  • The term hybridity has recently emerged as one of the most popularized leitmotivs in contemporary diasporic and transnational problematics on migrants' nomadic experiences. Especially, in postcolonial politics, hybridity is argued to provide a critical 'third space' on which to challenge discursive boundaries and redescribe power-embedded history However, this paper suggests that the hybrid subject position can be easily articulated in producing new cultural discourse and empowering hegemonic subjects in certain spates. Based on distinguishing the intentional, conscious hybridity from the organic, lived hybridity, this research Intends to investigate the Janus-faced, double-edged nature of the postcolonial politics of hybridity in the case of Los Angeles Koreatown. First, I discuss how a place of organic hybridity in Koreatown can lead to challenging invented and depoliticized ethnicity. At the second half of this paper, 1 focus on understanding the ways in which new Korean American professionals and elites employ the discourse of '1.5 generation' as an intentional hybridity for empowering their own political position at a local scale. I conclusively suggest that hybridity should be a deconstructive strategy to unlearn dominant socio-spatial boundaries rather than bring about the third space as a reterritorialized political position.

  • Moisture is one of the important design factors that affects to the changes of physical properties and air permeability in the composting matrix. This study examines the effects of moisture during the wetting and drying procedure on physical properties like bulk density, particle size, free air space and air permeability in the sawdust used as the bulking agent in composting process. During both procedures of wetting and drying of the water, with increasing moisture content, bulk density and particle size increased, but FAS decreased. In the range of near 40 to 60% moisture content on a wet basis, particle size and FAS in wetting procedure were larger and higher than those in drying procedure. During wetting procedure, pressure drop continuously decreased ranging from near 20 to 60% moisture content, despite of decreasing FAS as a consequence of increasing moisture, and then over the range of 60% moisture content, pressure drop rapidly increased to the saturated moisture condition while the pore space was filled with the water. On the other hand, during drying procedure, pressure drop decreased from the saturated condition to 40% moisture content. In the recommended range of 50 to 60% moisture content for composting operation, pressure drop in wetting procedure were lower than in drying procedure. For the enhancement of the air permeability in the composting matrix, the wetting procedure was proper than the drying procedure, and the optimum moisture content for the efficient composting operation was appeared to be near 60%.

  • Today, the growing number of international architects enters the open market of South Korean architecture and interior from exhibition spaces such as art galleries to buildings of major companies. Establishing new local landmarks, their works have a considerable influence on the development of architecture. Among many, French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte has worked consistently in South Korea. The purpose of this study is to analyze and put together the expression characteristic of the interior design in his exhibition spaces including Gana Art Gallery. Jean-Michel Wilmotte has designed based on the history, culture, society, and arts in France and other European countries, and is influenced by architects like Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Josef Hoffmann, and Carlo Scarpa. Such an influence is shown in the form of contrast between verticality and horizontality as well as the fortification in his modern classical characteristic, which is one of his expression characters. In his work of improving the ancient architecture, Wilmotte is good at creating a modern space through contextual expression, and the textural contrast between materials of the past and the present. Thus I performed an analysis of the expression characteristic of the interior design in National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado in Lisbon, Cognac Hennessy Museum in France, Gana Art Gallery in Korea, Mus$\acute{e}$e du Pr$\acute{e}$sident Jacques Chirac in Sarran, France, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing, and lastly Mus$\acute{e}$e d'Orsay in Paris. The results show that he maintains the spatial context by applying contemporary design to the preserved existing structure, continues the flow of exhibition through the lightings in the corridors and on the ceiling, and seeks for a balance by adding vertical or horizontal elements to the elevation. In the interior, the staircase and exhibition structure are turned into objects, and the contrasting texture of the wall vitalizes the space. Wilmotte redesigns the space of the past and the present by using indirect joint that allows an organic connection of the old and new structures, and by minimizing the conflict between the two elements through prefabrication. The expression character of his interior design will be potential resources for architects and interior designers to develop their own design languages.

  • The blur phenomenon obscuring the boundary between the field of designers and that of users may be the key paradigm in the 21st century. However, we observed a number of chair design cases that could be considered as the results of blur pheonomenon in the furniture design field from mid 1960s. The backgrounds include the repulsion against the uniform functionalism, deliberation on the life in the future and the development of plastic materials and their processing methods. Under such backgrounds, the designers pursued the new and futuristic furniture design. In that process, what is about the "freedom" that the consumers as well as the designers should have in using the furniture was the important concept. This concept enabled the creation of chair design inducing the participation of consumers. They created various kinds of shapes, functions and structures that the consumers became interested in as if they had fun with toy blocks by mainly using the new material "plastic". In a formative aspect, the entire shape is classified into the organic shape and geometric shape. The unit types are divided into two kinds; type that the unit of simple shape is repeated only with size difference and irregular combination type of the units comprised of more than two shapes. In the functional aspect, some cases showed the transformation and expansion of the function more variously. Other cases changed the function of chairs to tables, cabinets, or objects. In the structural aspect, on the basis of the method assembling each unit, one method is to assemble using the hardware and the other is to assemble only with intrinsic units of chair. The chair design created by the blur phenomenon between the designers and the users as described above causes the blur phenomenon between the furniture and the space where the furniture is installed. Accordingly, it is expanding the furniture design sphere including the case that the furniture is not selected as the rifle article depending on the characteristics of interior space but it becomes the element leading the characteristics of space. This study aims to estimate the change of interior space and the furniture that my cause the blur phenomenon by examining the cases above appropriate for the paradigm of the 21st century. Furthermore, this study will enable the discussion oil the directions of future furniture design based on its results.

  • We demonstrated an inspection system for detecting discoloration of PCB Cu ball pad with an OSP surface finish. Though the OSP surface finish has many advantages such as eco-friendly and low cost, however, it often shows a discoloration phenomenon due to a heating process. In this study, the discoloration was analyzed with device-independent CIELAB color space. First of all, the PCB samples were inspected with standard lamps and CCD camera. The measured data was processed with Labview program for detecting discoloration of Cu ball pad. From the original PCB sample image, the localized Cu ball pad image was selected to reduce the image size by the binarization and edge detection processes and it was also converted to device-independent CIELAB color space using $3{\times}3$ conversion matrix. Both acquisition time and false acceptance rate were significantly reduced with this proposed inspection system. In addition, $L^*$ and $b^*$ values of CIELAB color space were suitable for inspection of discoloration of Cu ball pad.

  • Conventional satellites are generally large satellites that are multi-functional and have high performance. However, small satellites have been gradually drawing attention since the recent development of lightweight and integrated electric, electronic, and optical technologies. As the size and weight of a satellite decrease, the barrier to satellite development is becoming lower due to the cost of manufacture and cheaper launch. However, solar panels are essential for the power supply of satellites but have limitations in miniaturization and weight reduction because they require a large surface area to be efficiently exposed to sunlight. Space solar cells must be manufactured in consideration of various space environments such as spacecraft and environments with solar thermal temperatures. It is necessary to study structural materials for lightweight and high-efficiency solar cells by applying an unfolding mechanism that optimizes the surface-to-volume ratio. Currently, most products are developed and operated as solar cell panels for space applications with a triple-junction structure of InGaP/GaAs/Ge materials for high efficiency. Furthermore, multi-layered junctions have been studied for ultra-high-efficiency solar cells. Flexible thin-film solar cells and organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells are advantageous for material weight reduction and are attracting attention as next-generation solar cells for small satellites.

  • Wastewater containing strong organic matter is very difficult to treat by utilizing general sewage treatment plant. but the wastewater is adequate to generate biomass energy (bio-gas; methane gas) by utilizing anaerobic digestion. EcoDays Plug Flow Reactor (E-PFR), which was already proved as an excellent aerobic wastewater treatment reactor, was adapted for anaerobic food wastewater digestion. This research was performed to improve the efficiency of bio-gas production and to optimize anaerobic wastewater treatment system. Food wastewater from N food waste treatment plant was applied for the pilot scale experiments. The results indicated that the efficiency of anaerobic wastewater treatment and the volume of bio-gas were increased by applying E-PFR to anaerobic digestion. The structural characteristics of E-PFR can cause the high efficiency of anaerobic treatment processes. The unique structure of E-PFR is a diaphragm dividing vertical hydraulic multi-stages and the inversely protruded fluid transfer tubes on each diaphragm. The unique structure of E-PFR can make gas hold-up space at the top part of each stage in the reactor. Also, E-PFR can contain relatively high MLSS concentration in lower stage by vertical up-flow of wastewater. This hydraulic flow can cause high buffering capacity against shock load from the wastewater in the reactor, resulting in stable pH (7.0~8.0), relatively higher wastewater treatment efficiency, and larger volume of bio-gas generation. In addition, relatively longer solid retention time (SRT) in the reactor can increase organic matter degradation and bio-gas production efficiency. These characteristics in the reactor can be regarded as "ideal" anaerobic wastewater treatment conditions. Anaerobic wastewater treatment plant design factor can be assessed for having 70 % of methane gas content, and better bio-gas yielding and stable treatment efficiency based on the results of this research. For example, inner circulation with generated bio-gas in the reactor and better mixing conditions by improving fluid transfer tube structure can be used for achieving better bio-gas yielding efficiency. This research results can be used for acquiring better improved regenerated energy system.

  • BACKGROUND: Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX), which are volatile aromatic hydrocarbons and main constituents of gasoline, are neuro-carcinogenic organic pollutants in soil and groundwater. Korea Ministry of Environment has established the maximum permissible level of BTEX in arable soil to 1, 20, 50 and 15 mg/kg, respectively. METHODS AND RESULTS: To understand an arable soil contamination by BTEX, we collected 92 samples from the arable lands around oil reservoir, and analyzed the BTEX residue using a GC-MS with head-space sampler. A linear correlation between BTEX concentration and peak areas was detected with coefficient correlations in the range of 0.9807-0.9995. The method LOQ of BTEX was 0.002, 0.014, 0.084, and 0.038 mg/kg, respectively. Recoveries of 0.5 mg/kg BTEX were found to be 73.7-96.9%. The precision was reliable since RSD percentage (0.7-7.5%) was below 30, which was the normal percent value. Also, BTEX in all samples were detected under the LOQ. CONCLUSION: These results showed that the investigated arable soils around airport and oil reservoir in Korea were not contaminated by oils.

  • The Danish furniture designer, Verner Panton's work is comprised of the appreciation and application of the traditional for the application of a wide range of high-tech material accompanied by the bold and primary color used his work, the purpose of this study is to draw the expressive characteristics apparent in his work by analyzing the origin, background and case study of his design. The origin including the background of Verner Panton's design is based on the identity of the Danish Modernism and International design trend, which is revolved around the pop culture and is under the direct influence of Martin Johansen and Poul Henningsen. In order to understand the expressive characteristics found in the Verner Panton's chair design, a case study was conducted from 1955 where his debut piece of work, Cone chair was premiered at the Fredericia furniture Fair up through 1970 where Visiona 2 project was presented at the Koln International furniture fair. As a result, the total of 41 chair designs was analyzed by the following four criteria: form, finishing, functionality, and structure. According to the result of the analysis, the design by Verner Panton was based on the experiment of the organic form, his tendency to the pop culture, the concept of space, mobility, simplicity, and sensible creativity of space. Once criticized for being extemporary and consumptive, nevertheless, the outcome of Verner Panton's chairs not only introduced the fresh new and positive ideas that have been mass-producing for over 40 yews but also they keep on getting upgraded in accordance with the development of material.
