In the present work, we selected a polymer, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), as an additive to improve the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation properties of Mg. 95 wt% Mg + 5 wt% PVDF (designated Mg-5PVDF) samples were prepared via milling in hydrogen atmosphere (reactive milling), and the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation characteristics of the prepared samples were compared with those of Mg milled in hydrogen atmosphere. The dehydrogenation of magnesium hydride formed in the as-prepared Mg-5PVDF during reactive milling began at 681 K. In the fourth cycle (n=4), the initial hydrogenation rate was 0.75 wt% H/min and the quantity of hydrogen absorbed for 60 min, $H_a$ (60 min), was 3.57 wt% H at 573 K and in 12 bar $H_2$. It is believed that after reactive milling the PVDF became amorphous. The milling of Mg with the PVDF in hydrogen atmosphere is believed to have produced defects and cracks. The fabrication of defects is thought to ease nucleation. The fabrication of cracks is thought to expose fresh surfaces, resulting in an increase in the reactivity of the particles with hydrogen and a decrease in the diffusion distances of hydrogen atoms. As far as we know, this investigation is the first in which a polymer PVDF was added to Mg by reactive milling to improve the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation characteristics of Mg.

The 23 wt% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/15 wt% polyurethane (PU) fibers were electrospun using the conjugated nozzle at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/h and an electric field of 1 kV/cm. The formation of ${\beta}$ crystal phase in the PVDF and the PVDF/PU fibers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. After electrospinning, the asspun fibers were immersed in a boiling water and then dried at $100^{\circ}C$ in a convection oven to make a crimp phenomenon. The crimps with a diameter of $2.0{\pm}0.08{\mu}m$ were observed for the PVDF/PU fibers after hydrothermal treatment without sacrificing the extent of ${\beta}$ crystal phase. All the PU, PVDF and PVDF/PU fibers exhibited average cell viability of more than 98 %. The cell proliferation results suggested that L-929 cells adhered well to the PU, PVDF and PVDF/PU fibers and proliferated continuously with increasing time, indicating that the PVDF/PU fibers are highly applicable to the biomedical applications.
Sleep diseases such as snoring and sleep apnea are physically, mentally harmful and results serious health problems. Snoring, known as breathing noise, is caused by coupled oscillation of the airway when the air passes through the trachea, and sleep apnea is caused by upper airway blockage. In order to solve these problems, many attempts have been made to detect the snoring during sleep and alleviate it. In this study, a new sensing system and analysis algorithm were developed in order to detect snoring sounds correctly under various sleep environments. Two polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) vibration sensors were used inside the pillow. The first PVDF sensor detects vibration transmitted through skull caused by snoring. And the second PVDF sensor detects both snoring sounds and ambient noises. The signals of two sensors were acquired through the designed analog circuits, and analyzed for snoring detection. Ten volunteers were participated for the experiment under five different conditions. Data from two PVDF sensors were processed by the established analysis algorithm, and snoring sounds were compared to noises. The results indicated that the energy of snoring is 70% bigger than that of ambient noise, which proves effectiveness of sensing system and analysis algorithm. Further study would be continued for more wide clinical studies with various environment noises. Based on this study, development of anti-snore pillow and sleep monitoring system for comfort sleep could be developed.
For the purpose of introducing hydrophilic function to pristine PVDF, pristine PVDF was modified under atmosphere and aqueous vapor by irradiating electron beam (EB). EB dose was varied from 0 to 125 K Gray, respectively. Their changes of chemical composition /structure were observed and evaluated by FT-IR, EDS and DSC. Also, their surface behaviors were evaluated by contact angle. In FT-IR study, it was confirmed that hydroxyl functions were introduced to pristine PVDF. In EDS analysis, mole ratio of F (fluoride) was almost constant (about 33%) in spite of increasing EB dose, meaning that hydroxyl function was introduced via dehydrozenation, not via deflurodination. In DSC study, $T_g$ increased with increasing EB dose, which was reconfirmed that hydroxyl function was introduced via dehydrozenation. $T_m$ increased with increasing EB dose, inferring that the increase in EB dose led to more outbreak of hydroxyl function which led to more enhanced hydrogen bond. In the result of contact angle, pristine PVDF film was $62^{\circ}$ and 125 K Gray-irradiated PVDF film was even $13^{\circ}$. All results showed that pristine PVDF was successfully changed to hydrophilic PVDF.
Two polymer precursors, polyvinylidene chloride-resin (PVDC-resin) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), are assembled into the microporous carbon by pyrolysis. Microporous carbon is advantageous as an electrode for supercapacitors that store electric charges through ion adsorption/desorption. The pyrolysis also turns the various heteroatoms of two precursors into functional groups, contributing to the additional charge storage. The analysis of the porous structure and function group during carbonization are important to develop the carbon for energy storage. Here, we analyzed the functional groups of two polymer-derived carbons through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of the functional groups were explored in various pH electrolytes. The specific capacitance of two carbons in the acidic electrolyte (1 M H2SO4) was improved compared to that in the neutral electrolyte (0.5 M Na2SO4) due to the faradaic charge/discharge reaction of the quinone functional group. In particular, the carbon electrode derived from PVDC-resin exhibits a lower capacity than the carbon from PVDF due to the small micropores. In the alkaline electrolyte (6 M KOH), the highest specific capacitance and rate capability were obtained among the three electrolytes for both electrodes based on the facile adsorption of the constituent electrolyte ions (K+, OH-).
The porous support polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with a salting out based on the hollow fiber membrane polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polyvinylsulfonic acid (PVSA) by coating with by phase separated and pressurization (PSP) method to produce a multilayer membrane. The resulting membranes were characterized under the various conditions, such as the heat treatment temperature, coating concentration, feed concentration, cross-linking time and cross-link agent concentration in terms of flux and rejection rate for NaCl 100 ppm solution at 4 atm. The best results were PEI 20,000 ppm and PVSA 1,000 ppm, PEI 15% with a 2% malic acid aqueous solution coated by PSP method the hollow fiber membrane heat-treated for 1 minute showed flux 24.3 LMH, the rejection of 82.1%.
In this research, the application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane was tested as a simply and beginning attempt to overcome membrane fouling because CNTs importantly affect the transport of natural organic matter (NOM). Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) as the representative of NOM was selected and its sorption results with single-walled CNT (SWCNT), multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), and oxidized MWCNT (O-MWCNT) were obtained through the batch experiment. SRFA sorption isotherms had a strong nonlinearity and its sorption capacity followed the order O-MWCNT < MWCNT < SWCNT. The adsorbed mass of SRFA on each CNT decreased as a function of pH due to their charge repulsion. For the CNT-PVDF membrane filtration experiments, the suspended CNT solution (10 mg/40 mL) was incorporated into $0.45{\mu}m$-PVDF membrane and 5 mg/L of SRFA solution was monitored using UV detector connected with high pressure pump after passing through CNT-PVDF membrane. The SRFA removal efficiency by MWCNT-PVDF membrane was the strongest among other modified membranes. This suggests that the CNT modified microfiltration (MF) membrane might effectively and selectively apply to treat the contaminated water including organic compounds in the presence of NOM.

In this study, the $\beta$-Polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) thin films were fabricated by physical vapor deposition method. Also, the properties of dielectric relaxation were studied to understand carrier's behavior of PVDF thin films, to be regarded as the excellent piezo and pyroelectricity. In the process of vapor deposition, the $\beta$-PVDF thin films have been fabricated under the condition of the substrate temperature at 3$0^{\circ}C$, the applied electric field at 142.8kV/cm and the pressure at 2.0${\times}10^{-5}$torr. The dielectric properties of PVDF have been studied in the frequency range 10Hz to 1MHz at temperature from 30 to $100^{\circ}C$. The relative dielectric constant of $\alpha$ and $\beta$-PVDF were 6.8 and 9.8, respectively, under a frequency of 1kHz. Such a phenomenon was caused by the decrease in intermolecular forces originated by the phase-transition from the TGTG' molecular conformation to the TT planar zig-zag conformation. And the relative dielectric constant is increased as a measuring temperature increases, because of the reduction of relaxation time caused by the decrease of intermolecular force.
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a representative polymer with the piezoelectric property has been studied since the 1960s. Crystalline structure of poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymer is composed of five different crystal structure of the polymer as a semi-crystalline. Among the various crystal structures, ${\beta}-type$ crystal exhibits a piezoelectricity because the permanent dipoles are aligned in one direction. Generally ${\beta}-form$ crystal structure can be obtained through the transformation of the ${\alpha}-form$ crystal structure by the stretching and it can increase the amount through the after treatment as poling process after stretching. ${\beta}-form$ crystal structure the PVDF fibers produced by wet spinning is formed through a diffusion mechanism of a polar solvent in the coagulation bath. However, it has a disadvantage that the diffusion path of the solvent remains as pores in the fiber because the fiber solidification occurs simultaneously with the diffusion of the polar solvent. These pores play a role in reducing effect of poling process owing to effect of disturbances acting on the polarization by the electric field. In this work, the drying method using the microwave was introduced to remove more effectively the residual solvent and the pore within PVDF fibers produced through wet-spinning process and piezoelectric PVDF fibers was produced by transformation of the remaining ${\alpha}$ form crystal structure into ${\beta}-crystal$ structure through the stretching process.
In this study, the nanofiltration (NF) composite membranes for the low pressure use were prepared using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane as a supporter. Poly styrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were coated onto the PVDF membrane by both layer-by-layer and salting-out methods. To characterize the prepared NF membranes in terms of the flux and salt rejection, 100 mg/L feed solutions of NaCl, $MgCl_2$, and $CaSO_4$ were used at the flow rate of 1 L/min and the operating pressure of 2 bar at room temperature. The NF membranes coated with 20,000 ppm PSSA (ionic strength 1.0) solution for 3 minutes and then 30,000 ppm (ionic strength 0.1) solution for 1 minute were observed the best performance. The permeability and salt rejection were 38.5 LMH, 57.1% for NaCl, 37.9 LMH and 90.2% for $MgCl_2$ and 32.4 LMH and 54.6% for $CaSO_4$, respectively.
