The rate of apparent nitric oxide (NO) release, as measured in the exhaust gas of green alga, Scenedesmus obliquus, depended on the light intensity and pH. It doubled after lowering the temperature from $25^{\circ}C{\;}to{\;}15^{\circ}C$ and strongly decreased from $35^{\circ}C{\;}to{\;}42^{\circ}C$. The Scenedesmus cells, deficient in nitrogen or phosphorus, demonstrated a significant increase in NO production following their transfer to nitrate- and phosphate-rich media. The addition of herbicides (DCMU and glyphosate) or toxic concentrations of $Cu^{2+}{\;}or{\;}Fe^{3+}$ produced strong NO peaks, resembling those that occurred after sudden darkening. An increase in the $Ni^{2+}$ concentration to 20 ppm resulted in a gradual increase of NO release from the initial ~1.5 ppbv to>20 ppbv, whereas $Cd^{2+}$ instantaneously suppressed the NO by the cultures of Scenedesmus was not altered by L-NNA, an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), or by its substrate, L-arginine. This seems to exclude the role of NOS in the NO formation under study. Accordingly, it can be assumed that the rate of NO formation is mainly a function of dynamic nitrite pool sizes and environmental factors significantly affect the NO production in algae.
RecA protein plans a central role in homologous recombination and DNA repair in Escherichia cofi (E. colD. The function 8nd structure of this protein are universal in prokarvotes and also conserved in eukaryotes such as yeast. The RecA-like protein with 74 lInDa in size has already been identified and purified from a fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe (5. pommel (Lee, 19911. From this study it was revealed that the RecA-like protein of 5. pombe was highly inducible to various DNA damaging agents and inhibitors of nucleotide pool svnthesizins enzymes. The cellular level of the 5. pombe RecA-like protein wi,u markedly increased, upto 5- to 10-fold, by treatment with various DNA-damains agents including ultraviolet (UV) light, methyl methanesulfonate WS),4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO), and mitomycin-C (MMC), similar to E. cofi RecA protein. Interestingly, the protein level was also increased by inhibitors of nucleotide pool forming enzlwnes such as methotrexate (MTX) and hvdroxvurea (HU). The most effective doses for the inducibility of 4-NQO, MMS, W, MMC, MTX, and HU were 0.2 Ug/ml, 30 mM, 200 J/ma, 0.4 $\mus/ml,$ 1 Ug/ml, and 100 mM, respectively. The range of effective duration time for the inducibilitv of RecA-like protein was from 270 to 450 mins. These results suggest that the 5. pombe RecA-like protein also platys an imortant role in cellular responses to DNA damage as in E. coli system.
The thermal, mechanical, and neutronic performance of the metal alloy fast reactor fuel design complements the safety advantages of the liquid metal cooling and the pool-type primary system. Together, these features provide large safety margins in both normal operating modes and for a wide range of postulated accidents. In particular, they maximize the measures of safety associated with inherent reactor response to unprotected, doublefault accidents, and to minimize risk to the public and plant investment. High thermal conductivity and high gap conductance play the most significant role in safety advantages of the metallic fuel, resulting in a flatter radial temperature profile within the pin and much lower normal operation and transient temperatures in comparison to oxide fuel. Despite the big difference in melting point, both oxide and metal fuels have a relatively similar margin to melting during postulated accidents. When the metal fuel cladding fails, it typically occurs below the coolant boiling point and the damaged fuel pins remain coolable. Metal fuel is compatible with sodium coolant, eliminating the potential of energetic fuel-coolant reactions and flow blockages. All these, and the low retained heat leading to a longer grace period for operator action, are significant contributing factors to the inherently benign response of metallic fuel to postulated accidents. This paper summarizes the past analytical and experimental results obtained in past sodium-cooled fast reactor safety programs in the United States, and presents an overview of fuel safety performance as observed in laboratory and in-pile tests.

A preliminary and parametric sensitivity study on recriticality risk of fast reactor cores after a hypothetical total core meltdown accident was performed. Only neutronic aspects of the accident were considered, independent of the accident scenario, and efforts were made to estimate the quantity of molten fuel which must be ejected out of the core to assure a sub-critical state after the accident. Two types of parameters were examined : characteristic parameters of molten core such as geometry, molten pool type (homogenized or stratified), fuel temperature, environment, and relative parameters to normal core such as core size(small or large), and fuel type (oxide, nitride, metal). The first type of parameters was found to intervene more directly in the recriticality risk than the second type of parameters.
Core disruptive accidents have been investigated at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) as part of the work to demonstrate the inherent and ultimate safety of conceptual design of the Korea Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor(KALIMER), a 150 MWe pool- type sodium cooled prototype fast reactor that uses U-Pu-Zr metallic fuel. In this study, a simple method and associated computer program, SCHAMBETA, was developed using a modified Bethe-Tait method to simulate the kinetics and thermodynamic behavior of a homogeneous spherical core over the period of the super-prompt critical power excursion induced by the ramp reactivity insertion. Calculations of the energy release during excursions in the sodium-voided core of the KALIMER were subsequently performed using the SCHAMBETA code for various reactivity insertion rates up to 100 S/s, which has been widely considered to be the upper limit of ramp rates due to fuel compaction. Benchmark calculations were made to compare with the results of more detailed analysis for core meltdown energetics of the oxide fuelled fast reactor. A set of parametric studies were also performed to investigate the sensitivity of the results on the various thermodynamics and reactor parameters.
We measured the heat load to a reactor vessel with and without the in-vessel debris bed under an IVR-ERVC condition. Mass transfer methodology was adopted based on heat and mass transfer analogy to achieve high Ra'H of order ~1015 with compact test rigs. We postulated the in-vessel debris bed has a flat top and particulate debris was simulated as an identical diameter spheres. We conducted experiments varying the height of the debris bed and the results showed that Nusselt numbers decreased in both uppermost and curved surfaces with the increasing bed height. Once the debris bed is formed, it acts as an obstacle to the natural convective flow, which reduces the buoyancy. The reduction of driving force results in the impaired heat transfer in both upward and downward heat transfers.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the magnetic resonance (MR) characteristics and applicability of new, uniform, extremely small iron-based nanoparticles (ESIONs) with 3-4-nm iron cores using contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Materials and Methods: Seven types of ESIONs were used in phantom and animal experiments with 1.5T, 3T, and 4.7T scanners. The MR characteristics of the ESIONs were evaluated via phantom experiments. With the ESIONs selected by the phantom experiments, animal experiments were performed on eight rabbits. In the animal experiments, the in vivo kinetics and enhancement effect of the ESIONs were evaluated using half-diluted and non-diluted ESIONs. The between-group differences were assessed using a linear mixed model. A commercially available gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) was used as a control. Results: All ESIONs showed a good T1 shortening effect and were applicable for MRA at 1.5T and 3T. The relaxivity ratio of the ESIONs increased with increasing magnetic field strength. In the animal experiments, the ESIONs showed peak signal intensity on the first-pass images and persistent vascular enhancement until 90 minutes. On the 1-week follow-up images, the ESIONs were nearly washed out from the vascular structures and organs. The peak signal intensity on the first-pass images showed no significant difference between the non-diluted ESIONs with 3-mm iron cores and GBCA (p = 1.000). On the 10-minutes post-contrast images, the non-diluted ESIONs showed a significantly higher signal intensity than did the GBCA (p < 0.001). Conclusion: In the phantom experiments, the ESIONs with 3-4-nm iron oxide cores showed a good T1 shortening effect at 1.5T and 3T. In the animal experiments, the ESIONs with 3-nm iron cores showed comparable enhancement on the first-pass images and superior enhancement effect on the delayed images compared to the commercially available GBCA at 3T.
Molten Core Concrete Interaction (MCCI) is a complex process characterized by concrete ablation and volatile generation; Thermal and solutal convection in a bubble-agitated melt; Physico-chemical evolution of the corium pool with a wide solidification range (of the order of 1000 K). Twelve experiments have been carried out in the VULCANO facility with prototypic corium and sustained heating. The dry oxidic corium tests have contributed to show that silica-rich concrete experience an anisotropic ablation. This unexpected ablation pattern is quite reproducible and can be recalculated, provided an empirical anisotropy factor is assumed. Dry tests with oxide and metal liquid phases have also yielded unexpected results: a larger than expected steel oxidation and unexpected topology of the metallic phase (at the bottom of the cavity and also on the vertical concrete walls). Finally, VULCANO has proved its interest for the study of mitigation solutions such as the COMET bottom flooding core catcher.

The paper describes spectroscopic characteristics of plasma induces in the pulsed YAG laser welding of alloys containing a large amount of volatile elements. The authors have conducted the spectroscopic analyses of laser induced Al-Mg alloys plasma in the air and argon atmosphere. In the air environment, the identified spectra were atomic lines of Al, Mg, Cr, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn, and singly ionized Mg lines, as well as the intense molecular spectra of A10 and Mg0 formed by chemical reactions of evaporated Al and Mg atoms from the pool surface with oxygen in the air. In argon atmosphere, Mg0 and AI0 spectra vanished, but AIH spectrum was detected. The hydrogen source was presumably hydrogen dissolved in the base metals, water absorbed on the surface oxide layer, or $H_2$ and $H_2O$ in the shielding gas. The resonant 1ines of Al and Mg were strongly self-absorbed, in particular, self-absorption of the Mg 1ine was predominant. These results show that the laser induced plasma was made of metal1ic vapor with relatively low temperature and high density.
Recently, application of arc welding to galvanized carbon steel sheet is on the increasing Ould in the fields of automobile and construction industries. In arc welding process, zinc is evaporated in weld pool, even under the appropriate welding condition and produce blowhole and/or pit. Zinc gas cause instability of arc and increase spatter and fume. This research is purposed to minimize the heat-input and the formation of porosities in the welded joint of the galvanized carbon steel sheet using variable polarity AC wave pulse MIG welding system. An appropriate welding condition which showed low spatter and good bead appearance was acquired by applying the AC pulse MIG welding machine to DC duplicated MIG welding with the solid wire. When oxygen gas was added to shield gas of MIG welding for galvanized steel sheet, arc length was increased and arc stability was improved. In the AC duplicated welding, the loss of galvanized layer was decreased as the amount of heat-input was decreased when the EN ratio was increased under the condition that average welding current was evenly set.
