The relationships among mechanical properties, rheological properties, and morphology by reactive extrusion based on commingled pckaging film wastes contains polypropylene (PP) pckaging film system [PP/polyethylene (PE)/aluminum (Al)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)] and Nylon packaging film system[Nylon/PE/linear-low density polyethylene (LLDPE)] were investigated to improve the compatibility and toughness of these wastes using various compatibilizers such as ethylene vinylacetate (EVA), styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS), styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene-graft-maleic anhydride copolymer (SEBS-g-MA), polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA), polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) , polyethylene-graft-acrylic acid (PE-g-AA) and polypropylene-graft-acrylic acid (PP-g-AA). Compared with simple melt blend system, the blends showed improvement of about $50\%$ increase in physical properties when SEBS and EVA were added. However, SEBS-g-MA thermoplastic elastomer which is highly reactive with amine terminal group of nylon, resulted in about $200\%$ increase in impact strength. This compatibilization effect resulted from the increase of interfacial adhesion and the reduction of domain size of dispersed phase in PP/Nylon blend system.
This study focuses on the investigation of the impregnation of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) crosslinked with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA-MA) to porous polyethylene membrane for the fuel cell application. The membranes were characterized by the measurements of the water content, contact angle, FTIR spectra, thermal gravimetric analysis, ion exchange capacity, proton conductivity, methanol permeability and elastic modulus. The existence of hydrophilic moieties in the impregnated membranes was confirmed by contact angle and FTIR measurements. The impregnated PVA/PSSAMA(90:10) membrane exhibited a higher ion exchange capacity (1.2 meq./g dry membrane) than Nafion membrane (0.91 meq./g dry membrane). Through the elastic modulus measurement, the dimensional stability of the resulting membranes was expected to increase higher than the polyethylene membranes. The methanol crossover and water content decreased even if the PSSA-MA content increased due to the reduction of the free volume.
Absorption potential of oak charcoal was estimated using simulated static and dynamic systems to establish a model for practical application of the charcoal in modified atmosphere (MA) packaging and during the storage of 'Fuji' apples. Practical MA packaging was performed using $60{\mu}m$ PE film zipper bags in which five apples were placed. Absorption potential of oak charcoal was $58.4{\mu}L/100g$ charcoal for ethylene and 583 mg/100 g charcoal for carbon dioxide. Effects of enclosing a 100 g-charcoal packet inside a MA package seemed not to last long enough for quality maintenance of 'Fuji' apples stored at $0^{\circ}C$ for three months. During extended storage, ethylene and $CO_2$ levels were not significantly reduced by charcoal treatment. Nevertheless, absorption of carbon dioxide appeared to alleviate the incidence of $CO_2$-related internal browning disorder. Modelling study of practical storage and marketing procedure indicates that 0.19 kg charcoal/day is required to offset $CO_2$ production from 15 kg of apples at $0^{\circ}C$. The amount of charcoal should be increased to 3.10 kg/day if ethylene is a target gas. From the practical point of view, the results suggest that charcoal could be used only for small unit packages for a short period.
Potential of consumer unit packaging was investigated for quality maintenance during export simulation in king oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus eryngii). Mushrooms were harvested in late May, precooled to $4^{\circ}C$ within 6 hours, and then packaged for shipping in two ways: 2 kg bulk packaging in a polyethylene (PE) bag or three types of unit packaging methods such as 400 g in polypropylene film bag (PPB), 200 g on styrofoam tray + PE shrinkage film wrapping (STW), and 200 g in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers (PETC). For local distribution of bulk-packaged commodity, mushrooms were sorted again and packaged into 3 consumer units in the same way as for the initial shipping packages. Simulation of refrigerated container shipping was performed in a walk-in type pilot storage at $0.5^{\circ}C$ for 5 weeks, while local marketing simulation was carried out on the shelf at $7^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. During the shipment simulation, creation of modified atmosphere (MA) was substantial in 2 kg bulk packages with low $O_2$ below 2% and high $CO_2$ over 15% whereas, in PPB and PETC unit packages, relatively higher $O_2$ concentrations were observed. On the shelf at $7^{\circ}C$, $CO_2$ concentrations rapidly increased in PPB and PETC packages despite the short marketing period. Overall marketability evaluated by off-flavor, browning, and texture rating was maintained at excellent level when 2 kg bulk packaging in PE or unit packaging in PPB and PETC were used for shipment. In contrast, establishment of MA was very slight in STW packages during shipment and local distribution resulting in poor quality after export simulation. The results suggested that shipment using adequate consumer unit packaging is more practical and economically beneficial than using bulk packaging in the export program consisting of 5-week shipment and 7-day local distribution.

In recent years, polymer/clay nanocomposites have generated a great interest, both in industry and in academia, because they often exhibit remarkable improvement in material properties when compared with the virgin polymer or conventional micro and macro-composites. Among these properties are stiffness, strength, dimensional stability and permeability. [1-3] The dispersion of hydrophilic silicates in a hydrophobic matrix like Polyethylene (PE) is difficult because of the difference in character between PE and Montmorillonite (MMT). Therefore, it is necessary to modify PE with polar groups, which can increase the hydrophilicity of PE. In this study, High density polyethylene (HDPE)/$Mg(OH)_2$/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites having a various compositions were prepared by a melt blending technique with an internal mixer and properties namely mechanical, morpology, rheological and thermal properties were investigated
To improve freshness maintenance function of food containers, many methods have been applied. Most of the methods utilize absorption properties of porous ceramics powders. However, this kind of methods was appeared to be a non-realistic one because of the short effective periods of the produce and reduced die life due to the ceramic powders mixed in the raw materials. Other methods, e.g., CA or MA, need more study for practical application bemuse of the high cost in process. In addition to this, different method should be applied depends on foods. In this paper, a new technology based on information templation was applied in making a food preservation film. It has been known recently that water memorizes informations and this information could be tempelated to other materials through appropriate pretest. One of the participating company developed this process to template informations to PE materials unitizing water as an information rallier. Food packaging film was made using this PE chips. Experimental results of freshness maintenance test of foods showed that it is effective. Results and disussions are reported in this paper.

This study investigated the effects of conventional predrying and modified atmosphere (MA) on the head quality and storability of Chinese cabbage 'Norang' cultivar. Immediately after harvest, heads were predried for 2 days and MA stored in $50{\mu}m$ PE film packages at $4^{\circ}C$. MA packaging restrained Hunter L and b values of Chinese cabbage more effectively than non-packaging during storage at $4^{\circ}C$. But there was little change between the two treatments. Fresh weight decreased less in heads treated with predrying and MA than non-treatment during storage. Predried Chinese cabbage heads kept a high level of soluble solids in 4 weeks of storage, while non-packaging maintained high contents of soluble solids for 6 weeks of storage period. Chinese cabbage heads contained 7.0 mg/gFW glucose, 6.3 mg/gFW fructose, and 0.6 mg/gFW sucrose as major soluble sugars at harvest. The content of sugars decreased immediately after predrying and increased steadily after 2 weeks storage. It was found inappropriate to assess head quality of Chinese cabbage by investigating was investigated by Hunter a, firmness, dry matters content, pH, and soluble sugars after predrying and MA package. Marketability of Chinese cabbage was lost when heads were stored at room temperature in 2 weeks. It showed poor appearance of heads stored at $4^{\circ}C$ in 7 weeks. Decay occurred in Chinese cabbage stored in MA under excessive relative humidity. Predried head showed good appearance during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 7 weeks. As a result, Chinese cabbage heads can be successfully stored for at least 7 weeks with predrying and MA storage.
Modified atmosphere packaging was applied to oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) to study the effect of storage temperatures and packaging materialso. Whole mushrooms (200g) were package with polyethylene film $(PE,\;60{\mu}m\;thickness)$, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), or ceramic film (containing 5% zeolite) and stored at 0, 5, 10 and $20^{\circ}C$. Weight loss, color, firmness, gas composition $(O_2,\;CO_2)$ inside the film package and ethanol content in the tissue of MA packaged mushrooms were examined. Mushroom that were packed unwrapped in a conventional hardboard box (2 kg) lost marketability at a very early stage of storage due to weight loss, shrinkage, browning, and spore formation. During storage, film packaging prevented or retarded the deterioration of the mushrooms in the aspects of appearance, texture, and discoloration. Firmness slightly decreased with storage time. Total color difference was much higher in the control than in the film-packaged mushroom and rapidly increased at the early of storage. Correlation analysis showed a high correlation between total color difference and b values. These results were characterized by the reduced respiration rate resulting from elevated carbon dioxide and reduced oxygen levels in the package. At all storage temperatures, ethanol content in the tissue increased slightly at the early part of storage and rose considerably towards the end of the storage period. Ethanol content in the oyster mushrooms was higher in the stipe than in pileus tissues. The shelf life of the oyster mushrooms was about $8{\sim}11$ days at $0^{\circ}C$, about $4{\sim}6$ day at $5^{\circ}C$, about $2{\sim}3$ days at $10^{\circ}C$, and about $1{\sim}2$ days at $20^{\circ}C$.
In this study, low density polyethylene/organo-clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending. Thermal property, structure, and morphology of the LDPE/organo-clay nanocomposites were investigated. When the composition ratios of the compounds of LDPE/PE-g-MA/organo-clay were 90/10/1~10 (w/w/w), X-ray diffractograms of LDPE/organo-clay nanocomposites revealed that the intercalation of polymer chains lead to increase the spacing between clay layers. TEM microphotographs showed that LDPE was intercalated into organo-clay. TGA performed under air atmosphere demonstrated a great increase in thermal stability of the LDPE/organo-clay nanocomposties. The maximum decomposition temperature of LDPE/organo-clay nanocomposite was increased about $80^{\circ}C$ compared with pure LDPE. When the organo-clay contents were 1.0~5.0 wt%, the LOI values were increased with increasing the organo-clay content, but in the case of the contents more than 5.0 wt%, the LOI values were not increased any more.
In this study, we fabricated the HDPE and ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ composites with PE-g-MA as a function of the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ nanopowder weight ratios. The electron beam irradiations on HDPE/${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ composites were carried out over a range of absorbed doses from 20 to 200 kGy to make three-dimensional network structures. The mechanical properties were characterized using UTM for confirming the changes of the flexural strength and tensile strength. It was observed that the mechanical properties of HDPE were enhanced by the addition of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$. However, the strength of the 5 wt% ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ added composites decreased due to the nano-powder aggregation. The mechanical properties of composites were increased as increasing the electron beam irradiation up to 150 kGy. We believed that the electron beam irradiated HDPE/${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ composites can be a good candidate for a variety of industrial applications.
