  • Constituents of timber framed floor affect the insulation performance against impact sound significantly. Among them, installation of massive sound absorbing layer and reinforcement of stiffness of timber floor have been considered as major factors that improve the insulation performance against impact sound. Researches on evaluating the effect of floor constitutions have been carried out through the field measurements for timber framed buildings in Korea. It is concluded that the impact sound pressure level at the relatively lower frequency governs the overall insulation performance, and can be improved by the installation of sound absorbing layer and reinforcement of floor stiffness. Especially, the insulation performance against heavy impact sound was improved significantly when the massive cement mortar layer for floor heating system was installed and the stiffness was reinforced by shortening the joist span using additional beam at the mid-position of original span.

  • In this paper, we proposed the stereo-10.2channel blind upmix algorithm for the enhanced 3D sound. Recently, consumers want to enjoy better sound and the use of a various of multichannel configuration has been steadily improved. Thus, upmix algorithms have been researched. However, conventional upmix algorithms have the problem that distorts the spatial information of original source. To solve this problem and enhance the spatial sound quality, we proposed front and rear channel gain adjustment and 10.2 channel upmix algorithm for each additional channel. The listening test results show that it maintains spatial information of stereo input and enhances 3D sound effects unlike other conventional upmix algorithms.

  • Recently, modern reciprocating air compressors tend to be smaller and lighter. But, as the development of performance, they have many problems for noise and vibration. For this reason, many researches are processing for the reduction of noise and vibration by arranging cylinders with V/W type. Especially, noise and vibration problems of reciprocating air compressor cause a rotating unbalance of crankshaft, so it needs a change of crankshaft parameters appropriately. Hence in this study, we changed crankshaft parameters to solve the rotating unbalance and compared results in order to verify the noise and vibration reduction between new and original air compressor. According to modify a crankshaft parameter, the improvements of noise and vibration were showed results of spectrum measured at selected points of the air compressor crankshaft housing and sound intensity contours measured at a belt left side, table that figure out characteristics of noise. Furthermore, we analyzed objective sound quality metrics with recording data of systems. The results showed that, the new design has improved the level of the first harmonic of vibration displacement, noise and objective sound quality metrics.

  • It is almost impossible to generate the sound field effect in real time with the time-domain linear convolution because of its large multiplication operation requirement. To solve this, three methods are introduced to reduce the number of multiplication operations in this paper. Firstly, the time-domain linear convolution is replaced with the frequency-domain circular convolution. In other words, the linear convolution result can be derived from that of the circular convolution. This technique reduces the number of multiplication operations remarkably, Secondly, a subframe concept is introduced, i.e., one original frame is divided into several subframes. Then the FFT is executed for each subframe and, as a result, the number of multiplication operations can be reduced. Finally, the QFT is used in stead of the FFT. By combining all the above three methods into our final the SFE generation algorithm, the number of computations are reduced sufficiently and the real-time SFE generation becomes possible with a general PC.

  • This study analyzed the factors consisting moving poster design. In order to analyze the elements of moving poster, the researcher reorganized the elements of moving posters by referring to the previous studies on printed posters, motion graphics and works of moving posters. In this study, moving poster components were classified into 'communication', 'visual and form', and 'sound'. In 'communication' section, moving posters had narrative elements, including scenes, because of the time and movement added by the poster's original function. The 'visual and form' section was classified into graphics, layouts, movement, and time. Graphics refered to various graphic objects constituting the screen such as photo, illustration, typography, color, diagram. Layout means screen layout, size, and orientation of the screen. Movement section was divided into 'subject of movement' and 'attributes of movement'. Time was classified physical time such as playing time and subjective time felt by the audience. Also, the researcher categorized 'sound' as an additional section, since most moving posters did not include sound.

  • There is a unique method of musical expression in the nature documentary. The expression method is Mickey Mousing technique, which expresses the movement of animals with music. The Mickey mousing technique can also be used in other types of documentaries, but it is most prominently used in nature documentaries. The Mickey Mousing technique cannot be used in any field other than music composition, because the composer should describe the movement of animals by playing music to match the animal's movements exactly. It is also because they have to play the instrument separately according to the sound source. In this study, we examined the nature documentaries broadcast by KBS over the last five years and analyzed the cases of Mickey Mousing technique. Therefore, we obtained research results that the Mickey Mousing technique is necessary and that the music composition is also necessary as a background music of nature documentaries.

  • Machine fault diagnosis recovers all the studies that aim to detect automatically faults or damages on machines. Generally, it is very difficult to diagnose a machine fault by conventional methods based on mathematical models because of the complexity of the real world systems and the obvious existence of nonlinear factors. This study develops an automatic machine fault diagnosis system that uses pattern recognition techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) and artificial neural networks (ANN). The sounds emitted by the operating machine, a drill in this case, are obtained and analyzed for the different operating conditions. The specific machine conditions considered in this research are the undamaged drill and the defected drill with wear. Principal component analysis is first used to reduce the dimensionality of the original sound data. The first principal components are then used as the inputs of a neural network based classifier to separate normal and defected drill sound data. The results show that the proposed PCA-ANN method can be used for the sounds based automated diagnosis system.

  • Household refrigerator radiates noise of which the pattern is dependent on the operating condition of its parts, such as compressor, flow fans, etc. Thus the refrigerator noise has a variety of frequency characteristics. Therefore, it is required to consider the noise characteristics for evaluating the noise quality and eventually developing the sound quality index of the refrigerator noise. In this study, five units of household refrigerator were selected to measure their noises that were used to generate sound sources for jury test of the study. The measured noises of five refrigerators were divided into ten kinds of sound source by considering operating condition and frequency characteristics. Additionally, the ten sources were each edited to have the same SPL of 30 dBA. Totally twenty kinds of sound sources (10-original SPL, 10-edited SPL 30 dBA) were evaluated by twenty-two subjects, and compared with their sound quality metrics. It was found that only the loudness of the metrics was meaningfully correlated with the subjective evaluation. The rests, sharpness, roughness and fluctuation strength, were not related. The conclusion of this study is that a new sophisticated index is necessary to be developed to qualitatively evaluate the household refrigerator noise.

  • In this paper, we researched a method that makes a good acoustic-speech system using a digital signal processing technique with dynamic microphone as a transducer. Good acoustic-speech system should deliver the original sound input to electric signal without distortion. By measuring the frequency response of the microphone, adjustment factors are obtained by comparing measured data and standard frequency response of microphone for each frequency band. The final sound levels are obtained using the developed adjustment factors of frequency responses from the microphone and speaker to match the original sound levels using the digital signal processing technique. Then, we minimize the changes in the frequency response and level due to the variation of the distance from source to microphone, where the frequency responses were measured according to the distance changes.
