  • Objectives: The aims of this study were to conduct a systematic review of the microtensile bond strength (${\mu}TBS$) of multi-mode adhesives to dentin and to perform a meta-analysis to assess the significance of differences in the ${\mu}TBS$ of one of the most commonly used universal adhesives (Scotchbond Universal, 3M ESPE) depending on whether the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode was used. Materials and Methods: An electronic search was performed of MEDLINE/PubMed, ScienceDirect, and EBSCOhost. Laboratory studies that evaluated the ${\mu}TBS$ of multi-mode adhesives to dentin using either the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode were selected. A meta-analysis was conducted of the reviewed studies to quantify the differences in the ${\mu}TBS$ of Scotchbond Universal adhesive. Results: Only 10 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria for the systematic review. Extensive variation was found in the restorative materials, testing methodologies, and failure mode in the reviewed articles. Furthermore, variation was also observed in the dimensions of the microtensile testing beams. The meta-analysis showed no statistically significant difference between the etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes for Scotchbond Universal adhesive (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Multi-mode 'universal' adhesives can achieve substantial bonding to dentin, regardless of the used modes (either etch-and-rinse or self-etch).

  • InP quantum dot (QD)-organosilicon nanocomposites were synthesized and their photoluminescence quenching was mainly investigated because of their applicability to white LEDs (light emitting diodes). The as-synthesized InP QDs are capped with myristic acid (MA), which are incompatible with typical silicone encapsulants. We have introduced a new ligand, 3-aminopropyldimethylsilane (APDMS), which enables embedding the QDs into vinyl-functionalized silicones through direct chemical bonding. The exchange of ligand from MA to APDMS does not significantly affect the UV absorbance of the InP QDs, but quenches the PL to about 10% of its original value with the relative increase in surface related emission intensities, which is explained by stronger coordination of the APDMS ligands to the surface indium atoms. InP QD-organosilicon nanocomposites were synthesized by connecting the QDs using a short cross-linker such as 1,4-divinyltetramethylsilylethane (DVMSE) by the hydrosilylation reaction. The formation and changes in the optical properties of the InP QD-organosilicon nanocomposite were monitored by ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorbance and steady state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. As the hydrosilylation reaction proceeds, the QD-organosilicon nanocomposite is formed and grows in size, causing an increase in the UV-vis absorbance due to the scattering effect. At the same time, the PL spectrum is red-shifted and, very interestingly, the PL is quenched gradually. Three PL quenching mechanisms are regarded as strong candidates for the PL quenching of the QD nanocomposites, namely the scattering effect, F$\ddot{o}$rster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and cross-linker tension preventing the QD's surface relaxation.

  • This study was conducted using a descriptive correlational survey design to identify how patients with chronic low-back pain perceived family function and to examine the relationship between family function and depression. The participants of the study were 116 patients with chronic low-back pain patient who were having follow-up treatment in a local pain clinic, located in Daegu. A structured questionnaire was filled out participants themselves and the structured interview was given during January and February, 2000. The data collection instrument were FACE II-Korean version and Beck's Depression Inventory(1983). The data collected were analysed using mean, standard deviation(SD), t-test, F-test, Duncan test and Pearson correlation coefficient, done with SAS. The results are as follows; 1. The mean of the respondents' perceived family function was 3.47, with emotional bonding at 3.61, acceptability and sharing at 3.61, participation at 3.23, negotiation and satisfaction at 3.24 and responsibility and expectation at 3.76. 2. The mean of the respondents' perceived depression was $17.53{\pm}8.76$. 3. There was significantly negative correlation between family function and depression(r=-0.4817, p=.0001). 4. Research variables included demographic characteristics and showed that subjects who were aged 65 years or older showed significantly lower scores in patient's perceived family function than those who were aged 45 years or below(p=.0502). Perceived family function of females respondents were significantly lower than males(p=.0026). The illiterate showed significantly lower scores than other groups(p=.0001). Respondents with spouse and extended family tended to show significantly higher scores than those who were living with spouse only or by themselves alone(p=.0091). Those who had higher income showed significantly higher scores than in the lower income group(p=.0001). 5. For family function regarding pain characteristics, those who reported severe pain-related daily activity impediments showed significantly lower scores in family function than others with less pain(p=.0357).

  • The effect of polymeric diphenyl methane-4,4-diisocyanate (pMDI) or 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in the UMF resin was discussed for improvement of the dry and wet shear strengths of plywood manufactured from high moisture content veneers. The curing behavior of UMF resin by pMDI or HDI content was examined by DSC and TGA, and its adhesion performance was evaluated by dry and wet shear strength tests of plywood. With the increase of pMDI content in the UMF resin, the curing temperature, reaction enthalpy (${\Delta}H$), and thermal stability consistently increased. With the increase of HDI content in the UMF resin, however, the curing temperature and reaction enthalpy (${\Delta}H$) decreased consistently and the thermal stability slightly increased in the range of 200 to $400^{\circ}C$ but decreased beyond $400^{\circ}C$. Also, the dry tensile shear strength increased up to the pMDI content of 5% and then decreased with its further addition but the wet tensile shear strength showed slight tendency to increase with the increase of pMDI content in the UMF resin. As the HDI content increased, however, the dry and wet tensile shear strengths of plywood consistently increased.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pomegranate solution (Punica granatum) on eroded dentin through antioxidant action, shear bond strength (SBS) and interface morphology. Materials and Methods: The 10% pomegranate peel extract was prepared by the lyophilization method. Punicalagin polyphenol was confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by capturing the 2,2-diphenyl1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. For the SBS, 48 dentin fragments were divided into sound or eroded, and subdivided according to the pretreatment (n = 12): water or P. granatum. The surfaces were restored with self-etch adhesive and a bulk-fill resin (Ecosite; DMG). The SBS was done immediately (24 hours) and after thermal cycling + water storage (12 months). For scanning electron microscopy, 48 dentin fragments (24 sound and 24 eroded) received the same treatments as for SBS (n = 6), and they were analyzed after 24 hours and 12 months. Results: The P. granatum had antioxidant action similar (p = 0.246) to the phenolic standard antioxidants. After 24 hours, eroded dentin had lower SBS than sound dentin (p < 0.001), regardless of the pretreatment. After 12 months, P. granatum maintained the SBS of sound dentin (13.46 ± 3.42 MPa) and eroded dentin (10.96 ± 1.90 MPa) statistically similar. The lowest values were found on eroded dentin treated with water (5.75 ± 1.65 MPa) (p < 0.001). P. granatum on eroded dentin caused peritubular demineralization and hybrid layer with resin tags. Conclusions: The pomegranate extract had antioxidant action and preserved the adhesive interface of the eroded dentin.

  • This paper describes the formation of porous 3C-SiC by anodization. 3C-SiC thin films were deposited on p-type Si(100) substrates by APCVD using HMDS (Hexamethyildisilane: $Si_2(CH_3)_6$). UV-LED(380 nm) was used as a light source. The surface morphology was observed by SEM and the pore size was increased with increase of current density. Pore diameter of 70 ~ 90 nm was achieved at 7.1 $mA/cm^2$ current density and 90 sec anodization time. FT-IR was conducted for chemical bonding of thin film and porous 3C-SiC. The Si-H bonding was observed in porous 3C-SiC around wavenumber 2100 $cm^{-1}$. PL shows the band gap enegry of thin film (2.5 eV) and porous 3C-SiC (2.7 eV).

  • Cysteine capped silver nanoparticles (Cys-AgNPs) have been synthesized by employing electrochemically active biofilm (EAB), $AgNO_3$ as precursor and sodium acetate as electron donor in aqueous solution at $30^{\circ}C$. Cys-AgNPs of 5-10 nm were synthesized and characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, XRD and TEM. Capping of the silver nanoparticles with cysteine provides stability to nanoparticles by a thiolate bond between the amino acid and the nanoparticle surface and hydrogen bonding among the Cys-AgNPs. In addition, the antibacterial effects of as-synthesized Cys-AgNPs have been tested against two pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli (O157:H7) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAO1). The results demonstrate that the as-synthesized Cys-AgNPs can proficiently inhibit the growth and multiplication of E. coli and P. aeruginosa.

  • In this study, bottom-up type powder processing and top-down type SPD (severe plastic deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve full density of 1 vol.% carbon nanotube (CNT)-metal matrix composites with superior mechanical properties by improved particle bonding and least grain growth, which were considered as a bottle neck of the bottom-up method using the conventional powder metallurgy of compaction and sintering. ECAP (equal channel angular pressing), the most promising method in SPD, was used for the CNT-Cu powder consolidation. The powder ECAP processing with 1, 2, 4 and 8 route C passes was conducted at room temperature. It was found by mechanical testing of the consolidated 1 vol.% CNT-Cu that high mechanical strength could be achieved effectively as a result of the Cu matrix strengthening and improved particle bonding during ECAP. The ECAP processing of powders is a viable method to achieve fully density CNT-Cu nanocomposites.
