The purpose of this study was to investigate the irradiatiion effects on the capillary and endothelial cell in the submandibular gland. Sprague-Dawley strain male rats were singly irradiated to their neck region with the dose of 5Gy by 6MV X-irradiation and sacrificed on the 6 hours, 12 hours, 1, 3, 7, and 14days after irradiation. The authors observed the histological changes of the capillary at H & E and PAS staining under a light microscope, and also observed the ultrastructural changes of the endothelial cell using a transmission electron microscope. The obtaining results were as follows: 1. In the light microscopic examination, the capillary density was slightly increased on the 1day after irradiation, and increased until the 7 days after irradiatiion. After then, capillary density was apparently decreased. 2. The reaction to PAS staining at acinar cells was decreased on the 6 hours after irradiation, and recovered on the 7days after irradiation. But reaction was decreased on the 14days after irradiation agan, after then, gradually recovered with days. 3. In the transmission electron microscopic examination, mild proliferation of cytoplasmic process of the endothelial cell and reduction in luminal size were observed just after irradiation. After then, nuclear degeneration, marked proliferation of cytoplasmic process, thickened basal lamina, and numerous cytoplasmic vesicles were observed on the 1day after irradiation. These changes were recovered to normal on the 14days after 5Gy group, but not with 10Gy irradiation group. And destruction of endothelial cell and loss of basal lamina were not observed in both groups. 4. From the above results, reduction in luminal size, proliferation of cytoplasmic process and thickening of basal lamina were observed as the irradiation effects on the capillary and endothelial cell of the submandibular gland. And also, these changes may induce increase in capillary number and endothelial permeability by means of increase of cytoplasmic vesicle formation. The changes appeared earlier and more prominent in 10Gy irradiated group than in 5Gy irradiated group.

The aromatic hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a cytosolic protein that binds the environmental pollutant, dioxin. The liganded AhR translocates into the nucleus where it heterimerizes with a constitutive nuclear protein, AhR nuclear translocator (Arnt). The N-terminal regions of both AhR and Arnt contain basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) and Per-AhR-Arnt-Sim (PAS) motifs that are required for DNA binding, dimerization, and ligand binding whereas the C-terminal regions of both AhR and Arnt contain transactivation domains. Here, results from the mammalian two-hybrid system indicate that Arnt can make a homodimer but AhR cannot. In the presence of dioxin, the interaction between AhR and Arnt is stronger than that of the Arnt homodimer, suggesting that Arnt prefers to make a heterodimer with the liganded AhR rather than a homodimer. Transfection analyses using the GAL4-driven reporter system suggest that AhR's N-terminal region represses its own transactivation domain, as well as exogenous transactivation domains such as Sp 1 and VP16. Interestingly, the repressed transactivation domains of AhR are activated by ligand-dependent heterodimerization with Arnt. These observations suggest that heterodimerzation with Arnt is necessary not only for DNA binding but also for activation of the repressed transactivation capability of AhR.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrocortisone in the fusion mechanism of the secondary palatine shelves in the rat. Pregnant rats were injected with 5.0 mg/100 gm body weight of hydrocortisone for 3 days between the 7th day and the 9th day of pregnancy. Between the 14th day md the 18 day of pregnancy, the fetuses were removed and decapitated to be immersed in $10\%$ formalin and Carney's solution. Preparations were stained with alizarin red S, hematoxylin-eosin and alcian blue respectively, and partly were treated for Periodic acid-Schiff reaction. The results were as followings: 1. The incomplete fusion of the palatal epithelium took place though the polarity of epithelial cells. 2. At the edge of shelves the differentiation of mesenchymal cells was observed, but the inter penetration of mesenchyme was not shown. 3. It was considered that the phenomenon of hypocalcification in matrix had relation to the decrease stainability to alizarin red S in shelves. 4. It might be concluded that the connective tissue under epithelium showed the decrease tendency to alcian blue and PAS reaction due to the inhibition of the synthesis of the mucopolysaccharide.
For the purpose of investigating the response of the periodontal tissue in relation to the experimental tooth movement, the rats were inhibited from collagen formation by adminstration of aminoacetonitrile. Findings were as follows: 1) In experimental group, the principal fibers of the periodontal ligament came to run parallel along the alveolar bone or root surface on the pressure side, while the decrease in density, irregular arrangement, and partial loss of principal fibers were observed on the tension side. 2) Sharpey's fibers at the alveolar bone decreased in number, and as the aminoacetonitrile administration continued, the capability of matrix formation decreased on the tension side, the narrowing of the alveolar septum and poor-bony trabeculation appeared on the pressure side. 3) In cementum, Sharpey's fibers were distributed irregularly. The formation of acellura cementum was decreased on the tension side, while the formative capability of cellular cementum was increased. 4) The degree of staining by Herovici technique decreased in the periodontal membrane. By PAS and ninhydrine -Schiff reaction it was appeared weakly positive in the region where the Sharpey's fibers existed.

New technology that reduces photolithography process steps from 4 to 3 in fabrication of TFT LCD is introduced. The core technology for 3mask-TFTs is the lift-off process [1], by which the PAS and PXL layer are formed simultaneously. To evaluate the stability of this lift-off process, outgases from photo resist on a substrate during ITO deposition and the quality of ITO film were analyzed and the conventional photo resist stripper machine which operates lift-off process was examined to see its ability to reduce particle problems of the machine. Through the development of total process and design for TFTs using this 3mask technology, panels in TN and IPS modes which exhibit same performances of a display using a conventional process were achieved. In addition, this process was already verified in the mass production line and now some products are being produced by the 3mask technology.
Objective: This study was carried out to determine the depositional characteristics of pine needles, pine tree bark, moss, and soil, which are used as a passive air sampler (PAS) of atmospheric polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Methods: All four media were sampled from the same site. PCB concentrations were analyzed by GC/MSD, and the lipid contents were measured using the gravimetric method. Results: The total PCB concentration (IUPAC No. 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, 180) was the highest in soil (227.97 pg/g dry), followed by pine needles (71.36 pg/g dry), pine tree bark (44.58 pg/g dry), then moss (21.91 pg/g dry). Pine needles contained the highest lipid contents (21.31 mg/g dry), whereas soil (10.01 mg/g dry), pine tree bark (4.85 mg/g dry), and moss (1.92 mg/g dry) contained less. The concentration of lower-chlorinated PCBs was relatively high in pine needles, pine tree bark and moss, but not in soil. The PCB concentrations were proportional to their lipid contents in pine needles, pine tree bark and moss, but a different trend was revealed in soil. Conclusions: The PCBs concentrations in the media were affected by various factors including atmospheric PCB concentrations, lipid contents, and depositional pathways. However, each of these factors had a varying influence depending on the type of medium.
The author observed histochemically the nature of the calcified tissue in the rabbit dental pulp, induced by pulpal injection of potassium permanganate. The pulp of rabbit mandibular incisors were exposed and enlarged by a dental hand reamer. The exposed pulps were injected with 0.05ml of 20mM solution of potassium permanganate dissolved in Ringer's solution in experimental tooth. Also the control tooth received a pulpal injection of 0.05ml of Ringer's solution. After pulpal injection, the tooth was plugged with a gutta-percha root canal point. The staining techniques were hematoxylin-eosin stain, van Gieson stain, PAS reaction, toluidine blue stain, alcian blue-hematoxylin stain and colloidal iron-picric acid stain. The results were as follows: 1. The pulp on experimental tooth showed osteodentin-like calcified tissue. Also, in some areas, false denticle-like substance were observed. 2. The central portion of the calcified matrix showed metachromasia in toluidine blue stain had strong staining capacity in alcian blue stain. 3. The peripheral portion of the calcified tissue revealed marked van Gieson positive reaction for collagen. But their staining ability in alcian blue was slight and metachromasia was not appeared.
A case of renal candidiasis is reported in a 4-year-old male Masked Palm civet (Paguma larvata) On necropsy, the kidneys were bilaterally swollen, pale and had numerous 1 to 3 mm diameter white foci throughout the parenchyma on cut section. The urinary bladder was filled with opaque and milky exudate. Histologically, severe infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages and necrosis were noted in the interstitial areas of both cortex and medulla and in the lumens of renal tubules and collecting duct often resulting in cystic dilation of the tubules. PAS-positive fungal yeasts or pseudohyphae were often associated with the lesion. Candida albicans was isolated from the kidney and urinary bladder.
Granular cell tumor was described in a 7-year-old male Miniature Pinscher. Sublingual mass was surgically removed and submitted for diagnosis. The mass was about 1.8 cm in diameter, firm, tan, and ulcerated. On histopathology, the mass was unencapsulated and infiltrated adjacent tissue and consisted of nest or sheet of round to polygonal, and occasional spindle-shaped cells. The neoplastic cells contain large amount of eosinophilic granular materials in the cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive to neuron-specific enolase but were negative to S-100. The cytoplasmic eosinophilic granules were positive to PAS but were negative to PTAH methods. Based on these results, the mass was diagnosed as sublingual granular cell tumor. No recurrence or metastasis was noted so far since surgery.
