  • This study examined the sociodemographic factors, health-related habits, chronic diseases, dietary habits, and nutrient intake according to the self-rated health status in a group aged over 65 years by analyzing the nationally representative Korean survey data. A total of 1,510 subjects were analyzed among the participants of the 2016 Korean National Health and Examination Survey (KNHANES). Statistical analyses for complex samples were performed using the SPSS software package (version 19.0) The study subjects were divided into two groups (healthy group vs. unhealthy group) based on their self-rated health status. The percentage of the healthy group was 66.5%. Gender, age, education level, household income, job (P<0.001, respectively), marital status, and basic living allowance (P<0.05, respectively) were significant sociodemographic variables of the self-rated health status. Alcohol consumption (P<0.01), aerobic physical activity, stress, quality of life, not feeling very well, depression and activity restriction (P<0.001, respectively) were also significant health-related variables of the self-rated health status. Blood glucose, anemia (P<0.05, respectively), and chewing problems (P<0.001) were significant chronic disease-related variables of the self-rated health status. Adequate intakes of protein, dietary fiber, phosphorus, thiamin, niacin, vitamin C (P<0.001, respectively), calcium, sodium, potassium (P<0.01, respectively), iron, vitamin A, and riboflavin (P<0.05, respectively) were also significant variables of the self-rated health status. In complex samples multiple logistic regression analysis, the self-rated health status was influenced significantly by the aerobic physical activity (P<0.01), stress level (P<0.05), depression (P<0.001), quality of life (P<0.001), not feeling very well (P<0.001), activity restriction (P<0.001), chewing problem (P<0.05), and adequate intake of iron (P<0.05). These results suggest that activity restriction, mental health, adequate iron intake, and physical activity may be associated with the self-rated health status in the elderly.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the association between oral health status and pulmonary ventilatory defects. Methods: The 6th (2013-2015) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data was used. The study subjects were those aged 40-79 who had pulmonary function examination. Complex samples general linear model analysis, Complex samples cross-tabulation analysis, and Complex samples logistic regression analysis were conducted. Results: In terms of restrictive ventilatory defects, the study subjects (8.3%) who recognized that their oral health status was bad outnumbered those who recognized that their oral health status was good (6.1%) (p<0.05). Many of the study subjects who experienced difficulty in biting, chewing and/or speech, and who had an unhealthy periodontal had restrictive ventilatory defects and obstructive ventilatory defects (p<0.05). The association between oral health status and pulmonary ventilatory defects was analyzed. The findings showed that those who had unhealthy periodontal had a 1.33 times higher probability of pulmonary ventilatory defects than those who had a healthy periodontal (p<0.05). After taking into account general characteristics (age, sex, incomes, education, and smoking) of the subjects, the association between oral health status and pulmonary ventilatory defects was analyzed. The result found that only in cases where one experienced dental caries was an association with pulmonary ventilatory defects found. In other words, those who had dental caries showed a 0.73 times higher probability of pulmonary ventilatory defects than those who had no dental caries (p<0.05). Conclusions: Based on the findings of this research, oral health status was found to be associated with pulmonary ventilatory defects. To improve oral health, it is necessary to provide life-cycle stages based oral health education. Therefore, it is required to develop an oral health education program and develop a national oral health policy.

  • Purpose. This study was conducted to analyze fatigue and subjective oral health status in the employees in educational institutions and provide basic data for the development of a program for the promotion of oral health. Methods. As for the subjects, this study conducted a survey with 468 educational personnel in elementary, middle, and high schools in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk area from March through June 2016 and utilized 407 copies finally. As for the items on the survey, this study conducted an investigation on their general characteristics, fatigue, and subjective oral health status(halitosis, xerostomia, temporomandibular disorder) with the self-administered method. With the data collected, this study conducted frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis, using SPSS 20.0 statistical program, and the statistical significance level was .05. Results. As a result of this study, it turned out that by sex, fatigue was higher in women(4.59 points); by the place of work, those in 'elementary school' had higher fatigue(4.59 points); and by health condition and oral health status, most of them responded that they were 'not healthy'(4.81 and 4.84 points, respectively) and there was a statistically significant difference (p<.05). As for the correlation between fatigue and subjective oral health status, there were positive(+) impacts on halitosis(=.248, p<.001), xerostomia(=.097, p<.05), and temporomandibular disorder(=.148, p<.01), so it turned out that there was a correlation between fatigue and subjective oral health status. Conclusion. Based on the result of an analysis of the impacts of the fatigue level on subjective oral health status, it is judged that it would be necessary to continue to build up a program that can promote the oral health status of the educational personnel. In addition, it is necessary to conduct studies continuously for the development and application of a program for the change in lifestyle and behavior that can lower their fatigue.

  • Purpose: This study examined whether there is a relationship between smoking and health behavior and the status of cigarette or e-cigarette smoking adolescents. Methods: This study, as secondary analysis research, used the raw data from the 14th Korea youth risk behavior survey 2018. The data were analyzed by frequency analysis, Rao-Scott 𝑥2-test, and logistic regression analysis. Results: Differences in gender, economic levels, and the educational levels of mothers were observed between cigarette smoking and e-cigarette smoking adolescents. The relationship between smoking and health behavior and status was examined by comparing cigarette and e-cigarette smoking. The results showed that the ratio of e-cigarettes was relatively higher in adolescents who have substance experiences. In contrast, cigarette smoking was related to drinking and perceived lack of sleep. Conclusion: This study suggests that it is necessary to develop healthy behavior that is strongly related to the smoking types of adolescents and health promotion programs.

  • Background: The cancer survival rate in Korea has substantially increased, necessitating the management of not only patients with cancer but also longer term survivors. Although the divorce rate has drastically increased in Korea, there is not sufficient research regarding the relationship between changes in marital status and quality of life (QOL) in cancer patients and survivors. Thus, we aimed to examine the relationship between marital status and QOL in such cases. Materials and Methods: This study was performed using the Community Health Survey of 2008 administered by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (N=169,328). We used t-tests and Chi-square tests to compare demographic variables between men and women, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare QOL scores among comparison groups. We also performed a multilevel analysis on the relationship between QOL and marital status while accounting for provincial differences. Results: Decline of EuroQOL five dimensions (EQ-5D) in single patients with cancer was greater than in any other marital status group, but there was no statistically significant decline in survivors of cancer with regard to marital status. In the general population, the decline of EQ-5D was higher among single people than married people. Using the EuroQOL visual analog scale (EQ-VAS), single people had higher values than those of other marital status among both patients with cancer and survivors of cancer. In the general population, EQ-VAS values were higher for single people compared to married people. Conclusions: There may be a significant relationship between marital status and QOL in cancer patients and survivors. Policy interventions to manage patients with cancer who experience a decline in QOL as well as marital problems should be conducted.
