  • Ever-growing recreation, tourism and ecotourism worldwide have become a significant factor of resource degradation in many protected areas. Managers of these areas are increasingly challenged to implement policies, strategies and actions that would protect the resource base while providing quality visitor experience. One major issue in managing protected area visitations is that of carrying capacity, or the question of "how much use is too much\ulcorner". Scientific studies of visitor impacts, often known as recreation ecology, has generated a knowledge base that provides valuable input to the visitor carrying capacity management process adopted by the U.S. National Park Service. This paper aims at (a) providing an overview of recreation ecology research and its application in managing visitor carrying capacity, and (b) examining the relevance of recreation ecology to East Asian protected areas with special reference to the visitor capacity issue.ity issue.

  • Background: This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of 21 different national dyslipidemia screening strategies according to total cholesterol (TC) cutoff and screening interval among 40 years or more for the primary prevention of coronary heart disease over a lifetime in Korea, from a societal perspective. Methods: A decision tree was used to estimate disease detection with the 21 different screening strategies, while a Markov model was used to model disease progression until death, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and costs from a Korea societal perspective. Results: The results showed that the strategy with TC 200 mg/dL and 4-year interval cost \4,625,446 for 16.65105 QALYs per person and strategy with TC 200 mg/dL and 3-year interval cost \4,691,771 for 16.65164 QALYs compared with \3,061,371 for 16.59877 QALYs for strategy with no screening. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of strategy with TC 200 mg/dL and 4-year interval versus strategy with no screening was \29,916,271/QALY. At a Korea willingness-to-pay threshold of \30,500,000/QALY, strategy with TC 200 mg/dL and 4-year interval is cost-effective compared with strategy with no screening. Sensitivity analyses showed that results were robust to reasonable variations in model parameters. Conclusion: In this study, revised national dyslipidemia screening strategy with TC 200 mg/dL and 4-year interval could be a cost-effective option. A better understanding of the Korean dyslipidemia population may be necessary to aid in future efforts to improve dyslipidemia diagnosis and management.

  • This study aims to explore alternative strategies for the archival professional training system in response to changing records management environments. It found implications in the training and qualification system for overseas archival professionals and compared and analyzed the qualification system for Korean archival professionals. In addition, by analyzing the archival graduate schools' general status and the instructors' research performance, the study confirmed that many instructors have low academic interest in archival studies and the gap between schools was significant. Based on this, interviews with professors and experts were conducted to gather opinions on improving the archival professional training system. In conclusion, the study presents prerequisite tasks of organizing an archival community governance system and securing self-regulatory power. Moreover, it proposes innovative measures for the archival professional training system with three major tasks: creating graduate education guidelines, establishing a continuing and deepening education system, and transforming educational institutions.

  • The growing amount of using the fossil fuel is bringing about environmentally, economically serious problems like as global warming. To solve the problems, the international society has begun to decrease greenhouse gases through the international agreement like as the climate change convention. In South of Korea, it was presented practical goal of Green Development try to decrease greenhouse, which is the future 60 years vision. And, it contains the strategies of Green Development and 5th Plan of Green Development. Nowadays, the government accepted the active alternative scenario 3, which is the goal of 4% decrease in greenhouse gases until 2020's, presented by Presidential Committee on Green Growth. This study established the strategies of Transport Demand Management to decrease the greenhouse gases in transportation part, and then we measured the effect of them. As a result, if it takes effect the aggressive strategies annually, it will cut greenhouse gas pollution by 3.1%, which is 7,590,000t$CO_2eq$, in transportation part. So, we can expect that it would be the effective policy tool to achieve the goal of government, which is the Green Development, if it controls the strategies of TDM effectively by the political needs.

  • There is not enough knowledge on how to use, build, and apply ubiquitous technologies such as the ubiquitous sensor network, GIS, statistic analysis system, mobile GPS system etc. Also there are other questions such as, how should the knowledge information resources be managed and web decision making system developed for national park management. The purpose of this study is to propose a framework for the national park integrated management system based on ubiquitous information technology. This study will include followings: 1) this study explores what ubiquitous information technologies are needed for national park management, 2) this study proposes building strategies about the spatial and attribute database using ubiquitous information technologies, and links methods among geographic information system, analysis program, sensor network, etc. The results of this study will contribute towards deciding a direction for national park policy in preparation for the ubiquitous computing oriented society.

  • Patients entering an emergency care center in a hospital usually visit medical processes in different orders depending on the urgency level and the medical treatments required. We formulate the patient flows among diverse processes in an emergency care center using the Jackson network, which is one of the queueing networks, in order to evaluate the system performances such as the expected queue length and the expected waiting time. We present a case study based on actual data collected from an emergency care center in a hospital, in order to prove the validity of applying the Jackson network model in practice. After assessing the current system performances, we provide operational strategies to reduce waiting at the bottleneck processes and evaluate the impact of those strategies on the entire system.

  • In this study, I examined the direct or indirect paths among the intra-personal factors as well as extra-personal factors affecting on children's peer competence. Subjects were 514 5-year-old children, their mothers, teachers. The teachers rated each children using Peer Competence Scale (Park, 2001) and completed emotion regulation and Student-Teacher Relationship Scale. The mothers responded to a questionnaire, including Parental Involvement Checklist (Cohen, 1989), parenting behaviors, and Children's Temperament. The data were used for path analysis with Amos 6.0 program. Results of this study were : (1) Children's temperament have an influence on children's peer competence through children's emotion regulation via mothers' parenting behaviors. (2) Children's temperament have an influence on children's peer competence through teacher-child relationship. (3) Mothers' parenting behaviors have an influence on children's peer Competence through mothers' management strategies of peer relations.

  • Two decommissioning projects are carried out at the KAERI (Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute), one for the Korea research reactors, KRR-1 and KRR-2, and another for the uranium conversion plant (UCP). The concept of the management of the wastes from the decommissioning sites was reviewed with a relation of the decommissioning strategies, technologies for the treatment and the decontamination, and the characteristics of waste. All the liquid waste generated from KRR-1 and KRR-2 decommissioning site is evaporated by a solar evaporation facility and all the liquid waste from the UCP is treated together with lagoon sludge waste. The solid wastes from the decommissioning sites are categorized into three groups; not contaminated, restricted releasable and radioactive waste. The not-contaminated waste will be reused and/or disposed at an industrial disposal site, and the releasable waste is stored for the future disposal at the KAERI. The radioactive waste is packed in containers, and will be stored at the decommissioning sites till they are sent to a national repository site. The reduction of the radioactive solid waste is one of the strategies for the decommissioning projects and could be achieved by the repeated decontamination. By the achievement of the minimization strategy, the amount of radioactive waste was reduced and the disposal cost will be reduced, but the cost for manpower, for direct materials and for administration was increased.

  • Recently concept of self-leadership that leads one's own activities toward right direction through self-control or self-management has been being focused on practices as well as academia. This study is to investigate the influence between self-leadership strategies and learning performance at IT classes mediated by attitude of attendance focused on the social science students at an university. This study performed the comparative study to investigate whether differences among Korean(64 samples) and Chinese(31 samples) students is or not Research results can give us right direction of task-taking attitudes in firms or learning attitudes in teaching organization and implications to human resource managers who are in charge of improving learning performance or productivity.
