  • The effect of aging on the optoelectronic properties of a single ZnO nanowire is investigated in this study. The photoluminescence (PL), photocurrent spectrum, current-voltage characteristics, and photoresponse were measured for the as-grown ZnO nanowire and for the same nanowire exposed to air for three months. For the aged nanowire, the broad PL band is weaker, the intensity of the photocurrent is strengthened, and the photoresponse is slower, compared with the as-grown nanowire. It Is suggested in this paper that the observed aging effect on the PL is due to the reduction in the number of oxygen vacancies within the nanowire and that the aging effect on the photocurrent and photoresponse originates from the formation of oxygen vacancies near the surface.

  • Abstract In this study characteristics of Al-doped ZnO thin film by HIPIMS (High power impulse sputtering) are discussed. Deposition speed of HIPIMS with conventional balanced magnetic field is measured at about 3 nm/min, which is 30% of that of conventional RF sputtering process with the same working pressure. To generate additional magnetic flux and increase sputtering speed, electromagnetic coil is mounted at the back side of target. Under unbalanced magnetic flux from electromagnet with 1.5A coil current, deposition speed of AZO thin film is increased from 3 nm/min to 4.4 nm/min. This new value originates from the decline of particles near target surface due to the local magnetic flux going toward substrate from electromagnet. AZO film sputtered by HIPIMS process shows very smooth and dense film surface for which surface roughness is measured from 0.4 nm to 1 nm. There are no voids or defects in morphology of AZO films with varying of magnetic field. When coil current is increased from 0A to 1A, transmittance of AZO thin film decreases from 80% to 77%. Specific resistance is measured at about $2.9{\times}10-2\Omega{\cdot}cm$. AZO film shows C-axis oriented structure and its grain size is calculated at about 5.3 nm, which is lower than grain size in conventional sputtering.

  • Optoelectronic arc discharge sensor was used to detect arc discharge inside power distribution panel. Arc discharge is fatal to power system once it begins, thus preventive detection is necessary before power failure occurs. Optoelectronic detection method was used to avoid direct electrical contact to power apparatus inside power distribution panel. 180 degree detection angle and detection range far exceeding 6m, which was sufficient for monitoring purpose, was achieved using the photodiode having $7.5mm^2$ of active surface area and flash source with $0.4cal/cm^2$ energy density, which is equivalent to 1.9J with $2.16cm^2$ emitting area. The response speed of arc discharge sensor was measured to be below 1 msec. The above optoelectronic arc discharge sensor was measured to be sensitive enough to detect 0.94 pC charge.

  • Currently, the flexible organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) are investigated. They are very vulnerable to moisture, and thus have been found to show some problems. Thus, an effective barrier layer is needed to protect from moisture in air. We deposited thin films with magnesium oxide (MgO) and silicon oxide $(SiO_{2})$ compounds mixed at various mixture ratios on flexible polyether sulfone (PES) substrates by an electron-beam evaporator to investigate their applizability for transparent barrier applications. In this study, we found that as the MgO fraction increased, thin films comprised of MgO and $(SiO_{2})$ compounds became more amorphous and their surface morphologies become smoother and denser. In addition, zirconium oxide $(ZrO_{2})$ was added to the above-mentioned compound mixtures. $ZrO_{2}$ made thin mixture films more amorphous and made the surface morphology denser and more uniform. The water vapor transmission rates (WVTRs) of the whole films decreased rapidly. The best WVTR was obtained by depositing thin films of Mg-Si-Zr-O compound among the whole thin films. As the thin mixture films became more amorphous, and the surface morphology become denser and more uniform, the WVTRs decreased. Therefore, the thin mixture films became more suitable for flexible OLED applications as transparent passivation layers against moisture in air.

  • Optoelectronic shooting training systems are used in shooting training sites to improve the accuracy of shooting by tracking the trajectories of gun movements. However, optoelectronic-based systems have limitations in terms of cost, complexity of installation, and the risk that electronic targets may be broken. In this study, we developed and verified a shooting training system that measures postural tremors using a low-cost accelerometer. The acceleration sensor module was designed to be attached to the air cylinder of a gun. Postural tremors were evaluated based on amplitude, frequency, and spatial pattern index, which were computed using acceleration data. The postural tremor indices between the accelerometer and optoelectronic-based system were highly correlated (left-right and up-down directions: r = 0.76 and r = 0.70, respectively). We validated the developed shooting training system using an independent two-sample t-test, which identified a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the calculated postural tremor index according to the athlete's shooting score (i.e., best and worst shots).

  • A piezoelectric ceramic fiber composite (PCFC) was successfully fabricated using $0.69Pb(Zr_{0.47}Ti_{0.53})O_3-0.31[Pb(Zn_{0.4}Ni_{0.6})_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}]O_3$ (PZT-PZNN) for use in small-scale wind energy harvesters. The PCFC was formed using an epoxy matrix material and an array of Ag/Pd-coated PZT-PZNN piezo-ceramic fibers sandwiched by Cu interdigitated electrode patterned polyethylene terephthalate film. The energy harvesting performance was evaluated in a custom-made wind tunnel while varying the wind speed and resistive load with two types of flutter wind energy harvesters. One had a five-PCFC array vertically clamped with a supporting acrylic rod while the other used the same structure but with a five-PCFC cantilever array. Stainless steel (thickness: $50{\mu}m$) was attached onto one side of the PCFC to form the PZT-PZNN cantilever. The output power, in general, increased with an increase in the wind speed from 2 m/s to 10 m/s for both energy harvesters. The highest output power of $15.1{\mu}W$ at $14k{\Omega}$ was obtained at a wind speed of 10 m/s for the flutter wind energy harvester with the PZT-PZNN cantilever array. The results presented here reveal the strong potential for wind energy harvester applications to supply sustainable power to various IoT micro-devices.

  • The EAST ICRF system operating space has been extended in power and phase control with a low-level RF system for the new double-strap antenna. Then the multi-step power and periodic phase scanning experiment were conducted in L-mode plasma, respectively. In the power scanning experiment, the stored energy, radiation power, plasma impedance and the antenna's temperature all have positive responses during the short ramp-ups of PL;ICRF. The core ion temperature increased from 1 keV to 1.5 keV and the core heating area expanded from |Z| ≤ 5 cm to |Z| ≤ 10 cm during the injection of ICRF waves. In the phasing scanning experiment, in addition to the same conclusions as the previous relatively phasing scanning experiment, the superposition effect of the fluctuation of stored energy, radiation power and neutron yield caused by phasing change with dual antenna, resulting in the amplitude and phase shift, was also observed. The active control of RF output facilitates the precise control of plasma profiles and greatly benefits future experimental exploration.

  • We investigated the growth of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) structures which emit blue light. The samples were grown in a low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition system. We examined InGaN/GaN MQWs by varying growth temperatures and thicknesses of InGaN well and GaN barrier layers in MQWs. Especially, the thickness of GaN barrier in InGaN/GaN MQWs was found to severely affect the interfacial abruptness between InGaN well and GaN barrier layers. The higher order satellite peaks in the high resolution x-ray diffraction spectra and the high resolution cross sectional transmission electron microscope image of MQW structrues revealed that the interface between InGaN and GaN layers was very abrupt. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectra also showed a blue emission from InGaN/GaN MQWs at the wavelength of 463.5nm with a narrow full width at half maximum of 72.6meV.

  • A neural prostheses can be designed to permit stimulation of specific sites in the nervous system to restore their functions, lost due to disease or trauma. This study focuses on the feasibility of optoelecronic stimulation into nervous system. Optoelectronic stimulation supplies, power and signal into the implanted optical detector inside the body by optics. It can be effective strategy especially on the retinal prosthesis, because it enables the non-invasive connection between the external source and internal detector through natural optical window 'eye'. Therefore, we designed an effective neural stimulating setup by optically based stimulation. Stimulating on the sciatic nerve of a rat with proper depth probe through optical stimulation needs higher ratio of current spreading through the neural surface, because of high impedance of neural interface. To increase the insertion current spreading into the neuron, we used a parallel low resistance compared to load resistance organic interface and calculated the optimized outer parallel resistance for maximum insertion current with the assumption of limited current by photodiode. Optimized outer parallel resistance was at a range of 500Ω-700Ω and a current was at a level between 580uA and 650uA. Stimulating current efficiency from initial photodiode induced current was between 47.5 and 59.7%. Various amplitude and frequency of the optical stimulation on the sciatic nerve showed the reliable visual tremble, and the action potential was also recorded near the stimulating area. These result demonstrate that optoelectronic stimulation with no bias can be applied to the retinal prosthesis and other neuroprosthetic area.

  • Oxide dispersion-strengthened materials W-1wt%Pr2O3 and W-1wt%La2O3 were synthesized by wet chemical method and spark plasma sintering. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis, XRD and Vickers microhardness measurements were conducted to characterize the samples. The irradiations were carried out with a 5 keV helium ion beam to fluences up to 5.0 × 1021 ions/m2 under 600 ℃ using the low-energy ion irradiation system. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study was performed to investigate the microstructural evolution in W-1wt%Pr2O3 and W-1wt%La2O3. At 1.0 × 1020 He+/m2, the average loops size of the W-1wt%Pr2O3 was 4.3 nm, much lower than W-1wt% La2O3 of 8.5 nm. However, helium bubbles were not observed throughout in both doped W materials. The effects of pre-irradiation with 1.0 × 1021 He+/m2 on trapping of injected deuterium in doped W was studied by thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) technique using quadrupole mass spectrometer. Compared with the samples without He+ pre-irradiation, deuterium (D) retention of doped W materials increased after He+ irradiation, whose retention was unsaturated at the damage level of 1.0 × 1022D2+/m2. The present results implied that irradiation effect of He+ ions must be taken into account to evaluate the deuterium retention in fusion material applications.
