Optimized Synthesis Conditions of Polyethersulfone Support Layer for Enhanced Water Flux for Thin Film Composite Membrane

  • Different types of polyethersulfone (PES) support layer for a thin film composite (TFC) membrane were synthesized under various synthesis conditions using the phase inversion method to study the combined effects of substrate, adhesive, and pore former. The permeability, selectivity, pore structure, and morphology of the prepared membranes were analyzed to evaluate the membrane performance. The combined use of substrate, adhesive, and pore former produced a thinner dense top layer, with more straight finger-like pores. The pure water permeation (PWP) of the optimized PES membrane was $27.42L/m^2hr$ (LMH), whereas that of bare PES membrane was 3.24 LMH. Moreover, membrane selectivity, represented as divalent ion ($CaSO_4$) rejection, was not sacrificed under the synthesis conditions, which produced the dramatically enhanced PWP. The high permeability and selectivity of the PES membrane produced under the optimized synthesis conditions suggest that it can be utilized as a potential support layer for TFC membranes.

  • 전기방사를 이용하여 polyethersulfone (PES)-bovin albumin serum (BSA) 단백질 친화막을 제조하였으며, 이때 전기방사에 의한 공정상의 문제점을 용해도가 높고, 끓는점이 높은 2,2,3,4,4,4-Hexafluoro-1-butanol (HFB)를 공용매로 사용함으로써 해결하였다. 또한 공용매는 최적의 온도, 습도 범위를 확대시켜줌으로써 친화막의 대량 생산이 용이하리라 생각한다. 제조된 친화막은 biuret test를 통하여 친화막의 색깔이 무색에서 보라색으로 변함으로써 PES 섬유 내 BSA가 존재함을 확인할 수 있었다. 완충용액의 조성 성분 중 dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)는 세척과정에서 BSA와 L-tryptophan사이의 해리를 제어함으로써 용출과정에서 비교실험보다 약 5배의 높은 용출량을 보여주었다.

  • Membrane Fouling was considered as major drawback in various industrial applications. Thus, this paper reviews the surface modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes for antifouling performance. Various modification techniques clearly indicate that hydrophilicity has to improve on the PES membrane surface. Moreover, the mechanism of fouling reduction with corresponds to various modification methods is widely discussed. Incorporation of hydrophilic functional groups on PES membrane surface enhances the surface free energy thereby which reduces the fouling. Characterization techniques adopted for the surface modified membranes was also discussed. These studies might be useful for the other researchers to utilize the modification technique for the applications of waste water treatment, chemical process industry and food industry.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 각기 다른 특성을 갖는 지지체에 따른 정삼투막의 성능을 비교 빛 평가하는 것이다. 계변 중합을 통하여 소수성 지지체인 폴리술폰(PSf)과 상대적으로 친수성 지지체인 폴리에테르술폰(PES)의 표변에 폴리아미드 활성층을 갖는 정삼투막을 제조하여 투과유량과 역확산을 비교하였다. PSf 정삼투막과 PES 정삼투막의 투과유량은 $4.36\;L/m^2hr$$17.8\;L/m^2hr$으로 PES를 지지체로 하는 정삼투막이 투과성능이 더 우수함을 알 수 있었으며, 이를 통해 지지체의 친수성과 정삼투 공정에서의 투과성능 간에 관련성이 존재함을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 막의 두께가 앓아질수록 정삼투 공정에서 막의 투과유량은 증가하였다.

  • Polyethersulfone (PES)/sulfonated $TiO_2$ ($STiO_2$) nanoparticles (NPs) UF blended membranes were fabricated with different loadings of $STiO_2$. The modified membranes exhibited significant improvement in surface roughness, porosity, and pore size when compared to the PES membrane. The $P-STiO_2$ 1 and $P-TiO_2$ 1 blended membranes exhibited higher water flux, approximately 102.4% and 62.6%, respectively, compared to PES. SPP-$STiO_2$ and $P-STiO_2$ showed lower Rir fouling resistance than the $P-TiO_2$ blended membrane. Overall, the $STiO_2$-blended membranes provide high hydrophilicity permeability, anti-fouling performance, and improved BSA rejection attributed to the hydrogen bonding force and more electrostatic repulsion properties of $STiO_2$.

Modification of ultrafiltration membranes with carbon nanotube buckypaper for fouling alleviation

  • The modification of ultrafiltration membranes with carbon nanotube (CNT) buckypaper on fouling control was investigated. Two types of commercially available flat-sheet membranes were used: PS35 and PES900C/D (PES) (the PS35 membranes were hydrophilic with a molecular weight cutoff of 20 kDa, and the PES membranes were hydrophobic with a molecular weight cutoff of 20 kDa). The CNT buckypaper modified ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by filtering a CNT suspension through the flat-sheet membrane in a dead-end ultrafiltration unit. After modification, the pure water flux of PES was significantly increased, while the pure water flux of PS35 was decreased. The properties of the CNT modified membranes were also investigated. Considering the antifouling properties, pure water flux of the modified membrane, and the stability of CNT buckypaper layer on the membrane surface, ethanol solution with a concentration of 50 wt.%, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a larger diameter (30-50 nm), and the CNT loading with $7.5g/m^2$ was selected. The CNT buckypaper on the surface of ultrafiltration membranes can trap the pollutants in sewage effluent and prevent them reaching the surface of virgin membranes. Water quality analysis showed that the effluent quality of the modified membrane was obviously improved. The removal efficiency of humic acid and protein-like matters by the modified membrane was significant. These results indicate the potential application of the CNT buckypaper layer modified membranes in the field of wastewater reclaim.

상전환법에 의한 미세다공성 한외여과막의 제조 및 투과특성 (Preparation and Permeation Characteristics of Finely Porous Ultrafiltration Membranes by Phase Inversion Method)

  • In this work, ultrafiltration(UF) membranes were prepared using polyethersulfone(PES). The polymer was dissolved in various solvent, such as N, N-dimethyl formamide(DMF), N,-dimethyl acetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) and N-methyl-2- pynolidone(NMP). Each polymer solution was casted on the glass plate, and immersed into non-solvent bath. In this way finely porous UF membranes were prepared by phase inversion method. The cross sectional structure of PES membrane was asymmetric which was consist of sponge-like sublayer, finger-like toplayer, and active skin layer. From the solute rejection experiments, the molecular weight cut off of the prepared membrane in various solvent was evaluated 10,000 for DMF, 30,000 for DMAc, 50,000 for DMSO, and 10,000 for NMP respectively.

  • 1. INTRODUCTION : The phase inversion method is widely used to prepare a variety of polymeric membranes ranging from micro-filtration to gas separation. The final morphology obtained by immersion precipitation strongly reflects the thermodynamics and kinetics of the system involved. The equilibrium thermodynamics of the ternary system of polymer/solvent/ nonsolvent is still very important to understand and predict membrane structure. Polysulfone (PSf) and polyethersulfone (PES) are important polymers as membrane materials due to the chemical resistance, mechanical strength, thermal stability and transport properies. There are several reports on the experimental phase diagrams in ternary mixtures of PSf/solvent/nonsolvent, and PES/solvent/nonsolvent. It would be interesting to investigate the solution thermodynamics containing these two polymers since PES is slightly less hyclrophobic than PSf.

PEGDA와 ZIF-8을 함유한 PEBAX2533 막의 기체투과 특성 (Gas Permeation Characteristics of PEBAX2533 Membrane Containing PEGDA and ZIF-8)

  • 본 연구에서는 poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBAX)/poly(ethylene) glycoldiacrylate (PEGDA)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-polyethersulfone (PES) 복합막을 제조하여 N2와 CO2의 기체투과 성질을 조사하였다. 각 분자량별 PEGDA 함량 증가에 따른 PEBAX/PEGDA-PES 복합막의 기체 투과도는 감소하였고, CO2/N2 선택도는 거의 일정한 값을 보이다가 PEGDA 30 wt% 이후 점차 증가하였다. 특히 PEGDA250 g/mol 50 wt%가 첨가되어 제조된 PEBAX/PEGDA250 g/mol 50 wt%-PES의 경우 15.1의 선택도를 보였다. 그리고 각 분자량별로 CO2/N2 선택도가 거의 일정한 범위인 PEGDA 0~30 wt%의 복합막에 대해 ZIF-8에 따른 기체투과 성질을 조사하였다. 대체적으로 첨가되는 ZIF-8 함량이 증가할수록 N2와 CO2의 투과도가 점차 증가하였고, CO2/N2 선택도는 PEBAX/PEGDA250 g/mol 30 wt%/ZIF-8 20 wt%-PES 복합막에서 3.4로 가장 높았다.

  • 본 연구에서는 비용매 첨가제 BE와 습도 및 노출 시간이 정밀여과막의 구조, 투과특성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 멤브레인은 PES/DMF/TSA/PVP/BE 혼합 용액을 물에 침지하여 제조하였다. 다양한 농도의 BE가 첨가된 캐스팅 용액들을 공기 중의 수분이 흡착될 수 있도록 상대습도 60%와 80%로 달리하여 40초와 90초 동안 노출시켰으며, 그 결과로 만들어진 멤브레인 투과 성능과 표변 및 단면 구조와의 연관성을 조사하였다. 멤브레인의 특성은 capillary flow porometer, FE-SEM 및 순수 투과 장치를 이용하여 이루어졌다. PES 멤브레인의 표면 구조는 상대 및 노출 시간에 의해 크게 영향을 받는다. 또한 BE의 첨가는 특정한 습도와 노출 시간에서 표면 및 내부의 구조의 조절이 용이함을 확인할 수 있었다.
