Research on condition monitoring and diagnosis of power facilities has been conducted to improve the safety and reliability of electric power supply. Although insulation diagnostic techniques for unit equipment such as gas-insulated switchgears and transformers have been developed rapidly, studies on monitoring of cables have only included aspects such as whether defects exist and partial discharge (PD) detection; other characteristics and features have not been discussed. Therefore, this paper dealt with PD characteristics against void sizes and positions, and with defect localization in XLPE cable. Four types of defects with different sizes and positions were simulated and PD pulses were detected using a high frequency current transformer (HFCT) with a frequency range of 150kHz~30MHz. The results showed that the apparent charge increased when the defect was adjacent to the conductor; the pulse count in the negative half of the applied voltage was about 20% higher than that in the positive half. In addition, the defect location was calculated by time-domain reflectometry (TDR) method, it was revealed that the defect could be localized with an error of less than1m in a 50m cable.

Because of internal voids in insulators give rise to partial discharge(PD), which cause local breakdown and even entire insulation breakdown. Treeing due to PD is one of the main causes of breakdown of the insulating materials and reduction of the insulation life. Therefore the necessity for establishing a method to diagnose the aging of insulation materials and to predict the breakdown of insulation has become important. From this viewpoint, our studies diagnose insulation degradation using the method of computer sensing system, which has the advantages of PD and acoustic emission(AE) sensing system. To use advantages of these two methods can be used effectively to search for treeing location and PD in some materials. In analysis method of degradation, We analyzed the PD pulse and AE pulses by regression analysis, compared to these obtained the correlation coefficient and determination coefficient by T-distribution and saw that PD and AE pulses show a similar pattern on the whole. This is in agreement with the results of the research by Yoshimura and Fujita.

In this paper, an novel optical measuring system based on the electro-optic effect has been proposed and realized using Pockels cell with a view to detecting partial discharge taking place at the needle plane electrode. This system has the following advantages ; nonmetallic probe sensor, immune to external EMI noise and broad band response of the Pockels cell from DC to GHz. This system is constructed by He-Ne laser, Mach-Zehnder interferometer with Pockels sensor, balanced photo receiver, data acquisition board and PC. The response characteristics of the developed proto type sensor are examined for AC and corona discharge.

Surface electrical conduction in insulator is most important factor to assess the insulation performances of outdoor insulating materials. In this paper, contamination performance of the widely used materials for outdoor insulator - porcelain, EPDM, Silicone rubber - were discussed by measuring properties of average leakage current and scintillation discharge pulses under artificial contamination conditions. The artificial contaminations used were deionized distilled water fog, 0.5wt% NaCl salt fog of light pollution and 2wt% NaCl salt fog of medium pollution. The average leakage current was appeared linearly with applied voltage at dry and clean surface condition. The magnitude of leakage current was almost same at different kinds of samples. In case of deionized distilled water fog, the characteristics of leakage current and applied voltage was most different to that in case of dry and clean condition. In case of salt fog pollution condition, The leakage current was increased above critical voltage. The scintillation discharges were also activated at the level. the leakage current and scintillation discharges were increased with increasing pollution degree. The resistance to pollution properties of silicone rubber appeared excellent among them.

The aging diagnosis method using partial discharge measurement detects discharge signals that critical cause of failure in insulation material operated a long time and can diagnose aging state of insulation materials with an aging analysis algorithm. The HFPD measurement method is a technique to analyze aging state of high voltage insulation materials and detect higher frequency signals than conventional PD measurement method therefore it takes less noise effect and could execute active line measurement. It is possible to analyze main discharge phenomena and obtain access to aging progress occurred in insulation materials through accumulation of HFPD signals during determined interval and expression of fractal dimension using statistical process of accumulated signals. The HFPD signals that occurred in each applied voltages are measured during 180 cycles and accumulated to the same phase of one cycle. These patterns that made by previous method are normalized with logarithm function and than inputted to neural networks. The aging diagnosis of insulation material was possible and the recognition ratio of neural network appeared very high.
HTS power transmission cable is expected to transport large electric power with a compact size. We are developing a 3-core, 22.9 kV, 50 MVA class HTS power cable, and each core consists of a conductor and shield wound with Bi-2223 tapes, electrical insulation with laminated polypropylene paper (LPP) impregnated with liquid nitrogen. This paper describes the design and experimental results of the model cable for the 22.9 kV, 50 MVA class HTS power transmission cable. The model cable was used the SUS tapes instead of HTS tapes because of testing the electrical characteristics only. The model cable was 1.3 m long and electrical insulation thickness was 4.5 mm. The model cable was evaluated the partial discharge (PD), AC and Impulse withstand voltage in liquid nitrogen. The AC and Impulse withstands voltage and PD inception stress was satisfied with the standard of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) in the test results. The 3-core 22.9 kV, 50 MVA class HTS power cable has been designed and manufactured based on these experimental results.
It is very essential to find out defects and remove them in the insulation at the early stage because the defects in the insulation induce PD which deteriorates the material, resulting in the breakdown. In the real application of high voltage, the interface of the different insulation is the weakest place for both electrical and mechanical aspects. In this paper, characteristics of PD caused by the artificial defects, such as metallic particles, voids and moist fibers, at the interfaces of the cable joint (PJB) were investigated using the specially designed electrode system.
In this work, a possible new PD de technique, based on the electro-optic effect(P effect), has been proposed. The refractive index ellipsoid of EO crystal, as $LiNbO_3$, is changed by both the externally a electric field and its hysteresis loop of which effect on this hysteresis loop gives rise t discrepancy of index variation. Therefore, an eq regarding the phase variation of modulated beam through $LiNbO_3$ crystal under applied e field, is newly proposed considering the influen hysteresis characteristics. For this purpose generated from needle-plane electrode in oil has detected by use of $LiNbO_3$ cell and analyzed b equation. As a result, it is observed that PD measu phase intervals are limited by the cr characteristics such as asymmertrical P-E hyst and half-wave voltage.

This paper introduces an evaluation code, which can numerically express the noise possessing degree of signals. By using this code, the best kind and setting of noise suppressing techniques can be chosen automatically. This code is applied to three kinds of specific denoising techniques; those are simple noise removing method in the count versus phase distribution, fuzzy logic method based on noise type in magnitude versus phase plot, and lastly, the technique using grouping characteristics of PD pulses in 3D plot of magnitude versus phase versus cycle. The algorithm shows good performance in the various real PD signals measured from various high voltage apparatuses in Korea.
