  • Wave field synthesis (WFS) has been gathering more and more attention recently due to its ability to perfectly reproduce an original sound field. However, to realize theoretically perfect WFS, a four-sided loudspeaker array that encloses the listener is required. However, it is difficult to build such a system except in large listening spaces, such as a theater or concert hall. In other words, if the listening space is a home, installing a side loudspeaker array is impractical. If the two side walls located to the left and right of the listener can be omitted, a setup using only front and rear loudspeaker arrays may be a solution. In this letter, we present a subjective listening experiment of sound localization/distance based on a WFS using a front and rear loudspeaker array system which is conducted on two listening points and shows average localization errors of $6.1^{\circ}$ and $9.18^{\circ}$, while the average distance errors are -27% (0.5 m) and -29% (0.6 m), respectively.

  • This paper describes the algorithm for deciding the status of the operating machines in the power plants. It is very important to decide whether the status of the operating machines is good or not in the industry to protect the accidents of machines and improve the operation efficiency of the plants. There are two steps to analyze the status of the running machines. First, we extract the features from the input original data. Second, we classify those features into normal/abnormal condition of the machines using the wavelet transform and the input RMS vector through the K-means algorithm. In this paper we developed the algorithm to detect the fault operation using the K-means method from the sound of the operating machines.

  • In this paper, the characteristic of the regenerative pump is reviewed by the measurement and the analysis. The dominant noise sources are harmonic components of the rotating impeller frequency. The acoustic characteristics and the noise source position at the dump are identified. In order to reduce the high-level peak noise, the interior flow of the pump chamber is analyzed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Acoustic pressure is calculated with Ffowscs Williams and Hawkings equation. As the result of the analysis new design of the pump chamber is recommended. The recommended pump is compared with original pump by evaluating the RMS value of a interior static pressure and the sound pressure level. The new pump chamber recommended by analysis results is proved by a process of the measurement. The overall SPL of a recommended pump is reduced about 3 dBA.

  • The OST (Original Sound Track) in the film plays a vital role in increasing consensus and concentration to the storyline. The selected 4 animations are classified into 17 Narrative Processes (NP) by using NP Classification Model [1]. For the NPs each having OSTs, the authors have investigated 6 kinds of objective musical elements of the OST such as sound (speech, music, effect), tonality, tempo, range, intensity, and instrumentation. It is found that there are 33.3% common musical elements among all of them for the NPs with OSTs commonly. Among them, it is also found that there are 71.9% of common properties of the musical element. This research is meaningful by firstly showing that there are common properties of objective musical elements in each NP and the corresponding OST.

  • For the implementation of 3D Sound Localization system, the binaural filtering by HRTFs is generally employed. But the HRTF filter is of high order and its coefficients for all directions have to be stored, which imposes a rather large memory requirement. To cope with this, research works have centered on obtaining low dimensional HRTF representations without significant loss of information and synthesizing the original HRTF efficiently, by means of feature extraction methods for multivariate dat including PCA. In these researches, conventional linear PCA was applied to the frequency domain HRTF data and using relatively small number of principal components the original HRTFs could be synthesized in approximation. In this paper we applied neural network based nonlinear PCA model (NLPCA) and the nonlinear PLS repression model (NLPLS) for this low dimensional HRTF modeling and analyze the results in comparison with the PCA. The NLPCA that performs projection of data onto the nonlinear surfaces showed the capability of more efficient HRTF feature extraction than linear PCA and the NLPLS regression model that incorporates the direction information in feature extraction yielded more stable results in synthesizing general HRTFs not included in the model training.

  • This study is a preliminary experiment to test on the effect of musical harmony on the suppression of the discomfort from tinnitus. The experiment was conducted on 25 adults with normal hearing. They listened to the three types (1. original music, 2. melody only, 3. harmony only) of Brandenburg concerto no. 3, G Major (J S Bach) and rated tinnitus annoyance scales. The results show that the tinnitus annoyance was significantly reduced when they listened to the tinnitus sound and any of the three types of the same musics compared to when listening to the tinnitus sound only (p < 0.019). Suppression of tinnitus was observed to be greater in the original music containing harmony and the harmony part only than in the music excluding the harmony part (the melody part only) (p < 0.012). The suppression effect was slightly better in the original music including the harmony part than in the harmony part only, but there was no statistical significance (p = 0.189). The experimental results suggest that the harmony in music plays an important role in suppressing tinnitus annoyance, compared to the melody. Validations with tinnitus patients are necessary to underpin the findings, which can enable us to embark further studies for making use of them for clinical applications.

  • Sound localization can be controlled by simulating the transfer functions from sound source to listener's ears. Even by using this method. a good performance cannot be expected when a listener slightly moves from the position where the transfer functions were measured. We have already been proposed the multi-point control method to overcome the problem of the listener's small movement. In this method, the transfer functions are simulated at multiple points around the listner's ears so that the points forms an area which covers the small movement of the listener. In this paper. we investigated the effect of applying multi-point control method for the control of sound localization. Results show that multi-point control is effective to keep the perceptual error of the localized direction small when the listener moves up to 6 cm from the original position.

  • This study is to present a draft for the formulation of uniform title for sound recordings of the Korean traditional music. The draft as the results of this study is summarized as follows: In a musical work of a type of non-composition, the popular name is put into square brackets as a uniform title of court music and folk music in the old Korean traditional music, and the composer's original title is put into square brackets as a uniform title of the new Korean traditional music, but the medium of performance and others are omitted except an identifying element. However, for the formulation of uniform title of a type of composition in an instrumental music, the descriptive form consisted of the order of 'name of one type of composition, medium of performance, serial number, opus number, key, and a descriptive word or phrase' is put into square brackets as a uniform title and the identifying elements. And in the vocal music of the old Korean traditional music, the following medium of performance is used: in vocal choruses, a type of voices; in solo voices, a type of solo voice by sex, but one of the new Korean traditional music follows the descriptive form of the western classical music.

  • Pyeon-gyeong, similar to Chinese Bianqing, is a Korean traditional lithophone with multiple stone chimes. Due to the temperature- and humidity-insensitive characteristics of its material, pumice stone, the instrument provides highly stable pitch and therefore has played a key role in Korean traditional court music. By reason of having absolute pitch, it is an important part of the research on the standard pitch and scale system of korean traditional music, but as an instrument, the study on the sound characteristics and worth is not making satisfactory progress, to date. This research is an analysis paper for physical modeling synthesis of pyeongyeong. Through this study, we will determine the original characteristics of the timbre of pyeongyeong as a unique korean traditional percussion, and investigate these characteristics objectively, based on the music acoustics by scientific analysis. Furthermore, this study will be used as an important basic material for physical modeling synthesis of pyeongyeong, and also make a huge contribution to the cultural applicability by the vitalization of graft onto the various artistic creation field, through the comprehension of the timbre of pyeongyeong as an instrument.

  • Cheju Island is the most attractive resort area in Korea for its exotic landscape, natural beauty, and traditional culture which is quite different from that of the mainland. Until now, most of the recreational facilities and accomodations have been constructed along the coastal areas. Recently, mid-mountain area has been under very heavy development pressure because it is suitable for new sites for tourism facilities and the land price in the coastal area is very high. The mid-mountain area is the land located 200-600m above the sea level. It is a major source of water supply for the island and has exotic scenic beauty, which cannot be found in mainland but it is the area very vulnerable to water pollution Therefore, it is very important to manage this area based on the concept of environmentally sound and sustainable development in order to meet ever increasing demand for the land development The purposes of this project are: 1) to establish Geographic Information System for the whole island, 2)to formulate environmentally sound landuse plat However, There has been accuracy of the original map, defining criteria of analysis, updating of the data were identified for future tasks to be studied.
