  • Continued to the previous papers, the present investigation is carried out to clarify cesium-137 activities and potassium contents among 54 samples of edible marine algae collected along the coast of Korea during September, 1973 and April, 1974. The potassium contents are variable, 1.5-29.6%, and 11.36% on an average, while most of the members contain them about 10-16% generally. Among the algal phyla, they are 13.49% in green, 10.82% in brown and 16.46% in red algae, respectively. Cesium-137 activities are variable, 0.19-8.13 pCi$\^$137/ Cs/g K, and 2.35 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K on an average in the samples investigated. Among the algal phyla they are 4.35 in green, 2.17 in brown and 0.89 pCi $\^$137/Cs/g K in red algae, respectively. Green algae contain especially higher activities compared with the other two groups. The brown alga, Myelophycus caespitosus shows the highest activities, 8.13 pCi$\^$137/Cs/g K, among the members investigated. Considering the concentration factor, this plant would be an indicator plant of cesium-137 among the marine algae along the coast of Korea.

  • The prcx.iuction of extracellular 1,4-${\beta}$-glucanase by Cellulomonas sp. CS1-1 on microcrystalline cellulose, sigmacell was maximal after 5-day cultivation as 280 units/mL, which was three times higher than the level produced on carboxymethyl cellulose. A carboxymethyl cellulase containing the carbohydrate of 8.2% was purified from the culture filtrate by successive procedures of column chromatographies. Purification factor was calculated as 22-folds with the specific carboxymethyl cellulase activity of 31.9 units/mg. The molecular weight and isoelectric point of the purified enzyme were 54,000 and pI 5.4, respectively. The optimal pH and temperature were 6.0 and $45^{\circ}C$, and the enzyme was stable between pH 6.5 and 7.5 and below $50^{\circ}C$. The estimated Km and Vmax were 10 mg/mL and $6.25{\mu}mol/min$ for carboxymethyl cellulose and 30.3 mg/mL and $2.85{\mu}mol/min$ for sigmacell, respectively. The enzyme was partially inhibited by $Ag^+$, $Zn^{+{+}}$, $Fe^{+{+}}$ and EDTA, while completely inhibited by $Cd^{+{+}}$ and $Hg^{+{+}}$ at 1 mM concentration.

  • Calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) were introduced to remove Sr and Cs in soil, respectively. Four factor and three level Box-Bhenken design was employed to determine the optimal washing condition of Ca- and K-based solutions, and the ranges tested were 0.1 to 1 M of Ca or K, L/S ratio of 5 to 20, washing time of 0.5 to 2 h, and pH of 2 to 7. The optimal washing condition determined was 1 M of Ca or K, L/S ratio of 20, washing time of 1 h, and pH of 2, and Ca-based and K-based solutions showed 68 and 81% removal efficiency for Sr and Cs, respectively in soil. For comparison, widely used conventional washing agents such as 0.075 M EDTA, 0.01 M citric acid, 0.01 M oxalic acid, and 0.05 M phosphoric acid were tested, and they showed 25 to 30% of Sr and Cs removal efficiency. Tessier sequential extraction was employed to identify the changes in chemical forms of Sr and Cs during the washing. In contrast to the conventional washing agents, Ca-based and K-based solutions were able to release relatively strongly bound forms of Sr and Cs such as Fe/Mn-oxide and organic matter bound forms, suggesting the involvement of direct substitution mechanism, probably due to the physicochemical similarities between Sr-Ca and Cs-K.

  • The principal objective of this study was to produce a chitosan nanoparticle (NP) system for improving blood circulation. Chitosan NPs were prepared using fucoidan and $poly-{\gamma}-glutamic$ acid (PGA), denoted as CS/Fu and CS/Fu/PGA NPs, respectively. As the chitosan concentration was increased, the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) of the NPs significantly increased (p<0.05). When the concentration of fucoidan and ${\gamma}-PGA$ was 5-20 and $1-10{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, the size of the CS/Fu and CS/Fu/PGA NPs was approximately 200 and 100 nm, respectively. With an increase in the fucoidan and PGA concentration, the APTT of CS/Fu and CS/Fu/PGA NPs significantly increased (p<0.05). These results suggest that CS/Fu and CS/Fu/PGA NPs could be used as a potent NP system for improving blood circulation.

  • The restriction of the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment legislation mandates the substitution of lead and other hazardous substances in electronics products by July 2006. Due to this legislative pressure, the electronics industry is moving to adoption of lead free solders. In this paper, we investigated a flux to restrict generating electrochemical migration in lead-free solder. The lead-free solders used in this study were Sn-0.7Cu-0.01P and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu. To measure the resistance of electrochemical migration, the dew-cycle test and water drop test were adopted. As the result, now flux having high durable of electrochemical migration was developed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of various kinds of commercial salts, including Hanju salt, Deep sea water salt, $Salicornia$ $herbacea$ salt, Guwoon salt, Bamboo salt and salt replacement for the reduction of Na concentration in $kimchi$. The fermentative characteristics of these salts were determined during the fermentation at $10^{\circ}C$. $kimchi$ using a salt replacement and with $Salicornia$ $herbacea$ salt showed slow changes in their pH values. The use of salt replacement showed the lowest level(0.97%) of the retardation of $kimchi$ fermentation. For the preparation of $kimchi$ that used a low Na, chemical and microbial changes were investigated during the fermentation of process, examining preparations with both table salt and a salt replacement(CS-17). The salinity level of $kimchi$ prepared with table salt(control) and the salt replacement (CS-17) were 2.17~2.5% and 1.72~1.99% during fermentation, respectively. The Na contents of $kimchi$ with CS-17(562.5 mg%) showed a lower level than that with table salt(879.0 mg%). The growth of Leuconostoc sp. was highest ($1.5{\times}10^8$ cfu/g) in $kimchi$ with CS-17 at 6 day-fermentation, but the highest level($2.3{\times}10^7$ cfu/g) in $kimchi$ with table salt was at 7dayfermentation. The cells of $Lactobacillus$ sp. in the $kimchi$ prepared with CS-17 and table salt increased to $3.0{\times}10^8$ cfu/g and $6.0{\times}10^7$ cfu/g at 8day-fermentation, respectively. It was concluded that the use of CS-17 could reduce Na levels in $kimchi$ and mitigate over-maturation.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of demineralized bone matrix (DBM), calcium sulfate (CS), and calcium metaphosphate (CMP) on osteogenesis of unicortical 5-mm-diameter defects in canine femurs. Seventy-two femoral unicortical defects of nine adult beagles (eighteen femurs, four unicortical femoral defects were made in each femur) were made. Three bone graft substitutive materials such as CS, DBM, and CMP and the empty controls were compared each other. The postimplanted specimens were harvested at week 4, 8, and 24 for radiographic, biochemical and histomorphologic evaluation. In radiograph, CS group appeared to be absorbed rapidly and made new cortical bone. Defects of cortical bone was gradually filled with new bone around bone graft materials in DBM group. Bone graft substitutes weren't absorbed rapidly but, remained performing structural roles in cortical bone after 24 weeks in CMP group. Radiographic intensity of control group showed significantly (p < 0.05) lower compared to that of experimental group. Defects treated with either CS, DBM or CMP had more bone formation than the untreated defects (p < 0.05). The results of analysis in the cortical bone region were deduced the conclusions as follows. Three bone graft materials seemed to accelerate the formation of new bone compared with controls for 24 weeks. CMP group having more or less large particle space was more adequate than DBM group, as well as more compact CS group was more pertinent than CMP group as the glues for bones.

  • This study explored whether MXene (Ti3C2Tx) could remove radioactive Cs+ from model nuclear wastewater. Various adsorption tests were performed and the physical aspects of the interaction were investigated. We varied the MXene dosage, Cs+ initial concentration, solution pH, solution temperature and exposure time. MXene adsorption exhibited very fast kinetics, based on the fact that equilibrium was achieved within 1 h. MXene exhibited an outstanding adsorption capacity (148 mg g-1) at adsorbent and adsorbate concentrations of 5 and 2 mg L-1, respectively, at neutral pH condition (i.e., pH 7). We explored Cs+ adsorption by MXene in the presence of four different ions (NaCl, KCl, CaCl2 and MgCl2) and three different organic acids (sodium oleate, oxalic acid, and citric acid). The Cs+ removal rate changed in the presence of these components; adsorption of Cs+ by MXene thus involved ion exchange, supported by both Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We confirmed that MXene was re-usable for at least four cycles. MXene is cost-effective and practical when used to adsorb radionuclides (e.g., Cs+) in nuclear wastewater.

  • Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the zygomaticotemporal suture (ZTS) maturation, analyze the age distribution patterns of ZTS maturation stages, and investigate the relationship between ZTS and cervical vertebral maturation (CVM). Methods: A total of 261 patients who underwent cone-beam computed tomography (112 males, mean age, 13.1 ± 3.3 years; 149 females, mean age, 13.7 ± 3.1 years) were examined to evaluate the ZTS stages. The ZTS stages were defined based on a modified method from previous studies on zygomaticomaxillary sutures. Differences between groups and correlations between indicators were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test, intraclass coefficient of correlation (ICC), one-way analysis of variance and rank sum test. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. The diagnostic value of CVM stages in identifying ZTS maturation stages was evaluated using positive likelihood ratios (LRs). Results: A positive relationship was found between the ZTS and CVM stage (r = 0.747, ICC = 0.621, p < 0.01) and between the ZTS stage and chronological age (r = 0.727, ICC = 0.330, p < 0.01). Positive LRs > 10 were found for several cervical stages (CSs), including CS1 and CS2 for the diagnosis of stage B, CS1 to CS3 for the diagnosis of stages B and C, and CS6 for the diagnosis of stages D and E. Conclusions: The ZTS maturation stage may be more relevant to the CVM stage than to the chronological age. The CVM stages can be good indicators for clinical decisions regarding maxillary protraction, except for CS4 and CS5.

  • Purpose: In this study, we investigated the effects of Cirsium setidens ethanolic extract (CS) on the development of alcoholic fatty liver and associated injury. Methods: Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed either Lieber-DeCarli control (C) or ethanol (35.5% of total calories) liquid diet with 0 (E), 100 mg/kgBW CS (E+LCS), or 500 mg/kgBW CS (E+HCS) for 8 weeks. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities as well as TG and cholesterol concentrations in the serum and liver tissues were measured by colorimetric assays. Liver histopathology was examined by Hematoxylin-eosin staining of the fixed liver tissues. Protein levels of phosphorylated-AMP activated protein kinase (p-AMPK), phosphorylated-acetyl CoA carboxylase (p-ACC), phosphorylated-nuclear factor kappa B (p-$NF{\kappa}B$), and $TNF{\alpha}$ were measured by Western blot analyses. Results: Both doses of CS markedly suppressed alcohol-induced lipid droplets accumulation in the liver tissues and significantly inhibited alcohol-induced increases in activities of serum ALT and serum AST. Similarly, CS significantly reduced hepatic and serum TG concentrations. Compared to groups fed alcohol only, CS supplementation strongly increased hepatic levels of p-AMPK and p-ACC. Further, CS significantly inhibited alcohol-induced phosphorylation of $NF{\kappa}B$, which was associated with reduced hepatic protein levels of $TNF{\alpha}$. Conclusion: Our data demonstrated that CS has a protective effect against alcoholic liver injury, which was associated with activation of AMPK and inhibition of $NF{\kappa}B$.
