To model and understand the physics of partial rub, a nonlinear rotor model is sought by applying a nonlinear parameter identification technique to the experimental data. The results show that the nonlinear terms of damping and stiffness should be included to model partial rotor rub. Especially, the impact and friction during the contact between rotor and stator are tried to explain with a nonlinear model on the basis of experimental data. The estimated nonlinear model shows good agreements between the numerical and the experimental results in its orbit. Also, the estimated nonlinear model could explain the backward whirling orbit and jump phenomenon, which are the typical phenomena of partial rub.
The fretting damage of the contact between Zircaloy-4 and Inconel 600 have Investigated. A fretting wear tester was designed to be suitable for this fretting test. In this study, the number of cycles, slip amplitude and normal load were selected as main factors of fretting wear. As the result of this research the wear volume increased with the increase of loads, slip amplitudes and the number of cycles and was more affected by slip amplitudes rather than by load. According to SEM, stick, partial slip, gross slip were observed on the surface of both specimens and wavy worn surfaces as the typical fretting damage were also Investigated due to accumulation of plastic flow.
The objective of this study is to model and simulate the nonlinear lubrication performance of the sliding part between the piston and cylinder wall in a hydrostatic swash-plate-type axial piston pump. A numerical algorithm is developed that facilitates simultaneous calculation of the rotating body motion and fluid film pressure to observe the fluid film geometry and power loss. It is assumed that solid asperity contact, so-called mixed lubrication in this study, invariably occurs in the swash-plate-type axial piston pump, which produces a higher lateral moment on the pistons than other types of hydrostatic machines. Two comparative mixed lubrication models, rigid and elastic, are used to determine the reaction force and sliding friction. The rigid model does not allow any elastic deformation in the partial lubrication area. The patch shapes, reactive forces, and virtual local elastic deformation in the partial lubrication area are obtained in the elastic contact model using a simple Hertz contact theory. The calculation results show that a higher reaction force and friction loss are obtained in the rigid model, indicating that solid deformation is a significant factor on the lubrication characteristics of the reciprocating piston part.
The sliding contact interface of machine components such as bearings, gears frequently operates in lubrication at the inception of sliding failure under high loads, speed and slip. The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. Most surface failure in sliding contact region result from frictional heat generation. However, it is difficult to measure temperature rise experimentally. So the calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has long been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. The surface temperature rise is related in contact pressure, sliding speed, material properties and lubrication thickness. Though roughness, load, ect all of the condition, are same, film thickness varies with velocity. In this study, surface temperature rise due to frictional heating in lubrication is calculated with various velocities. Surface film shearing and dry solid asperity contact are used to simulate the change of frictional heat in lubricated contact
Fretting fatigue tests were conducted to investigate the effect of contact pressure on fretting fatigue behavior in aluminum alloy A7075-T6. Test results showed that when the contact pressure is so low that gross or partial slip occurs at the pad/specimen interface, fretting fatigue damage increases with the contact pressure. However, when the contact pressure is high enough to prevent slip at the interface, fretting fatigue damage decreases with the contact pressure. In order to understand how the contact pressure influence the fretting fatigue damage, finite element analyses were conducted and the analysis results were used to evaluate critical plane fretting fatigue damage parameters and their components. It is revealed that fretting fatigue damage estimated with the parameters exhibits the same variation as that in the tests. Moreover, the variation of fretting fatigue damage is closely related with that of the maximum normal stress on the critical plane rather than the strain amplitude on the critical plane.
The purpose of this study was to investigate stresses in the various components of fixed partial dentures restoring the posterior teeth of the lower jaw, and to measure quantitatively the effects of certain modifications in structural design on the stresses in the restorations using two-dimensional photoelasticity. Two-dimensional photoelastic methods were used in this study. Several models of fixed partial dentures were constructed. Shoulder less margins and anatomic occlusal reduction were incorporated in Model 1. Rounded shoulders and flat occlusal reduction were incorporated in Model 2, while Model 3 was a cantilever fixed partial denture. Other similar fixed partial dentures were constructed with V and U notches deliverately included in the region of the fixed joints for comparative reasons. The birefringent materials used in this study were PSM-1 and PSM-5 in standard sheets. PSM-1 was used for constructing the substructure, and PSM-5 was used in making the components of the fixed partial dentures. The two materials were used in the construction of composite photoelastic models. Improved artificial stone was used to represent dental cement in luting the composite photoelastic models. Static loading procedures were used at preplanned sites to represent occlusal loads in the mouth. 35 mm color and B/W film were used to record isochromatics in accordance with photoelastic procedures. Data reduction was performed using the grid method, which helped in, the mathematical integration procedure (Shear difference method) to separate the principal stresses. The results were as follows. 1. Fixed partial dentures do not function in bending as a symmetrical beam. Alternate areas of tension and compression were demonstrated when multiple contact loading was used. 2. The weakest part in posterior fixed partial dentures is the fixed joint. 3. (1) Models I and modified Model I were loaded on the pontic using a 50 pound vertical static load. The shear stress near the posterior fixed joint in Model 1 (U notches) was+129.4 p.s.i., and at the same fixed joint in modified Model 1 (V notches) was+239.4 p.s.i. The concentration of stress in fixed joint was reduced by 50% when U notches replaced the V notches. (2) Modified Model 2 was loaded using a multiple contact loader at a total load of 125 pounds. The difference between the principal stresses (${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_2$), shear stress, at the V notches was+600 p.s.i., and at the U notches was+3l7 p.s.i. The shear stress was reduced by 50% when U notches replaced the V notches. V-grooves at the fixed joints should be avoided, and should be replaced by regular shaped U-grooves. 4. Cantilever fixed partial dentures had much higher stresses at the fixed joint than fixed partial dentures that were attached at both ends.

Static response of an elastic beam on a two-parameter tensionless foundation is investigated by assuming that the beam is symmetrically subjected to a uniformly distributed load and concentrated edge loads. Governing equations of the problem are obtained and solved by pointing out that a concentrated edge foundation reaction in addition to a continuous foundation reaction along the beam axis in the case of complete contact and a discontinuity in the foundation reactions in the case of partial contact come into being as a direct result of the two-parameter foundation model. The numerical solution of the complete contact problem is straightforward. However, it is shown that the problem displays a highly non-linear character when the beam lifts off from the foundation. Numerical treatment of the governing equations is accomplished by adopting an iterative process to establish the contact length. Results are presented in figures to demonstrate the linear and non-linear behavior of the beam-foundation system for various values of the parameters of the problem comparatively.
The conventional analysis for the numerical computation of fluid film thickness with elastic deformation of contact region. is performed by Newton-Rephson method for its 18st convergence characteristics. However, both high load and relatively low sliding velocity frequently make it impossible for Newton-Rahpson method to get both converged and stable solutions. In particular, this method cannot provide converged Solution under the condition of high load above 1.0 GPa which frequently occurs in line contact of EHL problem. Multigird multi-level method for the solver of non-linear partial differential equation including solid deformation is preferred to Newton-Rshpson method for better convergence and stability and is applied to line contact EHL behavior in this study.
Recently, diagnosis techniques have been investigated to detect a Partial Discharge associated with a dielectric material defect in a high voltage electrical apparatus, However, the properties of detection technique of Partial Discharge aren't completely understood because the physical process of Partial Discharge. Therefore, this paper analyzes the process on surface discharge of polymer insulator using wavelet transform. Wavelet transform provides a direct quantitative measure of spectral content in the time~frequency domain. As it is important to develop a non-contact method for detecting the kaolin contamination degree, this research analyzes the electromagnetic waves emitted from Partial Discharge using wavelet transform. This result experimentally shows the process of Partial Discharge as a two-dimensional distribution in the time-frequency domain. Feature extraction parameter namely, maximum and average of wavelet coefficients values, wavelet coefficients value at the point of $95\%$ in a histogram and number of maximum wavelet coefficient have used electromagnetic wave signals as input signals in the preprocessing process of neural networks in order to identify kaolin contamination rates. As result, root sum square error was produced by the test with a learning of neural networks obtained 0.00828.
