Organic matter plays important roles in soil ecosystem in terms of carbon and nitrogen cycles. Due to recent concerns on climate change, carbon sequestration in agricultural land has become one of the most interesting and debating issues. It is necessary to understand behavior of soil carbon for evaluating decomposition or sequestration of organic matter and analyzing potential carbon decomposition pattern about the kinds of organic matter sources to cope with well. In order to evaluate decomposition of soil carbon according to organic material during cultivating rice in paddy field, we treated organic material such as hairy vetch, rice straw, oil cake fertilizer, and manure compost at $50{\times}50{\times}20cm$ blocks made of wood board, and analyzed carbon contents of fulvic acid and humic acid fraction, and total carbon periodically in 2013 and 2014. Soil sampling was conducted on monthly basis. Four Kinds of organic matter were mixed with soil in treatment plots on 2 weeks before transplanting of rice. The treatment of animal compost showed the highest changes of total carbon, which showed $7.9gkg^{-1}$ in May 2013 to $11.6gkg^{-1}$ in October 2014. Fulvic acid fraction which is considered to easily decompose ranged from 1 to $2gkg^{-1}$. Humic acid fraction was changed between 1 to $3gkg^{-1}$ in all treatments until organic material had been applied in 2014. From May to August in the second year, the contents of humic acid fraction increased to about $4gkg^{-1}$. The average of humic fraction carbon at treatments of animal compost was recorded highest among treatments during two years, $2.1gkg^{-1}$. The treatment of animal compost has showed the lowest ratio of fulvic acid fraction, humic acid fraction compared with other treatments. The average ratio of fulvic fraction carbon in soil ranged from 16 to 20%, and humic fraction carbon ranged from 19 to 22%. In conclusion, animal compost including wood as bulking agent is superior in sequestrating carbon at agricultural land to other kinds of raw plant residue.
Changes of organic carbon after the entrance into dam reservoirs were investigated using water samples collected in May, September, and October in 2010 from the inflow sites and the outlets of four selected dam reservoirs-Soyang, Chungju, Chungju regulation, and Uiam. Increase of refractory dissolved organic carbon (R-DOC) was observed only for large dam reservoirs with long residence times whereas the trend was not found for relatively small reservoirs. The effects of residence times on organic carbon changes were further confirmed by significant positive correlations between monthly residence times and the relative increase of either dissolved organic carbon (DOC) or R-DOC concentrations. Comparison of spectroscopic characteristics of DOC revealed that the changes in the large reservoirs in May might result from in-lake processes. The inflow of terrestrial sources of DOM during storms appears to largely affect the DOC quality of the large reservoirs for the rest of the sampling periods. The mechanism, however, did not fully explain the behaviors of DOC for the small sized reservoirs. Our combined results suggested that both residence time and the input of allochthonous carbon sources might substantially influence the quantity of DOC as well as its quality in dam reservoirs.

Models estimating carbon budget at land surface are mainly interested in vertical flux of carbon. On the other hand, studies on horizontal flux are obviously lacked to confirm that relationship between the hydrological flux of organic carbon discharged from catchment and terrestrial carbon production, a relation between Total Organic Carbon(TOC) and Gross Primary Production(GPP) tried analysis through cross correlation. The best correlation structure is correlation between GPP and TOC of flow-weighted mean concentration from watershed without delay. Furthermore, cross correlation analysis was performed by consider periodicity. The correlation between TOC and GPP in summer was similar to correlation without periodicity. Therefore, correlation between GPP and TOC was most regulated by the correlation between GPP and TOC at summer. As a result, the vegetation carbon and organic carbon from watershed is recognized a close relationship on the seasonal. Therefore, future research is correlation analyzing between vegetation variables according season, GPP and TOC, we are expected to use quantitative understanding that horizontal flux flow of carbon from the surface.
This study reports on the influence of N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate ($PYR_{14}BF_4$) ionic liquid additive on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent based electrolytes against a carbon electrode. We used the mixture of ethylene carbonate/dimethoxyethane (1:1) as an organic solvent electrolyte and tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TEABF_4$) as a common salt. Using the $PYR_{14}BF$ ionic liquid as additive produced higher ionic conductivity in the electrolyte and lower interface resistance between carbon and electrolyte, resulting in improved capacitance. The chemical and electrochemical stability of the electrolyte was measured by ionic conductivity meter and linear sweep voltammetry. The electrochemical analysis between electrolyte and carbon electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
The distribution of organic carbon and its decomposition rate were studied in the middle and down stream reaches of the Kum River system, Korea. Water samples were collected from May to June in 2006 at seven mainstream sites and three tributary sites from the river mouth to the Daechung Reservoir outlet. The change of DOC and POC were measured during incubation for the determination of decomposition rate. The reduction of organic carbon during 20 days' incubation was regarded as labile or biodegradable organic carbon (LDOC, LPOC), and the remaining organic carbon was regarded as recalcitrant organic carbon. The mean TOC was $5.17({\pm}1.49)mgC{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in the mainstream sites and $7.09({\pm}1.48)mgC{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in tributary sites, respectively. TOC comprised of 62% DOC and 38% POC. LPOC was approximately 68% of POC, while LDOC was only 24% of DOC. Mean decomposition rate of TOC was about $0.03day^{-1}$. Mean decomposition rates of LPOC ranged from $0.10day^{-1}$, and that of LDOC was approximately $0.08day^{-1}$. The decomposition rate of both LPOC and LDOC did not show significant difference between mainstream and tributary sites. The result of this study can give a guide to the selection of parameters in the calibration processes of water quality models.
The Primary production and budget of organic carbon at rainy and dry period was surveyed to evaluate the contribution of primary production in Paldang Reservoir. Primary productivity of phytoplankton showed remarkable differences depending on sampling dates and sites, ranged from 110 to 2,701 mgC $m^{-2}day^{-1}$. In the rainy period of April and August when there had been frequent rainfall resulting short hydraulic retention time and low algal biomass in Paldang Reservoir, autochthonous organic carbon occupied very low ratio, farming approximately 7 percent of total inflow of organic carbon. However in June when it almost never rained and dominant algal species changed from diatoms to green algae and small flagellates, autochthonous organic carbon from primary productivity of phytoplankton formed 29 percent of total inflow of organic carbon.
Carbon nanomaterials in organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells have attracted a great deal of interest for the development of high-efficiency, flexible, and low-cost solar cells. Due to the complicated structure of OPV devices, the electrical properties and dispersion behavior of the carbon nanomaterials should be controlled carefully in order for them to be used as materials in OPV devices. In this paper, a fundamental theory of the electrical properties and dispersion behavior of carbon nanomaterials is reviewed. Based on this review, a state-of-the-art OPV device composed of carbon nanomaterials, along with issues related to such devices, are discussed.
The various pretreatment processes were evaluated to remove organic pollutants of weathered oil contaminated seawater(WOCS) for reverse osmosis desalination process, Biodegradation, coagulation, ultrafiltration, advanced oxidation processes and granular activated carbon filtration were used to evaluate the potential of organic pollutants removal in WOCS. Dissolved Organic Carbon(DOC) was almost not removed by biodegradation in WOCS. DOC was removed by 25% and 10% with the addition of $FeCl_3$ and PAC in WOCS, respectively. The removal efficiency using ultrafiltration(WOCS 500) was about 20% of DOC and 40% of $E_{260}$, respectively. In AOP application of WOCS, the removal of organic materials was improved up to 60% by the combination of $UV/O_3$ compared to UV process. However, 98% of DOC in woes could be removed by granular activated carbon filtration. It is revealed that activated carbon filtration is the best process for the pretratment of DOC removal.
Kinetic experiments on the biological oxidation of $Fe^{2+}$ by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans were conducted by measuring the total organic carbon content. The total organic carbon in the solution was determined with different initial concentrations of $Fe^{2+}$(4, 9, 15, and 20 mg/ml). The growth of At. ferrooxidans and substrate utilization were described by the Monod expression. The total organic carbon was found to be an indicator of the biomass concentration and thus may be effectively utilized for estimating cell growth rates in kinetic model development.
Background: Organic carbon stored in coastal wetlands, which comprises the major part of oceanic "blue carbon," is a subject of growing interest and concern. In this study, organic carbon storage in coastal wetlands and its economic value were estimated using the raw data of 25 studies related to soil carbon storage. Data were collected from three tidal flats (one protected and two developed areas) and two estuarine salt marshes (one protected and one restored area). Bulk density, soil organic matter content, and standing biomass of vegetation were all considered, with Monte Carlo simulation applied to estimate the uncertainty. Results: Mean carbon storage in two salt marshes ranged between 14.6 and $25.5kg\;C\;m^{-2}$. Mean carbon storage in tidal flats ranged from 18.2 to $28.6kg\;C\;m^{-2}$, with variability possibly related to soil texture. The economic value of stored carbon was estimated by comparison with the price of carbon in the emission trading market. The value of US $ $6600\;ha^{-1}$ is ~ 45% of previously estimated ecosystem services from fishery production and water purification functions in coastal areas. Conclusions: Although our study sites do not cover all types of large marine ecosystem, this study highlights the substantial contribution of coastal wetlands as carbon sinks and the importance of conserving these habitats to maximize their ecosystem services.
