydrogen environment. The test results show that further experiments are needed to apply the on-line scheme to turbine generator being under high hydrogen pressure.

A Study on the Measurement of Small Partial Discharges in a Low-voltage Induction Motor (저압 유도전동기에서 미소 부분방전 측정에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we dealt with a partial discharge(PD) measurement method that has been accepted as an effective and non-destructive technique to estimate insulation performance of low-voltage electric and electronic devices. The PD measurement system Is composed of a coupling network, a low noise amplifier, and associated electronics. h shielded box Is adopted to make a better measurement environment against around noise. A low cut-off frequency of the coupling network estimated by a sinusoidal wave input was 125 kHz (-3 dB). Calibration tests on laboratory set-up have shown that the PD measurement system has a stable sensitivity of 10 mV/pC. In an application test oil a low-voltage three phase Induction motor (5 HP), we could detect 0.53 pC level of partial discharge at the applied voltage of AC 650 $V_{peak}$.

  • IGBT inverters have switching rise times of 0.2-2 $\mu$ sec, and have been believed to cause insulation stresses and premature motor failures. Inverter driven induction motors with high speed switching and advanced PWM techniques are widely used for variable speed applications. Recently, the insulation failures of stator winding have attracted many concerns due to high dv/dt of IGBT PWM inverter output. In this paper, the detailed insulation test results of 19 low-voltage induction motors are presented. Different types of insulation techniques are applied to 19 motors. The insulation characteristics are analyzed with partial discharge, discharge inception voltage, and dissipation factor tests. Also, breakdown tests by high voltage pulses are performed, and the corresponding breakdown voltages are obtained.

  • Nondestructive tests were performed on two 4.16kV motors. Epoxy-mica coupler(80pF) was connected to 4.16 kV motor stator windings. The voltage applied to the stator windings was 2.4 kV, 3.0kV, 3.5kV and 4.16kV, respectively. Digital partial discharge detector(PDD) and turbine generator analyzer(TGA) were used to measure partial discharge(PD) activity. TGA summarizes each plot with two quantities such as the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the peak PD magnitude(Qm). The PD levels in pC were measured with PDD. PD patterns of stator windings were indicated the internal discharge. PD patterns are consistent with the result of measurement using PDD and TGA.

  • During normal operation, partial discharge(PD) tests were performed using turbine generator analyzer(TGA) in high voltage motor. Epoxy-mica couplers are installed at motor terminal and analyzed PD signal using TGA. #A motor stator insulation is good because small partial discharges are detected PD pattern show that PD occurs in insulation. PD of #B motor is larger than that of #A motor and PD pattern show that positive PD larger than negative PD. It means that PD occurs between insulation and slot. And A phase PD magnitude of #B motor is large and high compare with any other phase. Therefore wedge, core and slot of #B motor need to check and repair.

  • Nondestructive tests are used to evaluate the insulation condition of stator windings in rotating machine. These tests included ac current, tan delta and maximum partial discharge. The insulation condition of stator windings was assessed by three test items. The stator windings were generally in good condition, wash, reimpregnation and rewind. It was confirmed that nondestructive tests were most useful method to indicate the insulation condition of stator windings.

  • Nondestructive and destructuve insulation tests were performed the high voltage rotating machine in the local thermal power plants. Nondestructive tests include measurements of insulation resistance. polarization index, AC current. tan$\delta$, partial discharge. Destructive tests include measurements of AC hipot and DC hipot. This paper propose to establish the insulation diagnosis cycle for high voltage rotating machine.
