  • The purpose of this study is to examine the reusability of the fluff pulp recycled from paper diaper. To do this, the physical and optical properties of each handsheet made from these fluff pulp sample as well as the properties of the fiber recycled from paper diaper were analyzed and compared with those of non-recycled diaper fluff pulp samples and conventional pulp samples. These comparisons show that the characteristics of fiber such as length, width, curl, kink of the pulp recycled from paper diaper were similar to those of non-recycled diaper fluff pulp as well as to those of commercial pulp. The fine content of recycled diaper fluff pulp was lower than that of other pulp samples, while the ash content of the former was higher than that of the latter. Furthermore, it was also found that the bulk of handsheets made from the recycled fluff pulp was higher than that of other pulp samples, while the formation of the former was worse than that of the latter. The mechanical properties of the handsheet sample made from the recycled diaper fluff pulp was higher than those of the unused diaper fluff pulp and was lower that those of commercial fluff pulp and softwood tissue pulp handsheet. But, it was higher than that of hardwood tissue pulp handsheet. The optical properties of recycled diaper fluff pulp handsheet was lower than those of each handsheet samples made from other pulps due to its low fine content.

  • Formation which is an indicator of nonuniformity in fiber distribution is concerned with small scale variation in roughness, optical properties, print density, and so on. This study evaluated the formation of sheets which were made usning handsheet former and paper-machine with hydraulic headbox. Optical method and ${\beta}-ray$ method were used for formation test. The fiber type, freeness and basis weight of sheet were considered as variables. The formation of handsheet was affected by fiber type and freeness, and floe size distribution was influenced by basis weight. For machine made sheet, its formation seemed to be dependent on the hydraulic forces in headbox and former. When two formation test methods were compared, there was the highest relationship between optical formation index and normalized standard deviation from ${\beta}-ray$ method.

  • This study was carried out to investgate the possiblity of using waste bamboo and bast fiber from paper mulberry for Hwaseonji production. 3 types of Hwaseonji were made in an experimental system, 100% bamboo pulp, bamboo pulp mixed with bast fiber in two different ratios, 70% : 30% and 40% : 60%, respectively. The result were as follows: 1. The chinese ink blots of Hwaseonji made from bamboo pulp only was satisfactory, but its tensile strength showed a low value. In order to improve the tensile strength, we must develope a new beating method with musilige. 2. The burst strength increased as the bast fiber content increased. But it is a special characteristic of Hwaseonji, that an even formation of paper is required. Therefore, only the short bast fiber is needed. 3. The tensile strength was raised by increasing the bast fiber content to 60%, resulting in a more durable Hwaseonji. 4. In even thickness, the higher opacity showed the more bast fiber. So the opacity of product III (bamboo: 40%, bast fiber: 60%) is the highest. 5. The commodity value of hand-made paper should be grade-up after a dedusting process.

  • This paper proposes a software tool MADE that is useful to develop a practical Korean morphological analyzer. A morphological analysis is performed by using adjacency conditions provided by a morphological dictionary. This means that developing a morphological analyzer is reduced merely to constructing a morphological dictionary. No programming skill is required in this process, MADE provides with useful functions that facilitate the construction of a dictionary. Once a dictionary is constructed, the morphological analysis engine embedded in MADE may be used as a stand-alone morphological analyzer or be integrated into an application software which requires a Korean morphological analysis module.

  • The buddhistic painting of Song-Kwang temple in Seungjoo-gun, Chonnam, Korea is not known in chronicle, but it could be estimated to works in the early 19th century through it's remaining records and qualities of materials. And it was analysed the qualities of materials consisting of pigment layer, silken-ground layer and support layer in order to preserve buddhistic painting, made back-adherent paper of the support layer proper to it, tested its compatibility, and then concluded as follows. 1. The section structures of buddhistic painting is consisted of the pigment layer, silken-ground layer of silk and the support layer of Korean hand made paper, it could be recognized that buddhistic painting in 19th century was basically composed of the pigment layer, the silken-ground layer and the support layer. Moreover the pigment layer and the silken-ground layer got adhered with glue, and sheets of support layers got back adhered with paste. 2. The support layer of buddhistic painting consisted of 5 layers and two kinds of paper were used for them. The first and second layers were composed of Korean hand made paper made of pure paper mulberry bast fibers, and the rest of them of paper that paper mulberry bast fibers were mixed into recycled hemp fibers. Though it is difficult to assert without the security of more data, finding out the then situation through the qualities of materials, it was presumed that the society in 19th century was suffered from economical difficulties and the operation of the paper industry of temples was rather difficult and so low-qualitative recycled hemp fibers might used for back-adherent paper. 3. Considering tension between silken-ground layers and support layers of this materials, newly made back-adherent paper was used for repair, and then I could conform that it was proper to back-adherent paper for repair.

  • This study was carried out to explore the availability of seedling pots made from paper mill sludge using red pepper species called Nokkwang. The seedling pots were made by several conditions such as different mixing ratios between sludge and old newspaper (ONP), sterilizing treatment and latex coating. After 30 day cultivation in a green house, the growth condition of the red peppers was evaluated by comparison with those raised in the plastics seedling pots. The red peppers in the plastics pot showed a better growth than those in the sludge pots. Sterilizing treatment, latex coating and different mixing ratios between paper sludges and ONP did rarely affect a growth rate of the plant and the contents of inorganic elements. However, latex coating contributed to protection of physical structure of the sludge pots in spite of constant water feeding. Even though some inorganic elements from the sludge pots migrated into the bed soils, electronic conductivity of the bed soils was within the proper range for the plant growth. Finally it was confirmed that the seedling pots made from paper mill sludges could be used to cultivate horticultural plants as the alternative to the plastics pots.

  • Effect of calendering on structural and surface properties of sheets made of various pulp was investigated. BKP, BCTMP and KOCC were used as raw materials for handsheets and sheets were calendered at the different calendering temperature and pressure conditions. Caliper, air permeability, and PPS roughness were reduced by calendering, but their effects were a little different depending on pulp type and calendering condition. Increase of density with increase of calendering Pressure was remarkable on sheet made of BCTMP or KOCC, and the effect of temperature was more significant than pressure. PPS roughness of sheet made of BCTMP or KOCC was reduced by calendering, but BKP sheet showed little reduction of roughness at higher calendering pressure. The compressibility of sheet increased logarithmetically with calendering pressure and surface compressibility of KOCC sheet was relatively higher than other pulps.

  • This paper provides a novel solution for thick-walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials (FGMs). In the formulation, the cylinder is divided into N layers. On the individual layer, the Young's modulus is assumed to be a constant. For an individual layer, two undetermined constants are involved in the elastic solution. Those undetermined coefficients can be evaluated from the continuation condition along interfaces of layers and the boundary conditions at the inner surface and outer surface of cylinder. Finally, the solution for thick-walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials is obtainable. This paper provides several numerical examples which are useful for engineer to design a cylinder made of FGMs.
