During the northern burning season, biomass burning is found north of the equator, while satellite estimates from the residual-type method such as the CCD method show higher ozone south of the equator. This discrepancy is called the tropical Atlantic paradox (Thompson et ai., 2000). We use satellite and ground-based measurements to investigate the paradox. When the background tropospheric ozone over the Pacific Ocean from TOMS measurements is subtracted from the latitudinal total ozone distribution (e.g. TOMS-Pacific method), the results show remarkable agreement with the latitudinal stratospheric ozone distribution using the CCD method. The latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution using the CCD method, with a persistent maximum over the southern tropical Atlantic, is also seen in the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution using the TOMS-Pacific method. It suggests that the complicated CCD method can be replaced by the simple TOMS-Pacific method. However, the tropical Atlantic paradox exists in the results of both the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods during the northern buming season. In order to investigate this paradox, we compare the latitudinal ozone distributions using the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods by using the SAGE measurements (e.g. TOMS-SAGE method) and the SHADOZ ozonesoundings (e.g. TOMS-Sonde method) assuming zonally invariant stratospheric ozone, which is the same assumption as of the CCD method. During the northern burning season, the latitudinal distributions in the tropospheric ozone derived from the TOMS-SAGE and TOMS-Sonde methods show higher tropospheric ozone over the northern tropical Atlantic than the southern Atlantic due to a stronger gradient in stratospheric ozone relative to that from the CCD and TOMS-Pacific methods. This indicates that the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution can be changed depending on the data that is used to determine the latitudinal stratospheric ozone distribution. Therefore, there is a possibility that the north-south gradient in stratospheric ozone over the Atlantic can be a solution of the paradox.
When the background tropospheric ozone column over the Pacific Ocean is subtracted from the latitudinal total ozone distribution, the results show remarkable agreement with the latitudinal stratospheric ozone distribution using the CCD. The latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution using the CCD method, with a persistent maximum over the southern tropical Atlantic, is also seen in the latitudinal tropospheric ozone distribution using the T-P method. It suggests that the CCD method can be replaced by the simple T-P method. However, the tropical Atlantic paradox exists in the results of both the CCD and T-P methods during the northern burning season. In order to investigate this paradox, we compare the latitudinal ozone distributions using the CCD and T-P methods by using the SAGE measurements (e.g. TSA method) and the SHADOZ ozonesoundings (e.g. T-S method) assuming zonally invariant stratospheric ozone, which is the same assumption as of the CCD method. During the northern burning season, the latitudinal distributions in the tropospheric ozone derived from the T-SA and T-S methods show higher tropospheric ozone over the northern tropical Atlantic than the southern Atlantic due to a stronger gradient in stratospheric ozone relative to that from the CCD and T-P methods.
This study compared between tropospheric column ozone by applying the SAM method to TOMS and OMI data for northern summer. Tropospheric ozone from the SAM represents a peak over the tropical Atlantic, where it is related with biomass burning. This feature is also seen in the distribution of the model and CO. Additionally, enhancement of the SAM ozone over the Middle East, and South and North America agrees well with the model and CO distribution. However, the SAM results show more ozone than the model results over the northern hemisphere, especially the ocean (e.g. the North Pacific and the North Atlantic). The tropospheric ozone distribution from OMI data shows more ozone than that from TOMS data. This can be caused by different viewing angle, sampling frequency, and a-priori ozone profiles between OMI and TOMS. The correlation between the SAM tropospheric ozone and CO is better than that between the model and CO in the tropics. However, that correlation is reversed in the midlatitude.

In order to clarify the vertical ozone distribution in planetary boundary layer of coastal area with complex terrain, an observation campaign was carried out around Gwangyang Bay with dense pollutant emission sources during two days from June, 4 2007. For this observation are Radiosonde, SODAR(SOnic Detection And Ranging) and Tethered ozone sonde were employed. The surface meteorological and photochemical observation data provided by AWS (Automatic Weather System) and AQMS (Air Quality Monitoring System) were also applied for analysis. Synoptic condition is strongly associated with lower level ozone distribution in complex terrain coastal area. Since mesoscale circulation induced by difference of characteristics of land and sea and orographic forcing is predominant under calm synoptic condition, vertical distribution of ozone is complicate and vertical ozone concentration greatly fluctuated. However in second day when synoptic influence become strong, ozone concentration in lower levels is vertically uniform regardless of observation level. This results in vertical observation indicates that vertical ozone distribution is often determined by synoptic condition and also affects surface ozone concentration.
This paper applies the Scan-Angle Method (SAM) to the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) aboard Earth Probe (EP) satellite for determining tropospheric ozone based on TOMS scan geometry. In the northern tropical Africa burning season, the distribution of the SAM-derived tropospheric ozone presents a tropospheric ozone enhancement related to biomass burning. This distribution is consistent with that of fire counts observed from Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) and that of carbon monoxide, the tropospheric ozone precursor, observed from Measurements of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITI). However, this feature is not shown in the distribution of tropospheric ozone derived from other TOMS-based algorithms for the northern burning season. In the high latitudes, the influence of pollution in the SAM results is seen over the northern continents in agreement with carbon monoxide for northern summer when the dynamical activity is weak in the northern hemisphere.

Based on air quality monitoring data('89~'97) operated by the Department of Environment, we provide various fundamental statistics for ground ozone. The purpose of this paper are to review the national ambient ozone standard, to study spatial distribution of ozone. Since we, in Korea, calculate average ozone level, to examine the occurrences of ozone level 3 times a day (1~8, 9~16, 17~24 hours), the method does not seem to be scientifically sound comparing to a running average method adapted by the USEPA. When we counted the number of cases with 8-h average O3 level exceeding 60ppb(8-h average standard in Korea)and 80 ppb (that in the U.S.A) and also when we calculated 8-hour average ozone level based on th US method, some regions were classified as non-attainment areas. Especially in Seoul, results of spatial distribution analysis showed that high level ozone over 80 ppb was observed at Kuui-Dong and Pangi-Dong in the eastern part and at Ssangmun-Dong in the northeastern part. Also, occurrences of ozone episode defined as number of days then ozone level exceeding 80 ppb for 3 consecutive hours were extensively reviewed in this paper.
This study has been performed to clarify the characteristics of temporal and spatial distribution of surface ozone concentration over Jeju Island, one of the cleanest areas in Korea with low emissions of air pollutants. Ozone data are monitored at four sites in Jeju Island. These monitoring sites are located at two urban area(referred to Ido and Donghong), coastal area(Gosan site) and forest site(Chuna site). Ozone data has been routinely collected at these sites for the late four years. The patterns of seasonal cycle of ozone concentrations at all stations show the bimodal with the peaks on spring and autumn and a significant summer minimum. However, the patterns of diurnal variations at rural station, i.e., Gosan and Chuna sites are considerably different to those at urban stations such as Ido and Donghong sites. The patterns of $\DeltaO_3$ variations are very similar with those of monthly mean ozone concentrations and $\DeltaO_3$ values are exceeded 30 ppb, at urban stations. This may be that urban stations are more influenced by local photochemical reactions rather than rural stations. In order to assess the potential roles of meteorological parameters on ozone formation, the meteorological parameters, such as radiation, temperature, and wind are monitored together with ozone concentrations at all stations. The relationships of meteorological parameters to the corresponding ozone concentration are found to be insignificant in Jeju Island. However, at Gosan and Donghong stations, when the sea breeze blew toward the station, the ozone concentration is considerably increased.

The late sea-breeze and its impacts on ozone distributions were investigated during April to September from 1998 to 2002, in the Busan metropolitan area (including surrounding areas) using the surface ozone concentrations (obtained at 9 monitoring sites), local meteorological variables (obtained near the shore), together with synoptic data. The urban scale ozone concentration was also simulated using the MM5/UAM-V to better understand the role of late sea-breeze in Busan. The results from observation study showed that most of the late sea-breeze occurred when weak offshore synoptic flow (northwesterly) suppressed development of sea - breeze, and the ozone concentration level and frequencies exceeding ozone standard increased with the onset time of sea breeze. We also found that the late sea-breeze clearly induces relatively weak wind speed and high temperature during the daytime As a result it enhances the photochemical ozone accumulation and delays the occurrence time of the averaged maximum ozone concentrations. The results of simulation for high ozone episode (24 August, 2001) by MM5/UAM -V revealed that the late sea-breeze interacted with weak offshore synoptic wind can contribute significantly to high ozone concentration in the coastal urban area. The simulated horizontal and vertical distribution of ozone concentration indicated that ozone can be accumulated over the sea under stagnant condition and return to the land in the late afternoon with the sea breeze, suggesting both the relationship between late sea-breeze and recirculation and the importance of late sea -breeze effects influencing severe ozone pollution in Busan.
This research has been examined to measure the degree of the fiber damage of ozonenation high yield pulp in the beating process. Ozone treated the TMP(Thermomechanical Pulp) and CTMP(Chemithermomechanical Pulp) of spruce and the CTMP of birch has been beaten to be reached 200ml(freeness) of its content. It had been studied the forming of fiber distribution by treatment for long fiber, short fiber, fine with the above method. As ozone treatment time gets longer, the pulp has showed the tendency of increasing the fiber content of 28, 48mesh. Ozone treated fiber has been increased long fiber content by being added softness. By given longer ozone treatment time, the TMP and CTMP of spruce has showed the decreasing of fiber content. On the contrary, CTMP of birch has showed the increasing its fiber content. It had proved that the results of difference are rather closer to the species of tree than closer to the kinds of pulp. The fiber content of over 200mesh which has created in beating process demonstrates the decreasing of its fiber content by getting longer ozone treatment time. The softness of fiber can be extracted by the lignin of fiber surface that had been formed by ozone treatment. Thus we assume that the fiber in the process of beating obtains less physical damage.
Gwangyang Bay is often severely confronted by photochemical pollutants due to its location and dense emissions. It is located in a basin on the south coast of the Korean peninsula and is crossed by a remarkable cluster of hills and mountains of a small horizontal scale that forms a channel. Clearly, the air flow field has a great influence on the dispersion of air pollutants. The characteristics of the wind flow patterns have an important effect on the dispersion of pollutants emitted. In these situations, the distribution of the ozone concentration is extremely complicated because of the superposition of circulations of the air flow fields, especially in complex coastal region. In this study, we examined the distribution of the high level ozone on Gwangyang Bay particularly during the episode day (for 5 years). Among these days, A high level ozone was induced by the development of a sea/land breeze local circulation system, as well as by an anabatic/catabatic flow from the mountains and valley with weakening of the synoptic wind. High level ozone distribution pattern(6 types) on Gwangyang bay is analyzed and the comparison of each pattern reveals substantial localized differences in intensity and distribution of ozone concentration from the site coherence and UPA analysis of ozone concentration. The observed VOC concentration had much difference in concentrations and daily variations between Jungdong and Samil.
