  • Most wells developed in Jeju island before the enactment of the Groundwater Management Ordinance in 2002 are vulnerable to aquifer contamination due to inflow of upper groundwater having the high concentration of nitrate nitrogen, likely due to incomplete grouting in upper section of the wells. Although these wells require entire reinstallation, it is often necessary to rehabilitate the existing wells due to various constraints. Therefore, to identified the inflow section of contaminants, the thermal level sensor (TLS) technique was firstly applied for three wells, which enables to monitor temperature variations in every 50 cm depth. Then, the grouting material was injected to the upper section to prevent the inflow of upper contaminated groundwater into the entire aquifer. By applying TLS technique, it was found that the temperature deviations in the upper groundwater inflow section decreased sharply. Moreover, both the change in the concentration of nitrate nitrogen in the rainy/dry seasons and the average concentrations were found to decrease rapidly after grouting material injection. Consequently, the application of TLS proposed in the study turned out to be appropriate to prevent aquifer contamination.

  • The vertical shaft of a selective intake structure, which is constructed in a large reservoir, is required to be impermeable and to employ a grouting technology to prevent water inflow from the reservoir or surrounding ground. In this study, groundwater inflow is estimated using a numerical model for two cases (i.e., grouting or non-grouting cases at the exterior of a vertical shaft) and compared with data measured during an excavation at the construction site of a selective intake structure in the Soyang reservoir, Korea. Groundwater inflow is estimated to range from 444 to 754 $m^3/d$ in the case of non-grouting and from 58 to 95 $m^3/d$ in the case of grouting. The groundwater inflow measured in a vertical shaft, which ranges from 30 to 100 $m^3/d$, is similar to the simulated amount. It is recommended that before the excavation of a shaft, water inflow is estimated using a numerical model and a grouting test to ensure excavation stability and improve excavation efficiency.

  • The dam reservoir inflow prediction is utilized to ensure for water supply and prevent future droughts. In this study, we predicted the dam reservoir inflow and analyzed how seasonal weather forecasting affected the accuracy of the inflow for even multi-purpose dams. The hindcast and forecast of GloSea5 from KMA were used as input for rainfall-runoff models. TANK, ABCD, K-DRUM and PRMS models which have individual characteristics were applied to simulate inflow prediction. The dam reservoir inflow prediction was assessed for the periods of 1996~2009 and 2015~2016 for the hindcast and forecast respectively. The results of assessment showed that the inflow prediction was underestimated by comparing with the observed inflow. If rainfall-runoff models were calibrated appropriately, the characteristics of the models were not vital for accuracy of the inflow prediction. However the accuracy of seasonal weather forecasting, especially precipitation data is highly connected to the accuracy of the dam inflow prediction. It is recommended to consider underestimation of the inflow prediction when it is used for operations. Futhermore, for accuracy enhancement of the predicted dam inflow, it is more effective to focus on improving a seasonal weather forecasting rather than a rainfall-runoff model.

  • The purpose of sewer system is to separate rain water from sewage water. Through this, it is possible to prevent the flood and preserve public water territory. For the past few years, many problems of the sewer system have been solved by the execution of sewer rehabilitation project. However, they still exist in sewer system caused by I/I, which are divided into infiltration and inflow. Infiltration means the rain water and underground water that infiltrate through breakage point on pipes, inflow means the water that flows in through misconnection on pipes. This study shows how the I/I calculation has changed according to the new standardized manual and identifies the I/I difference between the new calculation and the existing one. Through the analysis on the two calculation methods we examined the appropriacy of the new method by comparing it to the old one. The result points out that the new standardized manual is more appropriate than the old in aspect of objectivity and reproducibility(establish standardization), rationality(alteration of inflow unit).

  • Among the recent environmental pollution, indoor air pollution has an adverse effect on the health of indoor residents. Radon, one of the causes of indoor air pollution, is released from concrete, gypsum board and asbestos slate among building materials. Radon is a primary carcinogen and is a colorless, tasteless, odorless inert gas that adheres to airborne dust and enters the body through breathing. At this time, there is a risk of developing cancer if the alpha rays from the lononggas entering the human body destroys the lung tissue and is continuously exposed to a high concentration of lonon gas. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the reduction of radon and its exposure to radon by classifying it as a first-level carcinogen, but many people have not recognized it yet, and the research is underdeveloped. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the properties of adsorbed coconut radon to prevent the inflow of radon gas, which is an air pollution source of indoor air, and to prevent inflow into the human body.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve thermal environment of telecommunication equipment rooms that hold TDX-10, TDX-100, 5ESS-2000, PCM of the latest telecommunication equipment. Analysis program is used the commercial CFD code, Star-CD and DOE-2.1E. The result has been compared by the energy consumption and the temperature contour at the 1 m height of room for each case. Different methods such as the relocation of the existing air-conditioner, the inflow of the ambient air into room, the installation of the forced fan and the cooling system equipment of the duct-connection type have been used to test for improvement of thermal environment. The analysis shows that most efficient method is the inflow of the ambient air into room but auxiliary equipment should be needed to prevent the local thermal spot.

  • When building tunnels beneath riverbeds where very large quantities of groundwater inflow exist, added to high water head the soil supporting conditions are very poor because the soil consists of sand and silt, etc. It is necessary to have grouting and mini pipe roof installed in the region for ground reinforcement to decrease permeability. According to this result of horizontal boring and laboratory soil testing, ground reinforcement was achieved by L.W grouting for range of 3.0 times the tunnel radius, to increase stability of the tunnel we used the ling-cut method, 0.8m for one step excavation, shotcrete with 25cm thick, steel lib with H-$125{\times}125$. and a temporary shotcrete invert 20cm thick was installed to prevent deformation of the tunnel.

  • A one-year-old, 3.25 kg intact male Chinchilla cat presented with acute right hind limb paralysis. Diagnostic imaging studies found cardiomegaly with interstitial lung pattern, abnormal mitral valve leaflets without maximum opening at the end of the ventricular diastole and during atrial systole and severe mitral inflow obstruction. Based on these findings and its young age, the case was diagnosed as congenital mitral valve stenosis. Treatment was directed to stabilize clinical conditions related to heart failure, to prevent further formation of thrombus and to relieve pain associated with thromboembolism. After one month of therapy, hind limb motor function was fully recovered.

  • We estimated the global inflow and stock of plastic marine debris. In South Korea, we estimated that the annual inflow of plastic marine debris (72,956 tons) was about 1.4% of annual plastics consumption (5.2 million tons) in 2012. By applying this 1.4% ratio to global plastics production from 1950 to 2013, we estimated that 4.2 million tons of plastic debris entered the ocean in 2013 and that there is a stock of 86 million tons of plastic marine debris as of the end of 2013, assuming zero outflow. In addition, with a logistic model, if 4% of petroleum is turned into plastics, the final stock of plastic marine debris shall be 199 million tons at the end. As the inflow and the stock are different units of measurement, better indicators to assess the effectiveness of inflow-reducing policies are needed. And, as the pollution from plastic marine debris is almost irreversible, countermeasures to prevent it should be valued more, and stronger preventive measures should be taken under the precautionary principle. As this is a preliminary study based on limited information, further research is needed to clarify the tendency of inflow and stock of plastic marine debris.

  • Hwacheon Reservoir is one of the reservoirs, which are located on the North Han River in South Korea. Construction of this reservoir was started in 1939 and completed in 1944. At the upstream of this reservoir there are Peace Reservoir, which is located in South Korea and Imnam Reservoir, which is located in North Korea. After construction of Imnam Reservoir, inflow regularity of Hwacheon Reservoir was changed and inflow of Hwacheon Reservoir also, was decreased. Peace Reservoir is used to decrease flood and damage at downstream due to unexpected release from Imnam Reservoir. This reservoir also, has a special role to regulate inflow of Hwacheon Reservoir. Hwacheon Reservoir has an important role for hydropower generation and flood control. Capacity and maximum discharge capacity of Hwacheon Reservoir are 1018 million $m^3$ and $9500m^3/s$, respectively. This reservoir has four generators to produce power and it is one of the important reservoirs for hydropower generation in South Korea. Due to the important role of this reservoir in generating power, maximization of hydropower generation of this reservoir is important and necessary. For this purpose, HEC-ResPRM model was applied in this study. HEC-ResPRM is a useful and applicable model to operate reservoirs and it gives optimal value for release to maximize power by minimizing penalty functions. In this study, after running the model, amount of release was optimized and hydropower generation was maximized by allocating more water for hydropower release instead of spillway release. Also, the model increased release in dry period from October to June to prevent high amount of release in flood season from July to September.
