  • The contents of inorganic and functional components in the organic Cheongyang pepper, tomato, and strawberry were compared with those of the conventional produce. The analyzed functional components were total phenol, total flavonoid, vitamin C, vitamin E, ${\beta}-carotene$, and capsaicin in Cheongyang peppers; lycopene in tomatoes; and anthocyanin in strawberries. The analyzed inorganic components were total N, Zn, Fe, Ca, Mg, Na, K, and P. The total phenol contents of Cheongyang peppers and tomatoes were 14% and 30% higher, respectively, in the organic vegetables than the conventional ones, whereas strawberries had 13% higher components than the conventional ones. The total flavonoid contents of the Cheongyang peppers and tomatoes were 11% and 29% higher, respectively, than in the conventional produce, but those of the strawberries were 100% higher than in conventional strawberries. Vitamins were mostly higher in organic cultivation products, but there was no significant difference. The ${\beta}-carotene$ content was 22% higher in organic tomatoes, but conventional strawberries and peppers had more ${\beta}-carotene$ than the organic types did. The contents of capsaicin and lycopene were no different between the various cultivations, while anthocyanin was higher in the conventional cultivation. Analysis of inorganic components did not differ between cultivation methods for peppers and tomatoes, and the total N, K, and P contents were higher by 20-28% in the conventional cultivation. The contents of K, Ca, Mg, and P were 16-29% higher in the conventional cultivation of strawberries. Depending on the crops, there were many syntheses of functional components in the organic cultivation. This was thought to be due to nutrients and environmental stress.

  • Our research work aimed to evaluate cover crop effects of winter rye on soil characteristics, soil conservation, and yield productivities on potato fields with 15% slope during a fallowed period. There were two controls of bared field without any cultivation and conventional potato cultivation without winter rye. Potato cultivation increased soil pH, organic matter, available phosphate, and exchangeable cation regardless of cover crop cultivation. Sub-soil, particularly, all components of soil chemical properties showed higher value in winter rye cultivation than conventional cultivation. Higher soil density was observed on cover crop cultivation than conventional cultivation resulting from root residues of the cover crop both topsoil and subsoil. Cover crop residues positively affected plant growth and reduced the amount of soil erosion by holding the soil. Although severe soil erosion was seen in conventional cultivation, winter rye cultivation declined soil erosion by 47% during the fallow period on potato slope fields. Distinct soil bacterial communities were detected among treatments and some OTU(Operational Taxonomic Unit)s showed significantly higher abundance in winter rye treatment. Total yield and commercial rate demonstrated no significant differences while higher tuber phosphate, K+, and Mg2+ contents were observed in winter rye cultivation.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of rye as green manure crop on the improvement of soil environment and reduction of Phytophthora blight in red pepper of open field where Phytophthora blight occurred frequently. Soil physical properties such as bulk density and porosity were increased in rye cultivation. In addition, gaseous was increased but liquid was decreased compared with conventional cultivation. The analysis of phospholipid fatty acids extracted from soil showed that rye cultivation significantly increased relative abundance of microbial community and ratio of aerobic to anaerobic bacteria. Furthermore, ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids and cyclo-fatty acids to precursor. the indicators of increasing in environmental stresses, were reduced in rye cultivated field. Occurrence of Phytophthora blight in rye cultivation was reduced 30.7% compared with conventional cultivation. These results suggest that rye cultivation in red pepper of open field where Phytophthora blight occurred can improve soil environment and reduce damage of Phytophthora blight.

  • Cultivation of peach by organic farming and cooperative form of work was attempted. The compost was made from egg shells and bread residues(bakery residues), falling leaves, and weeds. The cooperative teams of work were farmers, students and members of citizens' movement. The responses of participants for composting, though it's laboriousness and dirtiness, were favorable with feeling of doing good for social services. 20 chickens were raised in the peach orchard as one of the mixed farming. The pH and Ca content of ripened compost were 7.7 and 1.57 %, respectively. Controlling Aphids(plant louse)by ladybug was observed vividly. The size and sugar concentration were comparable to standard values even though rainy season and the number of damaged fruits were less than half(40%).

  • Twelve bacterial strains capable of growing on phenol minimal medium were isolated from iron foundry activated sludge by enrichment culture, and amount them, one isolate which was the best in cell growth and phenol degradation was selected and identified as Acinetobacter junii POH. The optimal temperature, initial pH and phenol concentration in the above medium were 3$0^{\circ}C$, 7.5 and 1000 ppm, respectively. Cell growth of Acinetobacter junii POH dramatically increased 20 hrs cultivation-time and reached a almost stationary phsae 40 hrs cultivation-time then phenol was degraded about 98%. Cell growth was inhibited y phenol at concentrations over 1500 ppm. The isolate was resistant to several antibiotics as well as various heavy metal ions. The growth-limiting log P value of Acinetobacter junii POH on organic solvents was 2.9 in the LB medium. Therefore, it is suggested that Acinetobacter junii POH could be effectively used for the biological treatment of wastewater containing the presence of heavy metal ions and organic solvents.

  • The study was conducted to evaluate effects of weed managements after false seedbed on the weed control and growth of spring and fall cabbages (Brassica oleracea L.) in an organic upland in 2013. Weed managements included rake, flame, PE mulch, and none treatment. The weed occurrence was not effectively controlled by rake treatment but controlled by flame treatment in spring and fall cultivation. PE mulch plots had 30% of tip-burn in spring cultivation. Weed managements after false seedbed were similar fresh weight, leaf number, and cabbage yield to the conventional PE mulch. Head of cabbage was the lowest on the none treatment. Fall cultivation reduced the weed density and increased yield of cabbage compared to those of spring in all treatment plots. In conclusion, rake or flame treatment after false seedbed markedly decreased weed occurrence, which was expected to use for management of environmentally-friendly vegetation as a substitute of PE mulch.

  • Salt accumulation is frequently experienced in soils under protected cultivation. Since protected cultivation does not have rainfall and resulting infiltration, salt accumulation in the soils is inevitable. In this study, analyzed were chemical charecteristics of soils under protected cultivation to investigate the factors which may contribute the salt accumulation. Soil samples were collected from 99 protected cultivation facilities around An-sung Gun, Gyungki-Do and analyzed for electrical conductivity, pH, organic matter con-tents. The results showed that there was no significant trend of changes in electrical conductivity and pH along cultivation years. the only factor influencing salt accumulation was irrigation type. Soils in facilities using drip irrigation showed higher electrical conductivity than those using diversion-hose type irrigation.
