Depositions of Egg Capsules by Female Shell Heights and Comparisons of Sizes at 50% of Group Sexual Maturities of the Female Rapa Whelk Rapana venosa in Three Different Salinity Concentration Regions

  • We investigated fecundities in egg capsules and sizes at 50% of group sexual maturities in female Rapana venosa in three different salinity concentration regions (S-1, S-2, and S-3). In three different salinities, egg capsule heights, the number of egg capsules and the number of eggs and embryos were remarkably increased with the increase of female shell heights (or ages) and also increased with the increase of salinity concentrations. Heights of egg capsules, the number of egg capsules and fecundities (the number of eggs and embryos) were the maximum at S-1 (Gwangyang Bay (average 31.5 psu)) and the minimum at S-3 (the upper reaches of Seomjin River (average 15.5 psu)). Total numbers of fecundities of R. venosa $individual^{-1}year^{-1}$ were about $1{\times}10^6$ at S-1 region, about $8{\times}10^5$ at S-2 region, and about $2{\times}10^5$ at S-3 region. Rates (50%) of individuals reaching first sexual maturities in three different salinity regions (S-1, S-2 and S-3) were over 50% in females measuring 7.1-8.0 cm in shell height (considered to be two years old), and 100% in those > 10.1 cm (considered to be five years old). Biological minimum sizes ($RM_{50}$) in females in three different regions are 72.0 mm SH at S-1 region, 70.9 mm SH at S-2 region, and 74.6 mm SH at S-3 region, respectively. Exceptionally, smaller individuals (considered to be one year old) were participated in reproduction.

Effects of Water Temperature and Salinity on the Egg and Larval of Chub Mackerel Scomber japonicus (고등어 Scomber japonicus 난발생 및 자어에 미치는 수온, 염분의 영향)

  • We studied the effects of temperature and salinity on the egg development and hatching rate of chub mackerel Scomber japonicus under laboratory culturing condition. The fertilized eggs were transparent, spherical, separate in shape and turned out to be separately and floated, and they contained one oil globule. Fertilized eggs are $0.91{\sim}1.33\;mm$ in diameter. The time of egg development was positively proportional to water temperature with 70 hrs, 48 hrs, 42 hrs, 34 hrs, after fertilization in $16^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $24^{\circ}C$, $28^{\circ}C$, respectively. Hatching rate was highest with the range of $20{\sim}24^{\circ}C$ and $33{\sim}35\;psu$. The relation between the time of egg development (t: hour) and water temperature (T:$^{\circ}C$) was represented by the mathematical formulae. The mean biological minimum temperature was $6.9^{\circ}C$.

Freshwater Ecosystem (Mulkol) and Periphytic Algal Biomass in the Tok Island, Korea (독도의 담수환경 (물골)과 부착조류 생물량)

  • This study was conducted to introduce the characteristics of the freshwater environment of Mulkol, considering that it is less known area about the ecosystem of the Tok Island. The salinity of freshwater in the Mulkol was less than 2.0 psu, while its periphytic algal biomass was thriving with 25.9 ${\mu}g\;chl-a/cm^2$. As for the nutrients in water, the content of $NH_4$ was higher than the rest of inorganic nitrogen components, and SRP and SRSi were much higher as 117.3 ${\mu}$g P/l and 4,104.6 ${\mu}$g Si/l respectively, than nitrogen components. Also, the ratio of N/P was found less than 1.0, revealing the condition that N was greatly limited. The high level of nutrient concentration and periphytic algal biomass at the Mulkol ecosystem could be explained as a result of natural pollution, but no full explanation was made in this study. It is a question that needs additional research in the future.

Population Dynamics of Jellyfish Aurelia aurita (s.l.) in Sihwa Lake (시화호에서 보름달물해파리 Aurelia aurita (s.l.)의 개체군변동)

  • We investigated the population dynamics of Aurelia aurita in Sihwa Lake from April to October in 2009. Salinity ranged from 5.9 to 30.7 psu at the surface. Abundance of mesozooplankton ranged from 3 to 111,874 indiv. $m^{-3}$. Ephyrae occurred from April to May with the peak in abundance occurring on 17 April. Maximum density of ephyrae was observed near the power transmission towers that are known to be habitats of polyps. Mortality of ephyrae was lower than in other areas because of the abundant prey concentration and the absence of predators. Young medusae occurred from April to July with the peak in abundance occurring on 8 May. Adult medusae occurred from May to July with the peak in abundance on 25 June and they disappeared before the rainy season. Planula occurred only in May and June with the peak in abundance on 25 June. Growth rates of Aurelia aurita ranged from -0.06 to 0.34 $d^{-1}$, and decreased rapidly after May. The period in which adult medusa occurred was restricted, compared with those in other area in Korea (e.g., Masan Bay) and Japan (e.g., Tokyo Bay). In the period of this study, the available food was limited in June and salinity decreased to ca. 20 psu in May because of the beginning of the wet season. We assumed that the exceptionally short period of occurrence of the medusa may be a response of adults to changes in temperature, salinity or food limitation which leads to the precocious maturation of young medusa and the release of planula and that the brief occurrence of medusa was caused by an abrupt decrease in activity after the release of planula.

Analysis of Pollutant Loads and Physical Oceanographic Status at the Developing Region of Deep Sea Water in East Sea, Korea (동해 심층수 개발해역의 오염부하량 해석과 해황변동)

  • This study, as a basic study for establishing a influence forecasting/estimating model when drain the deep sea water to the ocean after using it, carried out studies as follows; 1) estimating the amount of river discharge and pollutant loads inflowing into the developing region of deep sea water in East Sea, Korea 2) a field observation of tidal current, vertical distribution of water temperature and salinity, and 3-D numerical experiment of tidal current to analysis physical oceanographic status. The amount of river discharge flowing into the study area was estimated about $462.6{times}10^{3}m^{3}/day$ of daily mean in 2002 year. annual mean pollutant load of COD, TN and TP were estimated 7.02 ton-COD/day, 4.06 ton-TN/day and 0.39 ton/day, respectively. Field observation of tidal current results usually show about $20{\sim}40cm/sec$ of current velocity at the surface layer, it indicated a tendency that the current velocity decreases under 20cm/sec as the water depth increases. We could find a stratification within approximately the depth of 30m in field observation area, and the depth increases. We could find a stratification within approximately the depth of 30m in field observation area, and the differences of water temperature and salinity between the surface layer and bottom layer were about $18^{\circ}C$ and 0.8 psu, respectively. On the other hand, we found that there was a definite as the water mass of deep sea water about 34 psu of salinity.

Nitrogen allocation of Gracilaria tikvahiae grown in urbanized estuaries of Long Island Sound and New York City, USA: a preliminary evaluation of ocean farmed Gracilaria for alternative fish feeds

  • The red seaweed, Gracilaria tikvahiae McLachlan, was cultivated in open water farms in urbanized estuaries of Long Island Sound (26-30 psu of salinity) and New York City (20-25 psu), USA in 2011. Plants were harvested monthly from summer (August, $24^{\circ}C$) to fall (November, $13^{\circ}C$) and analyzed for total nitrogen, protein, and amino acid content. On a dry matter (DM) basis, nitrogen and protein significantly increased over the harvest period until October and then plateaued. Nitrogen increased from $22{\pm}1g\;kg^{-1}$ DM in August to $39{\pm}3g\;kg^{-1}$ DM in October (p < 0.001). Protein increased from $107{\pm}13g\;kg^{-1}$ DM in August to $196{\pm}5g\;kg^{-1}$ DM in November (p < 0.001). With two exceptions, amino acid concentrations expressed on a crude protein (CP) basis were similar over the harvest period. Essential amino acids accounted for $48{\pm}1%$ of all amino acids present with lysine and methionine averaging $56{\pm}2g\;kg^{-1}$ CP and $18{\pm}1g\;kg^{-1}$ CP, respectively. Histidine was underrepresented among essential amino acids and averaged $13{\pm}1g\;kg^{-1}$ CP. Taurine ranged from 2.1 to $3.2g\;kg^{-1}$ DM. With its moderate levels of lysine, methionine and taurine, ocean farmed G. tikvahiae has the potential of overcoming many nutrient deficiencies currently associated with terrestrial plant ingredients in alternative feeds for fish and shrimp.

Phytoplankton as Standard Test Species for Marine Ecotoxicological Evaluation (해양생태독성평가를 위한 표준시험생물로서의 식물플랑크톤에 관한 연구)

  • A series of experiments was conducted to identify the potential of five phytoplankton species as standard test species for marine ecotoxicological tests. The candidate phytoplankton species are Skeletonema costatum, Heterosigma akashiwo, Prorocentrum micans, Isochrysis galbana, and Tetraselmis suecica. Salinity tolerance and sensitivity on potassium dichromate as a reference material were identified. Toxicity of eleven ocean dumped sewage sludges and four red tide expellent extracts were estimated by the inhibition of population growth rates (PGR) of marine diatom S. costatum, While most species revealed relatively weak tolerance on salinity, T. suecica demonstrated the highest salinity tolerance ranged from $5\~35$ psu and the others $15\~35$ psu. H. akashiwo revealed the highest sensitivity as 72h $IC_{50}$=0.76mg/L and T. suecica the lowest as 72h $IC_{50}$=8.89mg/L on potassium dichromate. Sludge extracts from industrial waste, domestic sewage and livestock farm waste sludge showed high toxicity as 72h $IC_{50}$<$2\%$ and lowest toxicity from filtration bed sludge as 72h $IC_{50}$=$30.50\%$ NOEC (No Observed Effective Concentration) of sludge extract ranged from <$0.4\%$ to $1.6\%$ and this indicated high phytotoxicity of ocean dumped sewage sludge. The test sensitivity of phytoplankton PGR inhibition was much higher than those of marine rotifer Brachionus plicatilis mortality test and bioluminescent inhibition test by marine bacteria Vibrio fischeri, and comparable with the sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus intermedius) fertilization test. As a result the phytotoxicity test using phytoplankton PGR inhibition ($IC_{50}$) must be a useful tool for marine phyto-toxicological evaluation of ocean dumped materials.

Effects of Irradiance on the Growth of the Toxic Dinoflagellates Alexandrium tamarense and Alexandrium catenella (유독와편모조류 Alexandrium tamarense와 Alexandrium catenella의 성장에 미치는 조도의 영향)

  • The effects of irradiance on the growth of toxic dinoflagellates Alexandrium tamarense (Masan Bay strain) and Alexandrium catenella (Jinhae Bay strain) were investigated in the laboratory. At $15^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu for A. tamarense and $25^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu for A. catenella, the irradiance-growth curve showed the maximum growth rate (${\mu}_{max}$) of 0.31 $day^{-1}$ with half-saturation photon flux density (PFD) ($K_I$) of 44.53 ${\mu}molm^{-2}s^{-1}$, and a compensation PFD ($I_c$) was 20.67 ${\mu}molm^{-2}s^{-1}$ for A. tamarense, and ${\mu}_{max}$ of 0.38 $day^{-1}$ with $K_I$ of 59.53 ${\mu}molm^{-2}s^{-1}$, and $I_c$ was 40.80 ${\mu}molm^{-2}s^{-1}$ for A. catenella. The $I_c$ equated to a depth of 8~9 m from March to June for A. tamarense and 6~7 m from March to June for A. catenella. These responses suggested that irradiance at the depth near the middle layer in Masan Bay would provide favorable conditions for two species.

A Study on Optimization of Manufacture Conditions for Water Treatment Membrane by Using Electrospinning Method (전기방사법을 이용한 수처리용 막 제조 조건 최적화 연구)

  • In this study, nano fibers with various physical properties were materialized by using a variety of polymers [PAN (Polyacrylonitrile), PU (Polyuretane), PSU (Polysulfone)] which are raw materials of dope solution manufactured for electrospinning and solvents [NMP (N-methyl-2 pyrrolidone), DMF (Dimethylformamide)] and evaluated characteristics of their flux and SS (Suspended Solids) separation and then ascertained application of manufactured fibers as separation membrane for water treatment. In this study, analysis of surface of manufactured material was carried out through SEM analysis to ascertain the cause of flux and SS separation performance by checking diameter, uniformity and straightness of fiber. If additive is used in manufacturing nano fiber water treatment separation membrane, it is expected to solve problems such as membrane fouling and mechanical strength and to be used as basic factor for manufacturing separation membrane with catalyst function added.

Spatial Distributions of Macrozoobenthic Communities in the Seomjin River Estuary (섬진강 하구역에 서식하는 대형저서동물군집의 분포양상)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the spatial distributions of the macrobenthic communities in the Seomjin River estuary from May, 2015 to May, 2016. The number of species was 163, the mean density was $1,865ind.m^{-2}$, biomass was $204g{\cdot}wet\;m^{-2}$ during this study period. The highest number of species and density appeared among polychaetes whereas the most biomass was contributed by mollusks due to the presence of Corbicula japonica in every season. The study area was divided into 3 regions with similar benthic fauna responding to the gradient of the salinity. Praxillella praetermissa was the dominant species in regions of over 30 psu during all seasons. C. japonica and Hediste diadroma were dominant in the upper regions of the Seomjin River where the salinity was less than 10 psu. Heteromastus filiformis showed the broadest distributional range and dominated in all seasons except for the most upper stream at st. 7. From the result of the Bio-Env analysis, salinity was the most important environmental factor affecting the formation of macrobenthic communities in the study area, and salinity and TOC were the highest contributors to the macrobenthic communities. From the correlation analysis between major dominant species and environmental factors, C. japonica, Prionospio japonica and H. diadroma showed a negative correlation with salinity, while P. praetermissa and Scolectoma longifolia showed a positive correlation. H. filiformis was little affected by salinity but showed a positive correlation with TOC or silt content of sediment.
