Afterglow Effect from Adding BaF2 to Oxyfluoride Glass Ceramic Containing Eu2+-doped Nepheline

  • An oxyfluoride glass ceramic containing Eu2+-doped nepheline and LaF3 crystals was modified, with BaF2 replacing LaF3 up to 20 mole percent, and its luminescence change was monitored. With increasing BaF2 content, the greenish yellow emission centered at 540 nm under 400-nm excitation decreased, and a new afterglow emission from the modified ceramic was observed after removal of the excitation light source. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) were used to investigate the changes in the crystalline phases within the glass matrix. Time dependent emission intensity was monitored to observe the afterglow, and the possible mechanism for the afterglow due to BaF2 addition was considered.

무용기 용융법을 활용한 형광소재용 결정화 유리 개발 (Development of novel oxyfluoride glasses and glass ceramics for photoluminescence material by a containerless processing)

  • 본 연구에서는 containerless processing 법을 활용하여 새로운 형광 소재용 Eu2O3-BaF2-La2O3-B2O3 계 유리 및 결정화 유리를 개발하였다. 또한 조성 및 결정화 정도에 따른 유리의 열적, 광학적, 구조적 특성 변화를 분석하였다. 유리 조성에 따른 열적 특성은 DTA 분석을 통해 이루어졌으며, BaF22 함량의 증가에 따라 유리전이온도 및 유리화능이 급격히 감소하는 것을 확인하였다. 유리의 결정화 특성은 XRD 분석을 통해 확인되었으며, BaF2 결정상의 결정화 정도에 따라 발광 효율이 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 유리구조 내에서 fluorine 이온의 결합특성을 분석하기 위해 La 3d5/2 XPS 및 F 1s XPS 스펙트럼을 분석하였다. fluorine 이온은 유리내에서 network modifier 역할을 하는 Ba2+ 및 La3+ 이온과 주로 결합하는 것을 확인할 수 있었고, 결정화 과정에서 La-F 결합이 감소하고 Ba-F 결합이 증가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Infrared-to-Visible Up-conversion in Er-Pr-Yb Triply Doped Oxyfluoride Glass Ceramics

  • We synthesized $Er^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$, $Pr^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$, and $Er^{3+}-Pr^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$ -doped oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing $CaF_2$ nanocrystals by proper thermal treatments. Spectral characteristics of down- and up-converted emissions in three kinds of glass ceramics under 365-nm and 980-nm excitations were compared and explained by cross relaxations, excited-state absorptions, and energy-transfer processes between different ions. The huge reduction of up-conversion emission in the triply doped glass ceramics under 980-nm excitation compared to the $Er^{3+}-Yb^{3+}$ codoped one was explained by the split pump power and the direct energy transfer from $Er^{3+}$ to $Pr^{3+}$ ions. Increasing $Yb^{3+}$ concentration from 2% to 10% in the triply doped glass ceramics showed more than quadratic enhancement of the absorbed power, and we explained it by the enhanced energy-transfer efficiency from $Yb^{3+}$ to $Er^{3+}$ ions. We also observed enhanced up-converted emissions of $Er^{3+}$ and $Pr^{3+}$ ions in three kinds of glass ceramics under simultaneous excitation at 980 nm and 1550 nm, and suggested detailed up-conversion mechanisms.

Fluorine and Heavy Metal Oxide Effects on Spectral Properties of Tm3+ in Silicate Glasses

  • The fluorine doping along with heavy metal oxides remarkably raised the $^3$H$_4$ lifetime and the quantum efficiency in Tm$^{3+}$-doped silicate glasses. 29 mol% of fluorine substitution for oxygen in 70SiO$_2$-15Pbo-12ZnO-3KO$_{1}$2/ glass raised $^3$H$_4$ lifetime to 193 $mutextrm{s}$. Refractive indices were raised by heavy metal oxide substitution, but hardly changed by fluorine substitution. The fluorine doping changed the local structure around Tm$^{3+}$ions, then low energy vibrations related to fluorine are considered to largely reduce the multi-phonon relaxation rates in the oxyfluoride silicate glasses. The $^3$H$_4$ lifetimes and absorption and emission spectra of Tm$^{3+}$doped silicate and oxyfluoride silicate glasses are reported, and Judd-Ofelt calculation results are discussed in this paper.

  • The IR spectra of he heavy metal fluoride glasses showed peaks at $1, 400cm^{-1}$ or $1, 100cm^{-1}$ due to metal oxyfluoride impurities. The intensity of this band and hence the oxide impurity content of the glass could be reduced considerably by the use of reactive atmosphere melting under $CCl_4$ In comparison with the fundamental IR absorption band of heavy metal oxides the oxide impurity bands observed in the heavy metal fluoride glasses are multiphonon bands due to a 2-phonon absorption process. The envelope of the a vs. v curve beyond thue fundamental region shows the exponential fall off of a with increasing v-typical of intrinsic multiphonon absorption. In the multiphonon region the amount of structure is intermediate between that observed for covalent solids and that for ionic solids.
